Volume 1: Student Life Chapter 291: Chen Zhou is missing?
Zhang Yitang’s method is essentially a screening method.
But a big problem with the sieve method is the so-called "parity problem".
Simply put, if all the numbers in a set have only an odd number of prime factors, then the traditional sieve method cannot effectively estimate how many elements the set has at least.
The set of prime numbers happens to be of this type.
To break the curse of the parity problem, appropriate new methods can be introduced into the traditional screening method to make up for the defects of the upper screening method.
Zhang Yitang’s starting point was the result of the work of “Goldston-Pintz-Yildirim” and “Bombieri-Friedlander-Iwaniec”.
They are about the distribution of prime numbers in bounded distance and arithmetic progression respectively.
This was the key to his solution.
Typically, many people use theorems like they use computers.
They think that if the theorem is correct, then great, they can just use it.
But what if it’s the result of being “not flexible enough”?
Like the work of the "Bombieri-Friedlander-Iwaniec" trio, because it was "not flexible enough".
This will require certain additional conditions for those who use the results of their work.
Because Zhang Yitang had deep experience and a deep understanding of the techniques, he was able to correct the work of the "Bombieri-Friedlander-Iwaniec" trio and overcome the threshold of "not flexible enough".
He improved the "Bombieri-Friedlander-Iwaniec" analysis technique for the distribution of prime numbers into a tool for studying any type of prime numbers.
This is a very complex form of finding prime numbers.
As the spacing between prime numbers increases, the gaps between prime pairs found by previous sieve methods become larger and larger because the inequality parameters they use to estimate are inaccurate.
The three people "Goldston-Pintz-Yildirim" had previously proved using the sieve method that there are infinite pairs of prime numbers.
The distance between them is always smaller than the average distance between consecutive prime numbers, but it is not certain what this distance is.
Zhang Yitang's research has partially succeeded in refining the selectivity of the screening method.
The theory that began in the 18th century was further developed by him.
Chen Zhou was so immersed in his thesis that he had forgotten to eat lunch.
All he could see now were mathematical formulas.
My mind is full of inspiration at that moment.
Dean Sun and others who are still at MIT have gotten together again. They originally planned to have dinner with Chen Zhou, but after looking around, they couldn't find Chen Zhou.
Dean Sun had no choice but to take out his cell phone and call Chen Zhou.
But what came from the phone was "Sorry, the number you dialed is turned off..."
Dean Sun couldn't help but feel strange. Where did this kid go?
Could it be that this person, who is in a foreign country, was kidnapped?
The United States is not as safe as the international community says.
Seeing Dean Sun frown and hang up the phone, Zheng Chengyu asked, "Dean, what's wrong?"
Dean Sun said: "The call didn't go through."
"Could it be that his phone is out of battery?" Zheng Chengyu suggested a possibility.
Dean Sun said sternly: "Let's look for it first..."
After saying that, he took the lead to look for Chen Zhou.
Zheng Chengyu and the others hurriedly caught up.
Soon, Zheng Chengyu and his team began to search separately.
Each person is responsible for a different area.
Only Zou Minwang still follows President Sun.
When Dean Sun saw Zou Minwang following him, he frowned immediately but didn't say anything.
After accompanying Dean Sun to find the auditorium for the morning lecture, Zou Minwang said, "Dean, don't worry. He's such a grown-up, he can't get lost, right? And the safety of the United States can be trusted."
Upon hearing this, Dean Sun directly exposed his thoughts and said in a stern tone: "Are you hoping that something bad will happen to him? Have you forgotten that a student of our Yanda University was killed in the United States?"
Zou Minwang didn't expect President Sun to be so angry, and he immediately shut up.
But he was still muttering in his heart: "I'm just telling the truth, and this kid doesn't follow the rules, so it won't be a bad thing if he really suffers a little."
Of course, although he thought so, he would not dare to say it out loud even if he was given ten times the courage.
He followed , looking here and there, as if he was looking for Chen Zhou.
Actually, Zou Minwang had no enmity with Chen Zhou, but he just didn't like Chen Zhou as a person.
A college student who has done so many special things at Yanda.
Moreover, as he said before, how should Yanda get along with such a genius?
After searching for a while, Dean Sun and Zheng Chengyu and others met again.
Several people shook their heads and found nothing.
In other words, Chen Zhou is not here at MIT.
"Dean, why don't we go back to the hotel and ask?" Zheng Chengyu suggested.
Dean Sun nodded and said, "Let's go back to the hotel first. If he is not there, let MIT know and ask them to help find him."
Just as President Sun and his colleagues were about to return to the hotel, Dr. James, who was in charge of the review, found them.
"Hi, Professor Sun." James greeted warmly.
If Professor Sun had not found him to discuss the email matter, he would have most likely missed out on this excellent paper by Chen Zhou.
That would be a great regret for him.
Seeing Dr. James, Dean Sun immediately asked, "Dr. James, have you seen Chen Zhou?"
James was stunned for a moment, then said, "Isn't Chen with you? I'm looking for him too. There are still some things I need to discuss with him about the report meeting the day after tomorrow."
Noticing that Dean Sun looked unhappy, James asked again, "What's wrong? Did something happen ?"
Dean Sun replied: "I'm afraid you can't find Chen Zhou for the time being. Chen Zhou is missing!"
Then, Dean Sun recounted the whole process of how Chen Zhou came to the venue with them, then separated, and couldn't be found.
James thought for a moment and said, "Don't worry, I'll go ask someone. You guys go back to the hotel first. Maybe Chen has already gone back."
After he finished speaking, James turned and left. He planned to find the staff in charge of the venue to find out the situation.
Dean Sun looked at James's departing back and said in a deep voice, "Let's go back to the hotel. Zheng Chengyu, you stay."
Zheng Chengyu was stunned, then nodded immediately and said, "Okay, Dean."
But he felt a little puzzled. Logically, shouldn't Zou Minwang stay and communicate with MIT at any time?
The hotel was arranged by MIT for this conference and is not far from the venue.
Although they did not drive to the venue like they did the day before, it was not far to walk back.
As soon as he arrived at the hotel, Dean Sun hurried to the front desk and asked the receptionist about the situation.
Only after he had found out the situation clearly did Dean Sun finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, I didn’t lose this kid!
If something goes wrong, the consequences will be serious!
It’s not that he doesn’t believe in the security of the United States, but after all, there are so many facts in front of him.
And no one can tell the probability of such an emergency.
After all, the safest place in the hearts of Chinese people is always in China!
