Chapter 49: Imprisonment
It was hot, humid, smelly and dark.
This is the prison environment. Fortunately, Liu Zhengfeng lives in a single cell, otherwise he would suffer even more.
The food was even more difficult to describe, it was simply terrible. Liu Zhengfeng was miserable. In the first two days, he only drank water, didn't eat, and slept soundly every day.
On the third day, he was so hungry that he could not bear it anymore and had been banging on the iron gate since morning. However, he was scolded by the prison guards, who said that the prison did not provide breakfast and he had to just bear with it if he was hungry.
Liu Zhengfeng burst out laughing. He never thought that he would be in such an embarrassing situation. He was like a tiger in plain land being bullied by a dog.
He slowly sat down on the ground, feeling dizzy and his stomach growling with hunger. He sighed and thought it would be better to lie on the ground to save energy and not feel so uncomfortable.
Two hours later, footsteps were suddenly heard in the corridor.
Liu Zhengfeng was startled and opened his eyes. In the past two days, the prison guard had been walking around alone. Why were there two footsteps now? Who was the other person?
The footsteps stopped in front of Liu Zhengfeng's cell, and Liu Zhengfeng suddenly smelled a familiar scent. Yes, it was the scent of orange blossoms. He was very familiar with this scent because it was the scent of his mother.
Liu Zhengfeng slowly turned his head and saw a woman about fifty years old standing next to the prison guard. She was tall, wearing a purple dress, with a fair face and elegant temperament. It was indeed his mother, Wang Dongmei.
Liu Zhengfeng was surprised and delighted. He jumped up and stumbled to the iron gate. He asked in a trembling voice, "Mom, why are you here?"
At this time, the prison guard said, "I'll give you fifteen minutes, hurry up." Then he walked away quickly.
Wang Dongmei smiled and nodded: "I see, thank you."
She slowly turned her head, looked at Liu Zhengfeng, frowned, and her snow-white face was full of love.
"How did Mr. Liu from Ren'ai Girls' High School, the suave prince charming in the hearts of countless girls, become like this?"
Liu Zhengfeng was stunned for a moment, then smiled and said, "Mom, don't you think I'm very manly now? I think I'm much better looking than a pretty boy, so this is good."
Wang Dongmei sighed and said, "Son, you said you were a soldier and fighting in the war, fighting against the Japanese and saving the country, but how did you end up in prison?"
Liu Zhengfeng shook his head and smiled bitterly: "Mom, this is a long story, I'll tell you later."
Wang Dongmei raised her eyebrows: "Isn't it just a matter of risking one's life for a beautiful woman? What's so complicated about it? We can talk about it later."
Liu Zhengfeng was stunned for a moment, his eyes widened: "Mom, who told you?"
Wang Dongmei rolled her eyes at him and said, "Who else could it be? It's the stunning beauty you saved, her name is... her name is Li Rong. She's still out there, and your father is also out there. This prison only allows one person to visit, so I had to come alone."
Liu Zhengfeng exclaimed, "Ah!" It turned out to be her. No wonder she asked for his home address a few days ago.
"Mom, I did it willingly, don't blame her."
Wang Dongmei said: "Why should I blame her? This girl is as beautiful as a fairy and has many talents. Who can bear to blame her? If you can marry her, it will be a blessing for you to cultivate for three lifetimes."
Liu Zhengfeng smiled and said, "Mom, I know, I know, that's why I will fight for her. If it's another female demon, I won't care about her."
Wang Dongmei suddenly became serious: "Don't be so playful, be serious, tell the truth, how will the summit deal with you?"
Liu Zhengfeng put away his smile and said formally, "Mom, they will keep me in prison for a month . I'm not lying to you."
Wang Dongmei suddenly had a strange expression on her face, her eyes sparkling: "Feng'er, tell me, why do you think they can only keep you for a month at most? That's a human life."
Liu Zhengfeng said: "There are two reasons. First, killing someone means paying with one's life since ancient times. This is a matter of course. They haven't killed me yet, which means they don't want to kill me. Otherwise, they wouldn't have let me travel thousands of miles from Dabie Mountains to Wuhan."
"Second, the Japanese devils are now besieging Wuhan from all directions. Although the Nationalist Army has dispatched a million troops, I think we are still no match for the Japanese. Wuhan will be lost sooner or later. Who in the Nationalist government will care about people like me at that time? People like me who made a small mistake will definitely be released before Wuhan falls."
Wang Dongmei was silent for a while, then sighed: "You are just like your father, both of you are crow-mouthed. Why don't you hope for Wuhan to be better, but insist on saying it will fall?"
Liu Zhengfeng was startled: "So my dad thinks the same way. Great minds think alike."
Wang Dongmei sighed again and said, "This is really weird. You and your son said almost the same thing. He also said that you will be released and told me not to be too sad. Could it be... could it be that Wuhan is really doomed?"
Liu Zhengfeng couldn't help feeling sad when he saw his mother was in a low mood. Japan invaded China and occupied most of the territory. Wuhan was far from the end and the days to come would be even more difficult.
"Mom, to be honest, Wuhan can't be defended anymore. You and Dad should find a way to leave as soon as possible."
Wang Dongmei smiled bitterly and said, "Pingjin has fallen, North China has fallen, Shanghai has fallen, Nanjing has fallen, Wuhan has fallen. Alas, where can we go? Where can such a great country go?"
These words are filled with infinite sadness, despair and unwillingness.
Liu Zhengfeng suddenly laughed: "Mom, failure is temporary. The situation is not as pessimistic as you think. The leaders of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party have both made speeches on protracted resistance, especially Teacher Mao's (On Protracted War), which is even more thought-provoking. We can give up the lost territory now, but we cannot lose the belief that we will win."
Wang Dongmei's eyes lit up and a smile appeared on her face: "We can't lose the belief that we must win. This sentence is really well said. Son, I find that your level of thinking is better than your father's. It's great. It's my fault. I shouldn't be so depressed."
Liu Zhengfeng smiled and said, "Mom, the problem we need to solve now is how to leave Wuhan and go to Chongqing, the temporary capital of the Nationalist Government."
Wang Dongmei was silent for a while. "Wait a minute, I will discuss it with your father before making a decision. You must be starving. Come, mom brought you some lancelets and beggar's chicken from Tongfu Restaurant. Take your time to eat."
As she spoke, she placed a box in her hand in front of the iron gate and opened the lid. The aroma of food wafted out and filled the room with fragrance.
Liu Zhengfeng was overjoyed. He was so hungry that he began to salivate.
Wang Dongmei looked at her son who was wolfing down his food, her eyes were red and her nose was slightly sour. She choked up and said, "Feng'er, eat slowly. This is all I can do."
"Okay, okay, time's up, you should go now."
At some point, the prison guards came to the two of them and kept urging them.
Wang Dongmei nodded, her face full of sadness and tears in her eyes: "Feng'er, Mom is gone, take care of yourself."
Liu Zhengfeng was born in a different world and was able to meet such a good mother. He was overwhelmed with emotions . He looked at Wang Dongmei's gradually receding back and couldn't help but burst into tears.
