Chapter 9: Troubles of High School Students

The key high school in the city that He Shu was admitted to is a closed school, and students cannot go to school even if it is close to home.
This means boarding, living in school from Monday to Friday.
He Shu sat staring at his mother's photo for a long time before he took his luggage and walked out of the house.
When he brought his things to the assigned dormitory, he unexpectedly found that Lai Huaguang was in the same dormitory with him.
He Shu didn't know that Lai Huaguang had also been admitted. Since that time, the two of them acted as if they didn't know each other and no one spoke to each other.
He Shu made his own bed while Lai Huaguang sat on the side playing with the latest model of mobile phone, which was a reward from his family for getting admitted to a key university.
After a while, Lai Huaguang's mother came in carrying some things. When she saw He Shu recognized him, she immediately looked unhappy.
"Why are you sharing a room with him? Come on, mom will take you to find the teacher, and we will change dormitories." Lai Huaguang's mother put down her things and was about to pull Lai Huaguang away, but Lai Huaguang shook her hand off.
"Mom, please be quiet. Why are you making such a fuss when school starts? Will I still study here in the future?"
"Baby, isn't this for your own good? What if you live with him and he learns bad things?" Lai Huaguang's mother is very aggressive outside, but she speaks softly to her son.
"Why are you so annoying? How many times have I told you not to call me baby? I'm so old now, I'll be laughed at if others hear me!"
He Shu pretended not to hear and continued to make his bed, but the less he responded, the more Lai Huaguang felt that he was making fun of him.
"Okay, go away. I can do it myself." Lai Huaguang pushed his mother out of the dormitory and locked the door.
Lai Huaguang's mother gave a few instructions outside the door and left reluctantly.
Touching the shallow scar at the corner of his eye, even though the two of them didn't get along, He Shu still envied Lai Huaguang for having a mother who would nag him.
He Shu took all the daily necessities he might need with him. He put in order, then found a book and sat on the bed to read.
Lai Huaguang glanced at He Shu with disdain. He stuffed the things his mother brought under the bed and continued to play with his mobile phone while lying on the bed.
Not long after, several other people in the dormitory also arrived. They all came with their parents helping with their luggage. Apart from a few adults exchanging a few words with each other, He Shu and the other students didn't say much.
On the first day, I got familiar with the school, class and teachers, and on the second day, classes officially started.
At night, when going to bed, Lai Huaguang had already become friends with a few other boys. They played with their mobile phones together until the lights in the dormitory were turned off, and they were still talking in low voices.
He Shu didn’t have a cell phone and didn’t like to talk. Lai Huaguang exaggerated some bad things about him in front of other students , and he was isolated by his roommates on the first day...
Children in high school are different from those in junior high school.
At this time, they have their own judgment, but if they find that unfamiliar strangers are not easy to get along with, they will not take the initiative to negotiate.
Lai Huaguang is very good at making friends, which He Shu can't learn.
He always came up with new things and was not stingy with his friends. Therefore, knowing that Lai Huaguang and He Shu didn't get along, those who were on good terms with him would naturally ignore He Shu.
Overall, He Shu's high school life was not pleasant. Fortunately, the school had strict management and he was not bullied as blatantly .
In fact, He Shu didn't care. He didn't like playing with them anyway. Except for classes and meals, he spent the rest of his time studying in his dormitory.
Xia Miao was not assigned to the same class as He Shu and was disappointed for a long time. Fortunately, she could find He Shu in the cafeteria at mealtime every day.
She didn't care whether He Shu paid attention to her or not, and she would go to He Shu with her food tray every day.
Before long, word spread around the school that Xia Miao and He Shu were a couple and were in love.
No matter whether they are freshmen or seniors, they all point and talk when they are seen in the cafeteria.
Children of this age, who are on the verge of adulthood, have a better understanding of the opposite sex.
This made the whispers even more unbearable.
When Xia Miao heard the discussions, she felt sweet and embarrassed at the same time, but she did not get angry, nor did she back down.
He Shu didn't react to this at all. He seemed to be shutting himself out from everything.
He didn't want to have anything with Xia Miao. Firstly, they were not yet adults, and He Shu didn't want to promise anything to others at an age when he was not capable of taking responsibility.
Secondly, He Shu didn't have much affection for other women except his mother.
Especially, he doesn't believe in love. This may be a little sad. He is at the age when he should believe in love the most, but he avoids this word.
But every time he told Xia Miao coldly not to follow him, the girl's aggrieved expression and the sparkling light in her eyes made He Shu unable to bear to continue to drive her away.
Over time, He Shu got used to her chattering non-stop while he was eating every day.
This feeling was very strange. Sometimes when she didn't come on time, He Shu would actually feel like something was missing.
Life in school is plain and orderly, and the meals in the cafeteria are more nutritious than what you cook at home.
He Shu grew a lot taller after entering high school, but he was still a little thin compared to his peers.
He Zhicheng came to see his son several times, but was always treated with lukewarm regard. Later, he stopped coming and left a bank card into which he deposited 300 or 500 yuan at irregular intervals every month.
This was all he could secretly save now. Song Jing held his salary card, and He Zhicheng was too lazy to ask her for it. He felt too tired.
Ever since Song Jing gave birth to the child, He Zhicheng seemed to have aged ten years.
He Shu watched coldly, feeling that this was retribution for He Zhicheng.
Sometimes retribution will find the wrong person. For example, He Shu felt that he was innocent and very upset.
Lai Huaguang, who had already isolated He Shu, still felt that he had won.
But when Lai Huaguang heard the gossip on campus that made He Shu and Xia Miao a perfect couple, he suddenly felt unwell.
He liked Xia Miao and had liked her since junior high school. Even though he changed classes after junior high school, he never fell in love with other girls.
Lai Huaguang doesn't understand what's wrong with him?
That He Shu holds a book every day, his face is so pale and he has no expression, like a ghost. Lai Huaguang doesn't think he is handsome at all, instead he thinks he is creepy. Is there something wrong with girls' eyes?
After living together for almost a semester, Lai Huaguang felt that he had discovered He Shu's secret.
He always wore school uniform at school, and even on Friday afternoons when the school allowed people to wear whatever they wanted, he never changed into other clothes.
He always had only two pairs of shoes all year round, which he wore alternately and brushed back and forth until the uppers became hairy.
He always uses the same towel, and although he washes it very clean every day, it has become almost transparent.
It seemed that He Shu would use everything until it was no longer usable before replacing it. His sheets and quilts had all lost their color after being washed.
"Poor bastard, I don't know how he has the nerve to be with others."
When He Shu returned to the dormitory to wash up, he heard Lai Huaguang lying on the bed and making indirect accusations. This had happened more than once or twice, and He Shu was too lazy to care and just pretended not to hear it.
He walked to the balcony and took back the towels and clothes he had hung outside, only to see that the towels had been torn into strips by something.
Fortunately, the school uniform was not marked. It costs a lot of money to buy a set of school uniform.
He Shu folded the clothes and looked at Lai Huaguang, only to see him quickly turn his head away. He was also secretly observing him. This childish behavior of covering one's ears and stealing the bell made He Shu feel that it was not worth getting angry.
Shaking his head, He Shu walked out of the dormitory carrying the basin of water and the rotten towel.
Before turning off the lights at night, Lai Huaguang saw a new towel on He Shu's clothes hanger, as white as his bloodless face.
Lai Huaguang curled his lips, and for some unknown reason, an idea came to his mind.
