Volume 1: First Arrival Chapter 007 A New Beginning
Wow, wow, wow, wow!
Kirk rubbed his face vigorously with hot water in his hands to wash away the tiredness and sleepiness of the whole night. He looked up at the face in the bathroom mirror, but he still couldn't get used to it.
He had short chestnut brown hair, dark blue eyes, and sparse eyebrows that extended along his deep and distinct brow bone. The dim light in the bathroom cast a shadow along his straight nose, hiding half of his cheek, but it still couldn't conceal the light green stubble that had grown wildly in just one night.
Sure enough, three weeks is far from enough to get familiar with a completely unfamiliar skin.
Especially the beard and hair.
Letting out a long breath, Kirk deftly took out the razor and shaving cream and quickly finished the shaving. Then he wet his hands again and spent a lot of effort to make each hair, which seemed to have its own consciousness, slouch back into place, to ensure that the birds would not mistake this place for their home.
"Kirk!"
Outside the bathroom, a shocking shout was heard, breaking the early morning tranquility of the apartment.
After waiting for a while, there was no response from Kirk. The voice seemed to be accustomed to it and called out again, then continued talking to itself.
"Kirk, didn't you go to the supermarket yesterday? I told you there was no milk or orange juice left. I can't just soak my cereal in beer, can I?"
"I already told you, we are out of paper towels and laundry detergent, the fridge is almost empty, eggs, bacon, toast, everything."
"Jesus Christ, you didn't go to the laundry room last night either, did you?"
Babbling on and on, he could complete the conversation on the other side of the door without Kirk.
However, that was not his mother, but his younger brother, his biological brother——
Nate Hull, an assistant U.S. attorney in New York.
Thirteen years ago, in a vicious home robbery, the Hull couple were both killed. The villain escaped, and the two brothers escaped by hiding in the closet.
Until now, the murderer has not been caught, there is no truth, and no justice; but deep in memory, the image of that pool of blood seems to have never faded.
That year, Kirk was seventeen years old and Nate was fourteen years old. Since then, the two brothers have depended on each other. In the blink of an eye, more than ten years have slipped through their fingers.
At this time, Kirk had finished cleaning up and left the bathroom and came to the living room, where he saw Nate mumbling in the kitchen.
The two Hull brothers live in an ordinary small apartment. After all, in Manhattan, where every inch of land is valuable, the expensive rent is enough to make ordinary office workers tighten their pitiful wallets.
Of course, if you don't mind the unbearable traffic jams during rush hour, choosing to live in New Jersey will allow you to see a whole new world.
But for the two brothers, the small two-bedroom, one-living-room apartment was enough.
Pushing open the main door is the lobby. Through the spacious and bright windows, one can see the fire escape outside. The red brick wall, sycamore trees and the high and low city horizon across the street are visible through the rusty squares, like a natural landscape painting.
There are two bedrooms at the left and right ends of the hall, and there is also a kitchen and a bathroom at the left corner of the door.
The apartment, with blue and gray as the main colors, looks calm and generous. Looking from the open door of the bedroom, you can tell at a glance:
The room on the right side of the door, which looks like a tornado has just passed through it, belongs to Kirk; the room on the far left side of the door, which is so clean that there is not a trace of dust, belongs to Nate.
It is really hard to imagine how Nate managed to survive such difficult days and nights.
Although Nate kept nagging, Kirk ignored him and raised his eyebrows slightly, "Oh, I'm wearing a combat suit today, so today is the day to go to court?"
White shirt and black suit, this is Nate's best suit.
That year, Kirk used his entire month's income to have a suit tailored for Nate at a professional tailor shop. The suit fit him perfectly and outlined the lines of his shoulders and waist.
Although Nate is slightly shorter than Kirk, he is still 5.9 feet (180 cm) tall. The suit, which is neither too much nor too little, perfectly shows Nate's imposing temperament.
Because of this, this suit has become Nate's exclusive suit for court, formal enough and imposing enough.
The finishing touch is a royal blue tie with a neat and full Windsor knot to complete the outfit.
The point is, Nate, dressed in a suit and tie, wearing an apron and holding a frying pan, is... frying eggs and bacon. The sizzling sound is like the drizzle in the early afternoon of June, and the charming aroma rushes out of the kitchen and lingers in the house.
Nate turned around with the pan in hand and glared at Kirk speechlessly, but answered honestly, "Yes, today is court day."
As he spoke, Nate put all the fried eggs and bacon in the pan into his plate, looking at his brother who was sitting lazily across from the open kitchen. He seemed to notice Kirk's speechless look, which made Nate feel guilty. He dodged his gaze and then complained with his neck stiffened.
"I told you the fridge was out of stock."
Then, Nate picked up the breakfast cereal next to him and poured it into the round bowl in front of Kirk, but there was no milk.
It's like dog food.
Nate seemed to have anticipated Kirk's complaint, and he preemptively glared at Kirk and awkwardly changed the subject.
"Detective Agency, is everything okay?"
"Well... we are on track. We made some progress yesterday."
This is the truth——
Although Steve kept his mouth shut, his actions often reveal more.
Considering Steve's position, he should be an experienced person, if not a master strategist. However, he behaved so out of control in front of Jeff Minghella.
Obviously, this is not normal.
What is the reason?
In fact, Steve could have simply refused the interview and called it a day, but he didn't.
In Kirk's opinion, the sudden appearance of "Jeff Minghella" disrupted Steve's expectations, and he also had a sudden impulse to find out the reporter's background.
What's more important is how much truth the reporter knows, how much evidence he has, and how the investigation is going. This is what leads to the office confrontation.
Kirk's words must have hurt something, and Steve's anger was more like a performance, a smokescreen to divert attention in an emergency.
It was crude and crude, but in such a hurry, Steve didn't have time to sort out his thoughts, so he did it in a hurry -
Fortunately, he did not choose Broadway as his career plan.
So, what is Steve hiding?
Perhaps this case is indeed not that simple, which also means that the direction of the investigation needs to be adjusted.
Looking at Kirk who was lost in thought, Nate felt a little uncomfortable. He took a deep breath and after hesitating for a while, he finally said it.
"I think you are much better than the current police officers. It would be their loss if they missed you."
Kirk nodded slightly, revealing a serious and excellent expression, "Yeah, I think so too."
That look, that expression, that tone, made Nate roll his eyes, "I shouldn't have said that, God, I shouldn't have..."
