Chapter 8: Using Your Skull as a Bowl
Seeing their own greatswords and the opportunity to clear their reputation, the men of Mettenheim certainly would not be afraid of fighting!
A group of people sneaked towards the valley.
It looked like this was indeed the pirates' hiding place. When he got closer, Leon saw a cave.
Several pirates were making a fire outside the cave, apparently cooking soup. Smoke rose up and the delicious aroma of wild mushrooms wafted in the air.
Well, the sun is setting, it is indeed time for dinner... Li Ang's abdomen made a rumbling sound in response.
And then, as if contagious, more sounds representing hunger were heard, and the sounds in the stomachs of the Mettenheim men rose and fell.
They looked at the large clay pot hanging above the fire, their eyes glowing green—it seemed that their desire to eat was far greater than their desire to take back their equipment…
Li Ang suddenly understood what Klose said, "As long as there is food to eat"...
The two shirtless muscular men looked indeed quite hungry. They picked up the crude swords in their hands and were about to rush forward to fight, but were then pulled back by Li Ang.
Li Ang asked this group of hungry strong men to hide behind the mound first, and he got off his horse, intending to go forward to find out the situation first - he was planning to launch a sneak attack.
He actually didn't want to do this kind of dangerous work, but it was because his men were unequipped... He had spent so much money to hire these people, and if there were any casualties here, it would all be his own loss!
Although his chain mail was not a high-quality product, it at least had some defensive power. Moreover, the chain mail was blue-gray in color, which was just right as a protective color in the valley.
Therefore, if there is a possibility of a sneak attack, you should definitely not fight head-on.
But this pirate camp was obviously equipped with secret sentries. Just as Li Ang approached, he heard someone above the valley asking, "There seems to be someone there? Who is that?"
The mission was not successful. We were discovered several dozen meters away from the cave entrance ...
I looked towards the place where the sound came from, but didn't see anyone. The sound came from a small forest on the mountainside.
Of course, although it is called a mountain, it is actually just a dirt slope about ten meters high.
Li Ang's hands trembled, but he did not draw his sword. Instead, he pretended to be an inexperienced person: "I... I'm passing by here, can I buy something to eat..."
After saying this, he spread his hands to show that he meant no harm.
Klose was still very smart. He lay down behind and saw that Leon did not draw his sword but was attracting the pirates' attention. Then he took two people and went around from behind the slope.
A pirate holding a light crossbow came out from the bushes on the hillside, looked at Leon, glanced around Leon, and then aimed the crossbow at Leon.
Several pirates in front of the fire also stood up, drew their weapons, and slowly surrounded him.
Li Ang suddenly felt something was wrong, because none of the pirates spoke, and their eyes were alert. And the pirate holding a crossbow on the mountainside had been aiming for several seconds!
These pirates didn't fall for it... Not good!
Li Ang suddenly rolled on the ground and heard the sound of "whoosh" breaking through the air. Looking back, he saw a crossbow arrow deeply stuck where he had just stood.
"Kill them!"
Leon yelled, then drew his sword and rushed towards the nearest pirate.
If a sneak attack fails, then he can only fight head-on. These pirates are much more vigilant than he thought.
One pirate shouted: "I'm going to use your skull as a bowl!"
Several pirates rushed towards Leon.
But then, a group of shirtless strong men came out from behind the slope, rushed up and greeted the pirates, howling.
The crossbowman on the mountainside was reloading his crossbow when Klose jumped out from behind and cut him in two with one sword.
Then Klose rushed down the mountain and went straight to the entrance of the cave, just in time to block a group of ragged guys who had heard the noise and came out to check.
Leon knew that the Mettenheim people came from a place full of mountains, and they must be very strong in mountain warfare. But he found that he still underestimated the fighting power of these Mettenheim men.
He could have just charged head-on...
These Mettenheim people were running fast on the hillside. A dozen shirtless strong men were running around in the mountains, which was dazzling...
Although they were not wearing armor and only five of them had swords, in this mountainous area, the pirates were easily defeated by this group of tough men like a few chickens, and they couldn't even escape.
Li Ang could even sit back and watch the show, the only thing he needed to do was eat some melon seeds.
Not long after, the battle was over. The pirates completely lost their combat effectiveness, but his own men suffered no casualties - except for one unlucky guy whose foot was pierced by a sharp stone, the others were basically unharmed.
Li Ang whistled happily. He now felt an unprecedented sense of security.
As soon as the battle was over, this group of shirtless men began to drink the fragrant mushroom soup in unison, completely ignoring the pirate corpses lying around the fire.
Li Ang pouted in disdain, found a clean helmet, filled it with soup and went into the cave - the way these foodies ate was so ugly that it would easily make him think he was in a pigsty.
There was indeed some food and weapons stored in the cave, many of which were the original equipment of the Mettenheim warriors - some wide infantry armor, two-handed swords, and infantry hammers.
These steel armors have good defensive power, but are very heavy - this is the characteristic of Mettenheim equipment, rough but practical.
However, this practicality is only for the people of Mettenheim.
Because all these steel armors are made very wide, only suitable for the huge bodies of the Mettenheim people.
Perhaps it was for this reason that these armors were not sold immediately - they were too big and would not fit most Pendor people, so it would be difficult to sell them in a short time.
In any case, these dozen shirtless muscular men finally found their familiar equipment, and this team finally looked like an army instead of "businessmen" delivering goods to a lady's house.
But Klose was still not satisfied, and his face looked quite grim as he inspected the spoils.
Leon could probably guess the reason why he was in a bad mood - there were thirty sets of the same armor, but he only had a dozen Mettenheim people under his command.
There were only a dozen or so pirates here, and most of them were already dead - these Mettenheim people were quite ruthless, especially Klose, who had almost no survivors.
Li Ang felt a pang of pain in his heart. If he had known that these bastards were so good at fighting in the mountains, he should have sold his chain mail and exchanged it for a few blunt weapons, such as infantry hammers. This way, fewer pirates would die. After all, the captured prisoners could be sold as slaves for money...
But now, of the only two remaining captives, one was lying in the cave - that pirate must have been injured a long time ago and did not participate in the battle at all.
For Li Ang, this guy is probably useless, because he only has one leg and can't be sold...
The other was a young man with his legs shackled.
He looks quite honest and has a pretty...handsome appearance.
Moreover, he was not handcuffed by Leon and his gang - he was originally in the cave taking care of the injured pirate.
No way, could these pirates be... Leon and Klose looked at this handsome young man, and they glanced at each other with a somewhat unserious look in their eyes, obviously both thinking of something more avant-garde.
