Chapter 8 People Like Him
As night fell, Cheng Xiang carried Chen Shuya on his back as they walked down the street. Both sides of the street were lined with sycamore trees. Amid the bustling crowd, Chen Shuya couldn't help but tighten her arms around Cheng Xiang.
Cheng Xiang smiled and said, "Are you going to strangle me to death?"
Chen Shuya quickly loosened her grip, rested her chin on Cheng Xiang's shoulder, and whispered in his ear, "Whoever marries you in the future will be very happy."
Cheng Xiang, who was standing under him, smiled and asked, "Why?"
"Hmm..." Chen Shuya thought for a moment and replied, "I don't know, I just feel that you are very reliable, and no one should dislike you."
The night was dark, covering up the emotions in Cheng Xiang's eyes. After a moment of silence, he spoke in a hoarse voice: "The person you saw that day was my mother."
"Huh?" Chen Shuya didn't react for a moment.
Cheng Xiang went on to say, "When I was seven, she divorced my dad because she thought he was poor. At that time, I cried and begged her not to abandon me, but she left anyway."
After a pause, he continued, "She doesn't like me, otherwise she wouldn't have abandoned me."
After hearing what Cheng Xiang said, Chen Shuya was stunned. She didn't expect that Cheng Xiang would have such a story.
After a long while, Chen Shuya smiled softly. She tried to make her tone cheerful: "She has no vision. You are the best person in the world. I will protect you from now on."
Cheng Xiang was stunned for a moment, then he smiled. At that moment, he felt as if he had a little sun on his back.
"Elementary school student."
…
After that night, Chen Shuya didn't see Xu Yang for two days.
Chen Shuya didn't meet Cheng Xiang until the day when the school held a summary meeting after the high school entrance examination in the auditorium.
In the school auditorium, Chen Shuya went on stage to speak as a student representative. During her speech, she saw Cheng Xiang sitting in the last row.
In the corner of the last row, he was still sitting there lazily, his chin supported by his right hand, looking at her quietly.
Chen Shuya unconsciously smiled and looked away.
After the speech, Chen Shuya bumped into Cheng Xiang as soon as she stepped out of the auditorium. She stepped back a few steps and smiled, "What a coincidence."
Cheng Xiang nodded slightly: "What a coincidence."
After saying hello, Cheng Xiang was just about to leave when there was a "click" sound and the pendant on Chen Shuya's neck broke and fell to the ground.
Chen Shuya hurriedly picked it up and brushed off the dust. Cheng Xiang glanced at it without saying anything and walked around her.
Chen Shuya bit her lip and tried clumsily to fasten the button of the pendant at the back of her neck with both hands, but she couldn't do it for a long time.
The more anxious she was, the harder it was to put on the pendant. Chen Shuya resisted the urge to step on the pendant and tried to put it on violently.
Suddenly, her hand touched something cold. Chen Shuya turned around hurriedly and saw Cheng Xiang taking her pendant calmly. He held the pendant in one hand and stroked her long hair to her shoulders with the other hand.
The cold fingers brushed across Chen Shuya's skin, and she couldn't help but shiver.
"Okay." Cheng Xiang's cold voice reached Chen Shuya's ears. She pushed her hair back behind her shoulders and said softly, "Thank you."
Sitting at the desk in front of and behind Cheng Xiang, Chen Shuya would occasionally turn her head to observe his learning style.
During class, Cheng Xiang sat lazily leaning against the back of his chair, his slender fingers twirling a gel pen out of boredom. When the teacher was explaining the questions on the blackboard, he didn't even raise his head once.
After class, Chen Shuya turned around and pushed a book onto Cheng Xiang's desk. Cheng Xiang glanced at it and saw a few big words printed on the cover:
“Five years of college entrance examination and three years of simulation.”
Cheng Xiang moved his gaze to Chen Shuya's face. The person opposite him was looking at him seriously and said, "Do what you can do."
After a few seconds of silence, Cheng Xiang said slowly, "I don't know either."
In an instant, the air seemed to freeze.
Chen Shuya pursed her lips, reached out to flip through the book and found a most basic question, motioning Cheng Xiang to come closer: "I'll tell you the simplest one."
Ning Yan, who was chatting with Yang Yi, suddenly raised his chin and motioned Yang Yi to look back: "Why do they have such a strong sense of couple?"
The scorching afternoon sun shone through the window onto Chen Shuya and Cheng Xiang, and the two were enveloped in the light.
Chen Shuya had her hair tied in a loose high ponytail and was holding a pen as she lowered her head to explain a question to Cheng Xiang seriously. Her small face had smooth lines, her slightly upturned eyes were shining, there was a mole on the right side of her high nose bridge, and her lightly made-up face was full of tranquility.
Cheng Xiang beside him was reading a book with his chin on his hand. His fair face was a little cold, his eyes were dark and deep, and he exuded a youthful feeling.
Cheng Xiang supported his chin and occasionally looked at Chen Shuya who was concentrating on writing something, then looked away after a few seconds.
Ning Yan couldn't help but shook his head: "I hit it."
Yang Yi said without surprise: "It's only a matter of time for them. The confession has already been spread on the wall."
Five minutes later, Cheng Xiang began to lean forward on the table, his eyelids drooping, and the hand holding the pen gradually lost strength.
Five minutes later, Cheng Xiang completely collapsed on the table and fell into a deep sleep.
When Cheng Xiang woke up again, it was already time to go home from school. Chen Shuya packed her schoolbag and gently pushed Cheng Xiang awake.
Cheng Xiang sat up sleepily, and Chen Shuya said softly, "School is over. I'm leaving first. You should go home early too."
After saying that, Chen Shuya took the good things and went outside to look for Ning Yan.
On the way home with Ning Yan, Ning Yan suddenly asked her: "Is there something going on between you and Cheng Xiang?"
Chen Shuya was stunned and asked in confusion: "What's going on?"
"It's just about love."
Chen Shuya pursed her lips and shook her head: "No."
"No?" Ning Yan turned his head to look at her, his tone full of regret: "You two are such a good match, why don't you stay together?"
Chen Shuya didn't say anything else. People like Cheng Xiang were too difficult to catch.
If she is the only one who likes him, she can pat her chest and tell him frankly: It doesn’t matter if they don’t like you, even if the world is facing collapse, I will stand behind you.
But too many people like him, she is like an unknown wheat seedling in the wheat field, and his sight may never find himself in the corner.
