Chapter 44 Caitlin's Persistence
Sheriff Marcos, the number one commander of Piltover law enforcement, Caitlin's respected superior.
"What did you say...Sheriff Marcos?" She couldn't believe it.
A young law enforcement officer going astray and the Piltover Sheriff being involved in gangs and violence are two completely different things.
Caitlin, who was young and inexperienced, was mentally prepared for the former, but she could not accept the latter no matter what .
Not to mention her. Even those Zaun students who had always been willing to speculate about the Piltover law enforcement officers with the greatest malice, opened their mouths in disbelief. Their eyes were getting bigger and bigger, which was really eye-opening.
"Really...really!" Looking at the terrifying air current that was pressing down on him, the young law enforcement officer simply gave up and said through clenched teeth, "Sheriff Marcos told me to do this."
"Did he say why?" Levi asked.
"without."
"Then do you know me?"
“I don’t know…”
"You don't know why I deserve to die, and you have no grudge against me. But you can kill me without any psychological burden just because of the sheriff's order."
"I say..." The airflow quietly accelerated, as cold as the autumn wind: "This isn't the first time, right?"
"W-what?" The young law enforcement officer broke out in a cold sweat.
"Why are you so skilled?"
"How many people did you help the sheriff kill to be like this now, where your heartbeat doesn't speed up and your breathing doesn't get heavier when you kill people?"
"How many times have similar incidents like today happened before? How many people like you are there among law enforcement officers? How many innocent people have died at the hands of your guns over the years?"
Levi's repeated questioning gave everyone a terrible thought:
Yes... According to the "Thousands of Cockroaches in a House" theory, when you find a cockroach in your house, there must be more than one nest of cockroaches in your house.
This law enforcement officer was just a newcomer, but he was able to carry out the sheriff's order for extrajudicial execution so skillfully.
What about the other law enforcement officers? They stood on the dry shore one by one with a solemn and upright manner. Are they really that clean?
The expressions of the law enforcement officers present were very interesting. Some were shocked, some were guilty, and some were expressionless.
The energy that was held in Caitlin's eyes also dissipated unconsciously.
Even though Levi had loosened the restraints in time, she still lay on the ground blankly, not knowing what she was thinking.
"Ms. Caitlin." Levi waved his hand to dispel the noisy airflow: "Do you still believe that the laws of Piltover can bring me justice?"
Caitlin was speechless.
"Think about it carefully. Everyone, think about it carefully." Levi finally sighed deeply to Caitlin and the students, and prepared to leave.
But just as he walked out the door, Caitlin staggered to her feet: "Wait."
"Do you have anything else to do?"
Caitlin took a deep breath and said sincerely: "Mr. Levi, please stay."
"I believe that the laws of Piltover are not wrong, and the fairness and justice I pursue are not wrong... The only ones who are wrong are those parasites who have failed to live up to the word justice! So, please stay and cooperate with my investigation - no matter who is hiding behind this, I will definitely bring him to justice!"
"Even if you have to face your colleagues?" Levi asked.
"Yes!" She nodded firmly.
"Including Sheriff Marcos?"
"......Yeah!" Her eyes became more determined.
As she spoke, Caitlin took out a pair of handcuffs from her waist... and with a snap, she put them on the young law enforcement officer's hands.
"You are under arrest," she told her colleague mercilessly, "and the people behind you can't escape either."
“Miss Caitlyn!” The old police officer in charge looked helpless, “I beg you… stop, stop messing around! That’s Sheriff Marcos! If that guy wants to leave, just let him go… You’ll only cause unrest in the entire Piltover and cause trouble for everyone!”
Caitlin remained unmoved despite her superior's earnest advice.
She just looked at Levi sincerely: "Mr. Levi, can you trust me again and believe in the laws and justice of Piltover once?"
If it were before, hearing such an innocent question, Levi would only laugh speechlessly.
But the same words spoken by different people have completely different weight.
"Miss Caitlin." Levi did not answer, but asked back: "Excuse me, are you talking to me as the law enforcement officer Caitlin-"
"Or are you making a promise to me as Caitlin Gilaman, the legitimate daughter of the Gilaman family?"
"Huh? How do you know I am..."
"It's not important. I just want to confirm what identity you are speaking in. If it's the former, then we don't need to talk about it."
Caitlin's face flushed.
What she hated most was that others labeled her as a congressman's daughter and ignored her own pursuits and efforts. She just wanted to be an ordinary law enforcement officer who did not rely on family power.
But Levi said to her bluntly: "Be frank, Miss Gillaman."
" If you didn't have a good mother and a good background, just based on what you just said, you would die here with me."
"On the one hand, you enjoy the privileges brought by your family background, and on the other hand, you try your best to reject its existence... Don't you think that this is deceiving yourself?"
Caitlin's face felt hot as if she had a fever.
No one had ever dared to speak to her like this before, even though everyone might have thought so in their hearts.
"I...I understand." She bit her lip tightly and promised unwillingly: "I swear on the honor of the Jiraman family that I will ensure your safety, Mr. Levi, and find out the whole truth of this matter!"
"No matter who commits a crime or breaks the law, I will not let him escape punishment!"
"Miss Caitlin!" the old police officer was still begging in a low voice: "Please calm down first... Hey!"
Even Levi asked her playfully, "'The whole truth', 'No matter who it is'... Miss Gilaman, are you sure you want to do this?"
"Sure!" Caitlin stressed, "Even if the criminal is Sheriff Marcos, I will not back down!"
"What if it's not just Chief Marcos? What if there's some more important person involved?"
"What do you mean by this?"
"Nothing, I just asked casually." Levi was indeed asking casually.
He did not understand the conflict of interest between Marcos and the Iron Fist Gang.
But according to the history he had learned, whether it was the history of Earth or the history of Runeterra...
For an "ancient dynasty" like Piltover that has lasted unchanged for 300 years, once you start investigating some things, what you find out is often not just one person, but a network.
People are connected to people, networks are connected to networks, the forces are intertwined, and their tentacles spread in all directions.
They are not some rotten dead meat.
They are probably the blood vessels and meridians of this ancient city, full of vitality and vigor.
Finding out the whole truth...is easier said than done.
Caitlin is a young and inexperienced person who deserves admiration, but...
"I'm afraid you can't change anything." Levi murmured.
"What did you say?" Caitlin didn't hear clearly.
“Nothing…” People who have the ability and willingness to do good things are always good.
Killing one cockroach means one less, and digging out one piece of rotten meat means one less. There is definitely a positive meaning. It is better than doing nothing.
There was no need for him to act like a decadent person who saw through the fickleness of the world and make sarcastic remarks to a passionate young person like Caitlin.
Apart from his sarcastic remarks, Levi did have some profound insights to share.
But given Caitlin's social background... he really didn't dare to rashly tell Caitlin these things and let her know what he really wanted to do.
Moreover, some truths are useless when spoken verbally.
She has to experience it herself.
"Well, Miss Caitlin." Levi firmly held Caitlin's hand, "Since you want to clean up this city, I will accompany you to see--"
“Where on earth does all this dirt in this city come from!”
