Volume 5: Taming the Beast Chapter 4: A Love Affair (Part 2)
"Here, for you..." I casually handed a newly made lens to Xiange Yayi's hand, secretly sighing in my heart: this lens is as thick as a tile, and even light can hardly pass through.
Xiange Yayi closed her left eye, took the lens and put it in front of her right eye:
"Eh!" He let out an unprecedented cry.
"What? Is it still thin?" I hadn't noticed anything strange about him yet, and habitually wanted to take the lens back and continue polishing it.
"Wait..." He waved at me gently, stood up slowly, accurately dodged the books, tables and chairs, broken experimental equipment, etc. that were piled on the ground, walked to the open window, and looked at the vast world outside.
A wave of emotion suddenly surged in my heart, and I asked excitedly, "What's wrong?"
Xiange Yayi closed her right eye again, placed the lens in front of her left eye, stretched out her other hand, spread out her five fingers in front of her body, and looked at it repeatedly.
"Jeff..." Looking at his fingers, he called my name softly, his voice trembling with joy, "...I see it clearly, I really see it clearly, we..."
"We succeeded..." He shouted passionately, and excitedly opened his arms and rushed towards me, wanting to give me a fierce and passionate hug...
"Bang!", "Plop!", "Ouch!" Without the help of the lenses, the elf ranger, who was overwhelmed by excitement, didn't see it at all, tripped over the table leg, and immediately fell heavily to the ground with his teeth and claws bared, and fell clumsily into a gourd...
Since I had the first lens as a reference, it was not difficult for me to grind another one. After only three failed attempts, the second identical glass lens was placed in Xiange Yayi's hands.
The unexpected discovery aroused Xiange Yayi's desire to create. In order to make better use of the two lenses, Xiange Yayi tore off a piece of paper from Mr. Edgwell's notebook and started drawing with a goose feather pen. Unfortunately, his creativity and design level showed an inversely proportional growth trend. At first, he seemed to try very hard to draw two standard circles on the paper, but no matter how hard he tried, the two so-called "circles" still looked like two irregular polygons that were difficult to describe with the shapes we know. Then, he connected the two circles with a straight line, and drew two lines on the outside of the circle that were bent into inexplicable shapes.
"Okay, this is it!" After finishing this design that was full of rich associations, Xiange Yayi let out a long sigh of joy, looking quite proud of it. "How about it, it's a good drawing, isn't it?"
"Bras are sold in many grocery stores, and the prices are not very high. Even if you really have to find someone to make one by hand, shouldn't you find an alchemist? I know a few people who studied tailoring. Their skills are very good, and their fees are not very high." I kindly reminded him.
"Who said I want to make bras?" After hearing what I said, the Elf Ranger's face turned blue and purple, and the slight sense of pride he had just shown disappeared in an instant.
"Even a fool can see that these are glasses!" he shouted at me angrily.
Glasses? This new term puzzled me a little, but it didn't stop me from arguing about what was happening in front of me: "Unfortunately, not every fool has such poor eyesight as you." I took the paper and looked at it carefully, and then suddenly I had an idea and found an exciting discovery for people, especially men:
"Hmm? A transparent bra? Bold design, I like it..."
"I'll say it again..." Xiange Yayi snatched back the crude "design" from my hand, and looked like he wanted to strangle me to death with his bowstring, "...This is not a bra, it's glasses. Do you know what glasses are?!"
Xiange Yayi took a lot of effort to make me understand his design ideas. According to his explanation, the strange irregular polygons were the two lenses I ground, and the twisted lines on them were the metal wires used to fix them. He wanted me to use some metal sheets to fix the two lenses together, and then make them into a shape that could be placed on his nose so that he could carry them with him. He called this thing "glasses".
After his explanation, I was immediately filled with indescribable admiration . His idea was so brilliant that it could be considered a wonderful design - of course, if the extremely poor design drawing was not counted.
My alchemy is not enough to create something that does not exist out of thin air through imagination, but if I have a blueprint - even a bad blueprint - it will be different. As long as there is a standard to refer to and imitate, I can try to make it.
I have good imitation and learning abilities, but lack some simple creativity. This may be one of the biggest differences between me and my friends who are involved in the aviation industry.
According to Xiange Yayi's idea, I inlaid several pieces of metal on two glass lenses, fixed them firmly together, and then welded two relatively thick alloy sticks to the edges of the lenses. In this way, the "glasses" that Xiange Yayi mentioned were finally completed.
I don't know if it's because it's too thick, but unlike the "telescope", the "glasses" are not an ornament, but should be considered a helmet. In addition to increasing defense by two points, the "glasses" can't provide any other attribute bonuses. As a protective gear, this thing that took me almost a whole day to make is not even as good as the most tattered rag hat, which can be called a great shame.
However, its significance to Xian Ge Ya Yi is extraordinary. With its effect, our elven ranger friend has gotten rid of the embarrassment of being unable to see, and his bow and arrow will be more useful, which is a radical change that no top-level helmet can bring to him.
I don't know if it's because I made them according to my own design, but the experience gained from successfully making the "glasses" was greater than that gained from making the "telescope". My alchemy level broke through level seven and was approaching level eight. This was an unimaginable rapid progress for me, who had always made slow progress in alchemy.
"Can you...really see clearly?" Wearing two thick lenses, Xian Ge Yayi looked like his eyeballs had popped out of his eye sockets accidentally. Coupled with his grass-green ranger outfit, he looked like a giant frog walking upright. It was hard for me to imagine that he would feel comfortable wearing this thing.
"I have never seen so clearly as I do now!" After putting on his glasses, Xian Ge Yayi looked around excitedly, as if he wished he could hide the whole world in his eyes.
"Well, can you see the name of that man over there?" I was still very skeptical, so I pointed out the window at a minotaur named "Deeply Loved" not far away and asked him.
Even with his glasses on, this distance was still a little too far for Xian Ge Yayi. He stretched his neck out of the window, squinted his eyes and stared carefully for a long time, then said slowly, word by word, "One...pillar...holding up...the sky?"
"Pfft... what did you say?" Whether Xian Ge Yayi was completely blind after wearing the glasses and couldn't see anything, or whether he was very observant and could see things that even I couldn't see clearly, I couldn't be more shocked than this answer. He was so wrong that even my reaction speed to jump from one word to another couldn't keep up with his language.
"That's right, it's these four words." Xian Ge Yayi turned around and looked at me innocently. His big watery eyes were refracted into circles by the thick lenses, like ripples on the water. He picked up the quill again and wrote down the name he saw on the paper:
"One, live, love, add..."
It turns out that the "glasses" did have some effect on improving Xiange Yayi's vision , but...
"Idiot! Illiterate! You read half of four words wrong. You might as well be a blind man..." I pulled his long ears and cursed at him!
