Chapter 4 The Man on the Tombstone 04

Not long after entering the activity center, a group of Leng Zimo's acquaintances came up to greet me, and soon I was squeezed out of the crowd and separated from Leng Zimo.
I stood alone at the back of the auditorium of the activity center. I didn't look for a seat, but just stood there stiffly, looking at the actress on the stage who was busy doing promotions, singing, dancing, and telling jokes to attract the audience, trying to find a trace of Mosquito passing by from her, but to no avail.
The only thing about that girl that matched my memory was her face and her name, which was pronounced and written in the same way. Without that, I could say that person was not a mosquito at all. However, once she was labeled with that, she could only be a mosquito, a mosquito that had undergone a transformation even in the depths of her soul and was completely new and unfamiliar to me.
I think I need to have a good talk with Mosquito. What’s missing between us is an “I’m sorry”.
If she doesn't show up, there's nothing I can do; but if she shows up, how can I pretend I didn't see her?
I went backstage to wait for Wang Meiwen, fiddling with my phone non-stop, feeling a little nervous.
I was very nervous. We met again after several years and I didn't know what to say to Mosquito.
Are you asking her how she has been doing in recent years?
Or should I ask her if she still hates me and Li Wei for abandoning her?
Or, Mosquito, is it my dad and Li Wei's dad who caused your family to be in such a mess?
What are you talking about?
"Hi! Wang Meiwen! Do you still recognize me?" I spoke stiffly, and greeted .
So, that's what I wanted to say.
Mosquito, do you still know mugwort?
My smile gradually disappeared under the girl's indifferent gaze. I was nervous and twisted my fingers, waiting for the answer from the person in front of me.
Although I was afraid of being hurt by the coldness in her eyes hidden under the heavy eyeshadow, I still looked up stubbornly and looked into her eyes, shouting in my heart: "Mosquito, do you still remember me? I am Ai Ye! Do you still remember? Do you remember that innocent time with Ye Zi, Wei Wei, and Mosquito?"
Wang Meiwen stared at me blankly for a while, then reached out to brush away her bangs that were covering her eyes, and smiled brightly but without any emotion: "I'm sorry, classmate, I've been receiving a lot of people recently, and I can't remember who you are. Are you my fan? The one who left me a message online? Or the one who sent me a blessing email? Or the lucky guest drawn?"
I stood there in a daze, unable to say a word, my eyes fixed on Mosquito's hand as it raised and lowered. There were several old scars on that white wrist, which was shocking to see.
The long suppressed heartache surged towards me like a surging tide, tears were already sparkling in my eyes, I wanted to rush over to grab that thin arm, and loudly ask her, why did you do this? Why did you try to commit suicide? Why don't you live a good life?
But why should I blame her?
Because I was her old friend who had been forgotten and had become a stranger? Or because I was the daughter of the murderer who destroyed her family?
I don't deserve it. From the sneer on Wang Meiwen's lips, I knew she was saying that I don't deserve it.
Do you really not recognize me?
no.
You just don't want to remember it anymore?
Only when people are hurt will they take the initiative to forget. If they are happy, will they be willing to forget it?
I squatted on the ground powerlessly, looking with blurred vision at the girl who used to be so cowardly that she could only cry. At this moment, she left my sight coldly like a stubborn butterfly.
The word " I'm sorry was finally said out loud with a crying voice. I could see Mosquito's steps pause for a moment, his thin back trembled a bit, and then quickly straightened up.
"What are you sorry about?" she asked, her back to me, fists clenched.
I'm sorry for leaving you to travel when you were in the most difficult time. I'm sorry that your family was broken up and my father, whom I had mistaken for my father for 18 years, was involved. I'm sorry that I never went to look for you even though I knew you must have had a hard time in the past few years. First, it was because I didn't know where to look, and then after I knew the truth, I didn't dare to look for you because of guilt...
I'm sorry for so many things I don't know which one to say.
Without waiting for my answer, Wang Meiwen left again.
I squatted on the ground, my eyes were sore.
