Volume 9: Follower Chapter 5: Life and Death
The task of investigating the enemy's city defenses was very simple. We only needed to climb the mountain on the east side of the city of Chamela, which was occupied by the Doomsday Empire Legion, and observe from a distance to confirm whether there were any organized enemy troops stationed in the city. This was perhaps the simplest and easiest task I had ever accepted.
In the city of Chamela, the imperial soldiers were training outside the camp. Their flags were fluttering and they were full of murderous intent. The heavily armored "Red Eye Demon City Defense Force" stood tall on the top of the city, vigilantly observing the movements outside the city. Guarding with them were some vampires wearing purple robes and holding muskets - "Blood Clan Long Shooters".
Although the situation in the city was clear at a glance, I was afraid that I might have missed something, so I stared with wide eyes for more than ten minutes, until Foxiao couldn't help but remind me:
"It won't take that long. I've already completed the investigation. I just need to go back and hand in the mission..."
Following his advice, I stood up, dusted myself off, and was about to leave. Before leaving, I took one last look at the city to make sure I hadn't missed anything.
"Hey, what's going on over there?" Unexpectedly, this last glance allowed me to accidentally discover something unusual in the city. "Why is the city so chaotic?"
"Really? There?" Fu Xiao and I, your father, followed the direction of my gaze and looked towards the city curiously.
On the most spacious north and south continents in Chamela City, a large group of people suddenly emerged like an avalanche. They rushed out of the alley with loud shouts and shouts, and from time to time they fired powerful attack magic or bows, crossbows, guns and other things in their hands. The situation seemed to be completely out of control.
Because I was wearing a telescope that could increase my vision, I could see more clearly than Foxiao and the others. After a long look, I realized that in front of the crazy and rude mob, a slender and weak figure was running forward desperately, as if he was running away. Every time he passed by, he would cause a panic among passers-by. But after a moment, the strangers he passed by would quickly come to their senses and shout loudly to join the pursuit.
The fugitive was forced to go in a panic and had no choice but to move forward along the street. Just as he passed an intersection, an icy arrow accurately shot him. The fugitive was immediately frozen into a human ice sculpture. The crowd chasing him rushed forward immediately, and all kinds of weapons in their hands were immediately put to use. In just a moment, the fugitive's chest was pierced by a sharp sword, and he lay on the ground motionless.
After seeing the fugitive killed on the spot, the people who were chasing him seemed not satisfied. Many of them spontaneously stood around the body, as if they were waiting for the fugitive to resurrect on the spot so that they could kill him as soon as possible.
Their wait was soon rewarded. Not long after, the desperado who had been chased and hacked all the way resurrected again on the spot. It seemed that this guy had become accustomed to this trick of escaping immediately after resurrection. As soon as he regained consciousness, he immediately jumped up like a spring and quickly bounced out of the city.
He moved quickly and chose the right time to revive. The people around him were not prepared and almost let him rush out. Unfortunately, he had just run a few steps when he stepped on a trap set by a shadow thief and was bitten on the left leg by a big clamp. So, he quickly fell into the encirclement of the chasing crowd again and was instantly drowned in the vast ocean of the people's war.
This kind of thing happened again and again. In the short distance of a hundred steps from the intersection to the city gate, this unfortunate fugitive died more than twenty times. When he was close to the city gate, he was cut down by a "Red-Eyed Demon City Defense Force" with a single sword, and his head was chopped open in the blink of an eye.
I have never seen death so frequently fall on a person. The miserable situation of this unfortunate fellow cannot be fully described by the word "desolate". In the last few steps to escape from the city gate, he almost took his own life step by step. The attacks of several demon gate guards had a huge killing power, leaving him no chance to resist. All he could do was to take one or two steps forward before the fatal blow hit his head.
After countless attempts to come back from the dead, the unfortunate desperado finally managed to escape from the butcher knife of the city gate guards and struggled to rush to the wilderness outside the city. After that, the pursuers chased him out of the city and killed him four or five times in a row. Until one time, the fugitive finally successfully used the "stealth" technique and disappeared on the spot in full view of the pursuers. Only then did he completely get rid of the cruel suppression of this group of people, and the chasing crowd gradually dispersed.
We watched the show from beginning to end with great pleasure, and then we set off on our way back. On the way down the mountain, the three of us were still thinking about the bloody massacre we had just witnessed:
"That person just died tragically..."
The bearded priest was indeed a devout clergyman. As soon as he opened his mouth, he spoke in a tone of compassion and with deep regret in his voice.
"…It would be nice if I could chop him a couple of times to satisfy myself…" He then added.
"It seems that the professions of the Empire are somewhat different from ours. I seemed to have seen a few people just now, using magic and skills that I have never seen before." In comparison, I am more concerned about these things that may threaten my own safety in the future.
"That's right..." Foxiao didn't think there was anything strange about it, "...The Empire doesn't have the Druid class, but they have one more Necromancer than us, and some classes will be different from ours after they change jobs, just like they can't change jobs to Paladins, they can only change jobs to Fallen Knights..." I have heard of this, "...and their priests can't change jobs to Devouts, but will become Shadow Followers..."
"Oh, so that's how it is..." I nodded to show that I understood.
What always bothers me is that although the level of people involved in space like Foxiao is not much higher than mine, they always know much more than me, and even many novices who are much lower than me know a lot of things that I don't know. I remember they all said that they saw these consultations on some "home page", but I have visited every city and town I have been to, and I almost dug deep into the ground to steal graves, but I have never found the existence of such a magical equipment as the "home page".
"Yes, yes, I've always wanted to change my job to a paladin..." The bearded priest nodded in a serious manner, looking as if he knew all of this, and interrupted at the right moment.
"Holy knight, you are a priest. Only a warrior can be transferred to a paladin!" Foxiao immediately shouted hysterically. I think he must have used up a lot of effort to resist the urge to kill this stupid kid with a knife.
Fortunately, there are people like I'm Your Dad, who are complete rookies who pretend to know everything even though they know nothing. Only then can I regain some sense of balance in my heart.
Well, there are always people who are much dumber than me . How can I describe this feeling with just one word: “refreshing”!
"Oh, so that's how it is..." I am your father and immediately lowered his head in disgrace. He seemed eager to get rid of this embarrassing situation, and asked for something to talk about:
"What's strange is that they would kill each other in their own city. Isn't fighting prohibited in the city? And why did the guards at the city gate also join in the fight?"
Although this unlearned clergyman has a solid and extremely hard, uncivilized elm head, he now raised a question far beyond his IQ. This is also what always puzzles me: How did this killing happen?
"Ahem... Countless predecessors and martyrs have revealed to us this universal truth with their blood and will..." Foxiao cleared his throat and spoke to us in a rare righteous manner:
"…For those things that we cannot explain yet…" He paused, and in our eager and eager eyes, he strengthened his tone and waved his right hand vigorously:
“…It can all be attributed to character issues!”
"Brother, you are simply a great philosopher of the century..." I am your father, so excited that tears are streaming down my face. With a face full of admiration, I eagerly look at Foxiao who just spoke so arrogantly, "...Listening to your words is better than reading ten years of books..."
Oh, the omniscient and almighty Supreme God, when will you give me an adventure partner with a normal mind? I haven't been disgusted to death by these two guys yet, which should probably be attributed to my unwavering faith in the Supreme God.
"Hey, look there..." Although the bearded priest's brazen flattery and his self-praise made me feel sick all over, I still retained a bit of vigilance as an adventurer. When we passed a corner of the mountain road and were about to return to the foot of the mountain, I suddenly noticed something was happening ahead:
A guy wearing only a thong and nothing on was lying behind a rock at the exit of the mountain road with his back to us, looking out furtively.
Usually when people describe a person in tatters, they always say he is "ragged", but I would say that using this word to describe this person who was almost naked and rushed towards us was really too flattering. The few pieces of rags he was wearing made it hard to tell that they had any connection with "clothes". I even suspected that if this person wanted to repair his equipment, the cost would be more expensive than buying a new one.
Hearing the noise behind him, the wretched naked man turned back to look at us in horror, his face full of despair, and it seemed that he was ready to hide and escape at any time.
But a second later, he came towards us with a trembling voice full of tears, and stretched out his arms to express his excitement with a big hug.
"Jeff, Foxiao, it's you..." Foxiao and I were so pale that we drew our swords and pushed him two steps away before he could get close. He could only face the two sharp blades and continued awkwardly, "...I finally saw my relatives!"
Should I introduce this beggar that we keep our distance from? He is a pure-blooded dark elf, slightly taller than me, with short purple hair, a master thief, and a level 47 assassin. His name is written on his head...
Red Wolf!
Below his name, where the guild name was marked, there was a long string of small words just like ours: a group of people who were bored and chattering about random things.
The biggest difference from the last time we saw him is that when we look at his name this time, it has turned into a friendly and harmless emerald green - this should mean that he has completely left his evil homeland and gloriously joined the Continental Alliance.
Now you should understand why we would rather use swords against him than let this international thief with a kleptomaniac get close to us. If we embrace him without any defense, I am afraid that when we separate, we will not even have a pair of underwear left on our bodies.
"Red Wolf, how come you are here?" Foxiao was very surprised by the sudden appearance of his dark elf friend. He looked at the other's miserable appearance from head to toe in amazement and couldn't help but blurt out, "How did you become like this..."
Suddenly, Foxiao's body stiffened, as if he had thought of something. My mind was also like a flash of inspiration, and I figured out a problem that I had not been able to figure out before.
“Could it be…”
“Could it be…”
Foxiao and I shouted in unison:
"...The guy who was being chased just now was you?!"
"It's me, I'm so miserable..." Red Wolf was about to cry, as if he had a lot of grievances and depression in his heart and nowhere to complain. However, after a moment, he came back to his senses with a full heart full of doubts:
"Huh? How did you know that?"
Huh? Why did Foxiao keep looking up at the sky with his neck raised, as if this problem had nothing to do with him? I didn't seem to hear him mention the symptoms of a stiff neck during the journey just now?
Hey, Red Wolf, please don't keep staring at me with those big eyes. Even though you are a man, I would still feel embarrassed - to be more precise, I would feel embarrassed precisely because you are a man...
Well, the sun in the sky is really round...
"Could it be that you have been hiding nearby, watching my body being guarded and doing nothing..." Red Wolf said gritting his teeth.
Standing on the edge of the vast grassland, letting the gentle wind caress my ears, without hearing a single noise from the world, I feel so peaceful, so peaceful, so peaceful...
"He actually gloats over other's misfortune and laughs so lasciviously..."
On such a beautiful day, our hearts are filled with praises for life and gratitude to the gods. We face life with smiles on our faces and open hearts. Isn't this normal, reasonable and logical?
"You two unscrupulous fellows, stop pretending that you didn't hear anything..."
Whether it is the Alliance or the Empire, countless warriors will be buried in this protracted war, and perhaps some families and races will be extinct. However, for this vast and extremely peaceful grassland, for these towering mountains, for these pure white clouds, the cruelty of war is just a short farce for them. Looking at the vast and boundless beauty in front of me, my thoughts suddenly became so lofty, so profound, so wise, and so sharp...
So sharp?
Huh? When did Red Wolf show his dagger?
All the equipment on his body was torn into pieces, but only this dagger was still as clean as new. This was really strange...
Hi, I know you are very excited, but you shouldn't get so close to me. And holding a knife when you are excited can easily hurt people. I am not afraid of getting hurt, I am really afraid that you will hurt yourself. I told you not to be so excited, why did you come over here? If you come over here again, I will...
"Run..." Faced with the naked assassin approaching with a dagger in his hand, Foxiao and I took the same countermeasure at the same time without any prior agreement - run away.
"Red Wolf, don't be like this. Be rational and let's talk nicely. We can explain what happened just now..." Foxiao ran and screamed.
"I am rational, I am very rational, I have never been so rational as I am now..." Red Wolf's persistent voice came from behind, "...After I stab you two disloyal guys in the back, maybe I will become more rational..."
