Chapter 241: Choose One
"Lord Zachary Norman, and...Hannah Connell?"
Jimmy, who was formerly from the Westham Militia and is now the deputy chief of the Innadri Police Department, came to Agent Monk's desk and looked down at the names on his notebook: "Are these two people from Moses Port the only ones who entered the city yesterday?"
"Five, to be exact." Agent Monk turned his investigation notes towards Jimmy. "Baron Norman brought a butler and two servants."
Jimmy nodded. It was not strange for aristocrats to travel with entourage. "Who is this Hannah Connell?"
"She's a salesperson at a high-end jewelry store in Port Moses," Agent Monk said. "That's what the woman's ID information on South City Hotel Street says. I sent a telegram to the jewelry store in Port Moses and her identity has been confirmed."
After a pause, Agent Monk added: "She claimed to the hotel that she had an aunt living in Innadri, but she hadn't been in touch for many years and didn't know where her aunt had moved to. She hoped to find her."
Jimmy carefully read the part about Hannah Connell in the investigation notes and said strangely, "A young woman came to another place alone to look for her lost relatives?"
Agent Monk took out his pipe from the drawer, lit it with a match, and squinted his eyes. "According to the hotel staff, a young man brought Hannah Connell to the hotel to stay. The young man's accent sounded like someone from Innaderi. Judging from his earnest attitude, he seemed to be Hannah Connell's suitor... Our agents are investigating the man's identity."
The common language of the continent was spread from the north to the south during the last war of the gods. Due to its simple grammar and concise writing, it was quickly accepted by the southern and eastern countries of the continent of Napalm. However, due to different language habits in different places, it has more or less local accents.
It's okay for city people, as they meet outsiders frequently and have mutual influence with each other, so most of them have no communication barriers. However, if it's country people who rarely see outsiders for several years, their accents will be quite heavy... For example, the common language in the countryside of Westham sounds almost like listening to Indians speaking English.
Jimmy frowned and said, "Hannah Connell speaks without an accent?"
"Port Moses is a big city. If Miss Hannah has lived in Port Moses for ten years, no, more than five years, it is normal for her to have no accent." Agent Monk said strictly, "Of course, it is also possible that Miss Hannah has a good family background... I just don't know if there is such a respectable family named Connell in Port Moses."
The fact that metropolitans and sophisticated families speak with little accent is not enough to prove that Hannah Connell is a suspect.
"Okay. What about Baron Norman?" Jimmy asked, "What intelligence can you find out?"
After the access control in the Central City area was lifted, although people with "poor" clothes would still look out of place when entering the Central City area, at least the Central City area is no longer a mysterious and untouchable area for most people in the city, and it also provides a lot of convenience for the detectives of the Public Security Department in their investigations.
"After Baron Norman entered the city yesterday, he first visited Mrs. Virgil, the widowed baroness on Second Avenue in the Midtown area. The Virgil family owns a leather workshop and a match factory in the South City area, as well as ."
Agent Monk showed his matchbox with the Virgil family name printed on the front.
"Afterwards, Baron Norman did not stay at Virgil's house. Instead, he chose to stay at a hotel on Sapphire Street and sent out his servants twice to inquire about the news of vampires and undead on the streets." Agent Monk blew out a smoke ring and said, "Our agent took this opportunity to contact the servants. It is certain that Baron Norman's two servants are just ordinary people... Their reactions when they were hit by the agent's bicycle were exactly the same as those of ordinary people."
The anthropomorphic disguise of a vampire is difficult to detect, but it is easy to detect the vampire's blood slaves: the blood slaves have no sense of pain and will not react even if they lose an arm or a leg.
Jimmy stroked his chin and thought for a while, then said with a headache, "There seems to be something suspicious about these two people...but I can't find any suspicious points."
"Yes, unfortunately we can only wait patiently for their next move." Agent Monk sighed.
When vampires go about their business, they either injure or kill people - ordinary people whose blood is sucked away will fall into a period of weakness, and in more serious cases, they may even fall seriously ill.
This is something that no one wants to see, but there is nothing they can do except wait... Whether it is trying to imprison an innocent young lady looking for her relatives, or offending a baron, the consequences are not something Agent Monk and Jimmy can bear - the current City Hall has an accountability system, and everyone will have to pay the price for their recklessness.
The two backbones of the Public Security Department were having a headache when an agent ran in excitedly : "Deputy Chief Jimmy, Team Leader Monk! The target of Sapphire Street has moved!"
"Has Baron Norman made any move?" Agent Monk perked up, quickly knocked out the tobacco in his pipe, and stood up to take his coat and hat from the coat rack.
Before Agent Monk could rush to the scene to monitor it personally, another agent hurried upstairs: "Captain Monk, the target in the hotel area has moved!"
Before Agent Monk could get hung up on himself, Jimmy immediately said, "You go to Sapphire Street, and I'll go to South City."
Agent Monk knew that Jimmy only had experience working in the militia and did not care about the difference in position between the two. He reminded him, "Don't expose yourself even if you lose the target," and hurried away.
Baron Norman came to Innadri by renting a carriage by boat. He did not bring a coachman or a carriage with him, so he needed to rent another car to travel. When Agent Monk arrived at Sapphire Street, the Baron had just got on the rented carriage and was heading towards St. Joseph Street.
Agent Monk asked his colleague to go through the alley to St. Joseph Street to wait for pick-up, while he followed ahead.
Sapphire Street is the most commercially concentrated area in Midtown. Hotels that receive foreign guests, high-end restaurants, high-end shopping malls, high-end clothing stores, membership clubs open only to private individuals, and women's activity centers are mostly concentrated here. It is also one of the few streets in Midtown that the middle class and ordinary citizens can come and stroll before the access control is abolished - the luxurious life of the rich will always be missing something if there is no occasion to show off.
There are many horse-drawn carriages on the streets as the festive atmosphere remains. The carriage rented by Baron Norman is not traveling very fast, and Agent Monk can keep up with the target even when walking on the sidewalk.
Passing by a group of well-dressed ladies traveling with their maids, Agent Monk saw Baron Norman's rented carriage stop in front of a private tobacco club.
Agent Monk continued walking forward without looking around. When he was about to reach the main entrance of the Tobacco Club, he saw Baron Norman being helped out of the car by his butler out of the corner of his eye.
The Baron of Moses Port, dressed in a well-tailored suit and a fox fur coat, with his hair neatly combed, a bow tie under his Adam's apple and a pure gold pocket watch chain tied to the buttons of his suit, seemed to be trying hard to show his spirited side, but... his face was a little scary.
His complexion was paler than the heavily made-up and well-dressed ladies who had just passed by Agent Monk.
Agent Monk walked past the carriage without looking back.
When he reached the corner of the street, Agent Monk quickly went into the alley, turned his double-sided coat inside out, put the gray side on outside, took off his hat, quickly removed the special brim, and put it back on his head.
When he returns to the street, Agent Monk has changed from "a man in a black coat and a bowler hat" to "a man in a gray coat and a small bowler hat."
Agent Monk walked in front of the door of the Tobacco Club with confidence, and naturally... took out a Tobacco Club badge from his pocket and pinned it on his chest.
An official agent of the City Hall with an annual income of 120 gold coins is qualified to join the private club in Midtown. It's just that as a low-level member, it is difficult to talk to the noble members with status - unless the noble members can use you.
The doorman bowed politely to member Monk and led him into the lobby where ordinary members could enter and exit.
Monk looked out and found a seat with a good view and sat down. Then a waitress in formal attire came over, checked Agent Monk's membership information, and served him his preferred tobacco and drinks.
As a senior ordinary member, Monk was known by many people here. One of the men playing billiard and darts on the other side of the lobby waved at Monk with a smile.
Monk lit his pipe, held his glass of wine, and walked over in a relaxed manner, talking to these middle-class people who came to the private club in Midtown to develop their networks. He chatted and intentionally or unintentionally observed the location of the gate and the stairs leading to the VIP area on the second floor.
Baron Norman was a well-known figure in Moses Port, but he had not visited Innadri very often. At least Monk, who had been a member of the tobacco club for many years, had never heard of Baron Norman as a VIP in the club.
He specially left the hotel where he was staying and came here despite feeling unwell (doubtful). Obviously... Baron Norman was planning to meet someone here.
I just don't know if the person who is meeting with Baron Norman has arrived or not...
Agent Monk waited patiently for about ten minutes, and the doorman brought another person in.
Agent Monk glanced over and was stunned when he saw who was coming.
Lynch Clark, Captain of the Night Watch!
It is not surprising that Captain Clark, whose annual salary is much higher than that of the average middle class, appears in a private club in Midtown, but it is a bit strange that he appears in a tobacco club - this man does not smoke!
Agent Monk suppressed his doubts and continued to observe cautiously.
The doorman led Captain Clark to the stairs leading to the VIP area on the second floor and stopped.
Not everyone can enter the VIP area, and club staff cannot enter and leave at will.
After a while, a man came down from the second floor, bowed slightly to Captain Clark, and politely invited the captain of the Night Watch to go upstairs...and this man was Baron Norman's butler!
Agent Monk was stunned, and the doubts in his mind about Baron Norman's strange behavior were instantly resolved.
The person Baron Norman wants to meet is Captain Clarke - he is in trouble and needs help from the Night's Watch.
The fact that Baron Norman did not stay at Virgil's house suggests that his problem might be serious and contagious, or that he did not want Mrs. Virgil to discover his plight - he did not even visit the church on St. Joseph's Street, and it was obvious that he did not want his family's private affairs to be known.
Baron Norman sent his servant to inquire about vampires and the undead - he needed to verify whether Innadri's undead really had the ability to deal with strange events and dark creatures!
Agent Monk's hand holding his pipe trembled slightly.
Oh no... Deputy Commander Jimmy is in danger!
