Volume 2: Knocking on Heaven's Door Chapter 51: Students appear (Part 1)
"Now are we going to find out why a professor from Princeton is attending our summer camp?" Ottilia asked in a low voice as she handed a cup of coffee to Tommy Hawke, who was bending over his desk writing advertising slogans.
Tommy stopped and took the coffee. "Thank you, Ms. Farrell. Actually, you know what? Although I am very curious and I am sure that the professors from Princeton are not interested in our summer camp or any of us, I am not going to waste my time on such useless speculation. No matter who it is or why, first, I want to use this opportunity to add a glamorous chapter to my resume. Second, I want to make money right now. I can use the title of Princeton University professor to make money from those rich people!"
"Well, the school told me that they would increase their efforts in summer camp, and the principal told me that other teachers could be arranged to participate, and that I could take a normal vacation, and he wanted to talk to you about the donation that would eventually be donated to the school." Otilia Farrell said to Tommy.
She was the guidance teacher of this older boy, but now she didn't seem to be doing any real guidance work. Most of the time, Tommy asked her to help with something.
This made her feel that she might not have enough experience, because although she had participated in many summer camps in high school, she was only a participant and had no experience in building such an organization from scratch. In some ways, her instructor, like Tommy in front of her, Dennis who was collecting supplies, and Pam who was spreading rumors, were all complete newcomers.
Moreover, Ottilia felt that Tommy might need an experienced instructor who could constantly provide him with ideas instead of asking him to make decisions every time. Although she was very interested in this summer camp, she felt that she should still give the choice to Tommy.
"No, you just stay here, Miss Farrell, and tell the principal that if we change our instructor, or if he dares to try to provide his so-called school resources to force us to increase the donation ratio, I will raise my middle finger to the professor from Princeton University on the day he comes, and tell him that this is the welcome ceremony our principal taught me." Tommy immediately objected when he heard Ottilia's words.
Seeing Tommy's objection, Otilia's smile became even sweeter: "Really? I thought you would need help from teachers who have rich experience in coaching community organizations."
"The Bible says, 'The rooms we live in are made of cedar beams and pine rafters, and no one else is allowed to enter.'" Tommy Hawke said, drank the coffee in his hand, handed the coffee cup back to Ottilia, then turned around and continued to work at his desk.
Ottilia took the coffee cup handed to her by Tommy and felt that what this guy had just said was strange. It was a verse from the Song of Songs in the Bible, meaning that he didn't want anyone to set foot in his room.
Tommy was indeed used at this moment to represent the feeling of not wanting other teachers to intervene.
But the problem is the next part of the poem: My love is among women, like a lily among thorns.
These are the words King Solomon said to his lover.
What was this guy implying? Either he was gay and his partner was Dennis or Pam or both of them, or he wasn't and he was the only woman in the group at the moment.
"Are you hinting that you like me, Tommy? This is not something you should consider now. When you get the college admission letter, you can tell me openly. It's not a bad thing to like someone. You can tell her openly, but there must be a more appropriate time." Ottilia hesitated, and finally, out of her professional ethics as a teacher and her irresistible curiosity, she spoke up to remind Tommy.
Tommy turned his head to look at her, then continued to busy himself with the stack of information in front of him. "Of course, Miss Farrell, that day will come. I don't have time to think about favorability right now. I'm thinking about finding a few elite high school students who signed up first, and let them serve as free guidance assistants for you in the name of gaining experience, so that they can share your work."
"Did you find it?" Ottilia breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Tommy's words.
"We found a few." Tommy handed the selected information to Otilia: "First place, Chris Ferguson, a Los Angeles student who lacked enough competition honors and was asked by his father to rush into an Ivy League school."
…
"Chris! The other party is all-in!"
In a reservation casino somewhere in Massachusetts, a young man wearing a cowboy hat sat outside the casino with an expressionless face, constantly arranging the playing cards in front of him according to the information passed on by a young man who ran out of the casino.
Obviously this was a game of Texas Hold'em. Due to his age, the young man was unable to set foot in the casino, but that did not affect his betting on this game with the people in the casino.
Four public cards have been dealt, namely the 4 of Diamonds, the 9 of Hearts, the 9 of Spades, and the 10 of Spades .
"All-In." The young man outside the casino said, and his companions ran in.
Soon, exclamations and shouts broke out inside: "A straight flush kills four nines!" "What the hell!" "Knowing that the opponent has four nines, he dares to go all in! What a courage!"
The young man stood up, pressed down the brim of his cowboy hat with his hand, raised the corners of his mouth, and walked towards the parking lot in the distance.
"Where are you going! Chris?" his companion came out holding chips and shouted.
The young man opened the car door and said, "Attend a boring summer camp so that I can get into the Ivy League as my father wanted."
…
"The second place, David Schaeffer, is a poor guy like me who attends a public high school in Georgia. He believes that college can change his destiny."
…
In Dunwoody, Georgia, a fat white high school student was handing two videotapes and some change to two black youths in front of him.
The black youth opened his schoolbag, which was filled with books.
"This was stolen from the Gwinnett County Library." The black man said as he handed the bag to the fat white boy.
The fat white boy greedily touched the books, flipping through them one by one, and then changed his expression: "I asked you to steal according to the list I gave you! You stole several of the wrong books!"
"David, if I could read, I wouldn't do this kind of business!" The black youth counted the money, turned around and left, walked a few steps, turned back and asked him: "I can get you some more tomorrow."
David zipped up his schoolbag and put it on his back. Behind his glasses, his small eyes looked at the black man with a piercing look: "No, I'm going to attend a summer camp tomorrow. I'll contact you when I come back."
…
"Third place, Zoe Winters, an Italian-American girl from a public high school in North Adams, Massachusetts."
…
"Zoe!" a middle-aged woman shouted to the black-haired girl who was sitting on the lawn in the distance, deep in thought.
The girl turned her head and looked at the woman: "What is it, Mom?"
"Paul called and wants to invite you out to watch a movie. If you agree, he can drive over to pick you up." The woman smiled and said, "My daughter is very popular. She's nice."
"Tell that idiot to masturbate to the poster of a woman." The girl cursed in a low voice with disdain.
“What did you say, Zoe?” the mother asked louder, not really hearing her daughter.
The girl named Zoe responded to her mother with a sweet smile: "Nothing, Mom, I'm just thinking about what I need to prepare for the summer camp. Tell Paul that I don't have time."
…
"Fourth place, Katherine Nunn, an elite girl from a private high school in Manchester, New Hampshire."
…
“Those classmates have killed countless lives! Butterflies, beetles, ants and even birds. They cruelly made them into specimens!” A brown-haired girl sitting in the back seat of a luxury car said loudly with dissatisfaction.
"Yeah." The father who was driving nodded: "It's indeed a bit cruel."
"But they were praised by the school. What about me? I didn't hurt any life, Dad, but Teacher Gianna criticized me harshly and called you." The girl said: "There are serious problems with education in this country."
The father held the steering wheel and smiled bitterly: "Catherine, I don't think Teacher Gianna is too much. On the contrary, I think you scared her."
"Why? I just suggested that instead of harming those lovely lives, we should choose creatures that everyone in this school hates to make specimens. The most hated creature is undoubtedly the principal. This way, we can complete the homework assigned by the school and no longer have to see hated creatures appearing on campus." The girl's tone was full of dissatisfaction: "We all know that Teacher Jaina actually hates the principal, but she hypocritically rejected my proposal and criticized me."
