Volume 4: The Sea and the Ship Heading North Chapter 223 Tower Under the Sea
Nick on the boat soon got the news from Lee.
After learning what Jon needed his help with, he didn't stop and immediately floated down to the sea from the boat.
For the ghost, the sea water was not an obstacle, and he dived into the water without any magical assistance.
After entering the sea, it feels like arriving in another world. The sunlight is refracted by the sea water, forming a dreamlike scene in the water.
There were a lot of marine life around the tower, and schools of fish were swimming around. Nick didn't cause any ripples in the water when he went into the water, so he didn't disturb them at all.
Nick floated towards the direction where the tower was underwater. From a distance, he saw four or five mermaids who were hunting in the opposite direction of him.
He didn't want to disturb them. The owner of the tower, the knight, had a good relationship with the mermaids around him. If these mermaids found any problems , there was no guarantee that they would not mention them to the knight.
The underwater part of the tower was not covered at all, and Nick could easily see the rough stone surface.
From the outside, these columns appear to be solid, with no signs of hollowing out in the middle, and are very thick overall, about three times the diameter of the part exposed above the sea surface.
This is understandable, just like building a building on the ground, it is narrower and wider from top to bottom.
To make sure his judgment was correct, Nick tried to pass through the stone surfaces. A moment later, he emerged from the other side of the stone pillar without reaching the space inside.
This attempt has allowed him to conclude that the underwater part of the tower is indeed solid and there is no place for people to enter.
However, to be on the safe side, Nick did not return immediately to bring back the result, but continued to float under the sea. The stone pillar was obviously rooted in the seabed, and there must be more than just this part hidden under the sea.
The deeper they went into the sea, the surface of the stone pillar was covered with more and more algae and underwater plants. Nick could not tell clearly by sight whether this place was the same as the part close to the sea surface.
He approached the algae, and through the exposed part of the stone surface covered by the algae, he could see that this part seemed to be no different from the part above.
Just as Nick was about to try to get some seaweed for further verification, he was startled by a sudden sound.
"Hey! You...are...a ghost?"
Nick looked back and found that the mermaid who was hunting on the other side had come to him at some point.
The one who spoke was a male mermaid, and his English sounded even less fluent than that of the female mermaid Justin had fished out before.
Next to this merman were his three companions, all holding steel forks in their hands. They didn't seem to any English at all, and they just chattered in the mermaid language that Nick couldn't understand.
"Have you just arrived...here? Why haven't I seen ..."
The English-speaking mermaid frowned and looked at Nick suspiciously.
After all, Nick had lived as a ghost for hundreds of years. He did not show any panic expression, but explained with a blink of his eyes.
"I am the ghost of the ship that visited Lord Stoker. Some of the students' belongings fell into the sea, so I came to see if I could help retrieve them."
His statement was reasonable. The mermaid did not become suspicious after hearing it. Instead, she spoke enthusiastically.
"You are the knight's guests... Do you need... our help? No one is more familiar with this sea area than us..."
Nick said, waving his hand.
"No, it's not that important. I just looked around and couldn't find it. It must have sunk to the bottom of the sea. It would be too troublesome to go to the bottom of the sea to look for it. Thank you for your kindness."
For Sir Stoke's sake, these mermaids were very friendly to Nick.
After a brief exchange with them, Nick did not stay any longer. In fact, he had already explored almost everything. There was nothing special about the part of the tower hidden under the sea.
After saying goodbye to these mermaids, he returned to the sea. The mermaids also left, and the area around the stone pillar returned to silence.
But this kind of silence did not last long, as a small school of fish swam past.
The water flow they created shook a patch of algae attached to the tower, and a small piece of necrotic algae was driven by the water flow and slowly fell off the stone pillar.
The area it originally covered , under the sunlight refracted by the sea, had a faint metallic luster...
…
Nick returned to the boat and told Lee about his experiences under the sea.
"I didn't find any problems with the underwater part of the tower, but it's too long. I only observed about 200 to 300 meters at most. I don't know what's going on further down. The bottom is also covered with algae. If someone really used the space inside, they would have cleaned it. I didn't find any signs of it being cleaned."
After getting the information from Nick, Lee quickly took it back and repeated it to Jon.
Jon was not disappointed about this. What Nick verified was only to help him eliminate a suspicious option and could not eliminate his doubts about the entire castle.
"Don't do anything else this afternoon. If you wander around the tower like you did this morning, it will make people suspicious. Just rest in the living room and wait for news from me at the top of the tower."
Around two o'clock in the afternoon, Sir Stoke found Jon again and went to the top of the tower with him to continue working on removing the magic of the runes on the stone slab.
In fact, although Jon needs to gradually absorb the magic power from the magic runes, his speed is not slow. In one morning, if he does not stop at all, he can completely eliminate a quarter of the magic power on the stone slab.
In other words, he could complete all the work in two days at the fastest, but he deliberately slowed down the process of absorbing magic power.
In order to completely ineffective the sealing magic on the stone slab, according to the principles of magic runes, there is no need for John to absorb all the magic power on it.
According to Nick's judgment, he only needs to eliminate more than half of the magic power of the runes on the stone slab to basically destroy the maintenance of the unlocking spell, so that he can successfully open the stone slab.
So Jon wanted to plan such a time difference. He was betting that Sir Stoke would not be able to stay with him like this all the time. After today, there would always be a time when he would be away.
Strictly speaking, the things hidden here should belong to Sir Stock, and he has no reason to ask for or check them.
