Chapter 8: The Forgotten Summer Elegy 01
After He Xubei left, I dreamed of him every night, dreaming that he was falling.
I woke up with a slight headache this morning, but I didn't have any nightmares last night.
Shanshan was busy making breakfast in the kitchen. When she saw me coming out, she asked me, "An'an, did you sleep well? I'm making porridge. Drinking some porridge will make you feel better if you're drunk."
I nodded, remembering that I seemed to have seen Li Ye yesterday, I asked her again: "I was drunk yesterday, was it Li Ye who sent us back?"
Shanshan stopped what she was doing, turned around and looked at me and replied, "Well, you were drunk, and we ran into trouble when we came back, and he helped us."
"Why is he there?" I asked, glancing at Shanshan.
"An An, don't you think you are being too harsh on Li Ye ?"
"Too much? If it wasn't for him, would He Xubei have died?"
"But what's wrong with liking someone? What's wrong with confessing to someone you like?" Shanshan was a little excited, and the spoon she was using to drink porridge shook, spilling some soup on the table.
I paused while drinking the porridge, and Shanshan looked at me. She thought I would say something, but I said nothing.
"Shanshan, after resting for so many days, it's time for me to go back to school." After breakfast, I told Shanshan that I was going to school.
Walking into the classroom, I felt familiar yet strange. The people were still the same, but one was missing. My classmates all looked at me, and I looked at the only empty seat, feeling sad.
Math mock test. Looking at the test paper, I held the pen without moving. I remembered the time when I forgot to bring my schoolbag and was called by the teacher to do a test. Later, when I couldn’t do it, He Xubei helped me out. When I thanked him, he still didn’t admit that he was helping me. If I don’t know how to do so many questions now, who will help me out?
Half an hour had passed since the exam, and there was nothing on my test paper except my name. Just as I was thinking about the test paper, there was a commotion in the classroom, and Li Ye handed in a blank paper and walked out.
The radio said there were only fifteen minutes .
The quiet air in the classroom made me feel suffocated, so I handed in the test paper hastily and left.
In the corridor, Li Ye was smoking, and there were two cigarette butts on the ground. I saw Song Jingyan standing next to him.
"Li Ye, this isn't your fault. Why did you make yourself like this?" Song Jingyan snatched Li Ye's cigarette. She looked very indignant. "Li Ye, He Xubei fell to his death. Why are you so upset about it?"
"Give me the cigarette! Song Jingyan, stop interfering in my business!" Li Ye stretched out his hand and asked Song Jingyan for a cigarette.
"No! You have nothing to apologize to Yi Ping'an for! What's the point of smoking so many cigarettes? Will she feel bad when she sees it?" Song Jingyan threw the cigarette on the ground and stomped it out.
"Song Jingyan, I've told you my business and you don't have to interfere! Why do you care about me?" Li Ye showed impatience on his face.
"Because I like you, I don't want to see you hurt yourself!"
Song Jingyan turned around and faced Li Ye, wanting to kiss him, but Li Ye pushed her away: "Song Jingyan, are you crazy? I said I don't like you, and I won't like you no matter what you do! Don't bother me anymore!"
Song Jingyan was pushed to the ground by Li Ye, and I saw tears in her eyes.
"Li Ye, what's wrong with me? How am I worse than Yi Ping'an? Why don't you like me?"
Song Jingyan cried and shouted at Li Ye's back: "Li Ye! No matter how much you like Yi Ping'an, she will not like you! She likes He Xubei..."
Li Ye just paused for a moment, without looking back at her, and continued walking forward.
Song Jingyan sat on the ground, hugged her knees and cried bitterly.
