Volume 1: First Arrival Chapter 75: Abnormality Must Be a Demon
finally!
Looking at the apartment that was brand new inside and out, Nate's mood became bright and comfortable again. Then he opened a bottle of cold beer and drank it in one gulp.
However, the long night is not over yet. After sorting out my thoughts, it is time to work.
Standing in front of the open kitchen counter, Nate began to get busy.
Because the space in the apartment is limited, this workbench is fully utilized. It is both a dining table and a desk. The spacious desktop can hold a variety of documents and computers , and there is no problem working and cooking at the same time. It is comparable to a multi-functional office, maximizing space efficiency.
However.
No clue.
Previously, Nate thought that he was confused and restless, and couldn't think calmly, so he couldn't see the problem.
Now that the cleaning is over, everyone has calmed down and re-examined the entire case, but found that there are still no clues to the unanswered questions.
It's not just him—
He and the prosecutor have reviewed this issue over and over again, but still have not figured out the reason.
Nate suspected that they were too familiar with the case and had fallen into a fixed pattern. Being too familiar with the case, they were easily overlooked other key points. Perhaps they needed an outsider's point of view to break the routine and the pattern and create some different sparks.
Subconsciously, Nate looked up and saw Kirk.
Just then, Kirk took a cherry and put it into his mouth, a look of satisfaction revealed between his brows.
No no no no.
Nate shook his head repeatedly, denying his ridiculous idea. He lowered his eyes and forced himself to focus, but he couldn't help it after enduring it again and again.
The body is more honest than the brain.
Some words just come out of my mouth without me even knowing why.
"Tell me, if the evidence is overwhelming and irrefutable, but the suspect still refuses to plead guilty, what's the mentality behind this?"
Kirk didn't even raise his eyelids. "Isn't this a normal routine? If you refuse to plead guilty at the beginning, you should continue to refuse to plead guilty to the end."
Nate hesitated.
But before he knew it, Nate had stood up and taken a step towards the couch.
"But that's irrefutable evidence."
"I'm talking about DNA or fingerprints, and also surveillance video, surveillance video that records the entire crime process, which can be seen by anyone with eyes."
"As a result, the suspect refused to plead guilty. What happened?"
Then, Nate took another step closer to the sofa and continued to complain without waiting for Kirk's response.
"This isn't Mission Impossible. The real murderer is wearing a high-quality imitation human skin mask to impersonate the suspect in order to frame someone. We're not filming a movie. What on earth is she thinking?"
Kirk tilted his head slightly, raised his eyes and glanced at Nate, "Huh? There's actually surveillance video, that's rare."
Is this considered a complaint?
Nate glared at Kirk speechlessly.
Kirk raised his hands in a gesture of surrender, but because his elbows were supported on the sofa, the action of raising his hands was far from surrender. It was like a rag doll that couldn't stretch its arms, which was a bit funny.
“There are many types of surveillance video.”
"How is the clarity? How is the color? How is the recognition rate?"
"How do we confirm the authenticity of surveillance footage? It has not been edited or spliced? It has not been post-produced? Computer technology is now able to replace faces in surveillance footage. If it has not been confirmed by the technical department, these are all loopholes."
"Can you see his face from the front? Or his profile?"
"Does the suspect have twins or siblings? Also, do the DNA and fingerprints match? Does he have an alibi?"
"Even if there is surveillance video and no human skin mask is needed, there are still many possibilities to create a false impression."
There aren't many possibilities, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
Nate took another step closer to the sofa, and finally sat down next to Kirk, taking up most of Kirk's seat.
"That's the problem."
"The suspect was at the crime scene, the DNA and fingerprints matched, the time also matched, these facts have all been confirmed, and the suspect has also been confirmed."
"Everything fits in."
"Now, the surveillance video also proves this, but the suspect refuses to plead guilty."
"You should know that if the evidence is irrefutable and the suspect is willing to plead guilty, our prosecutors will choose to reduce the sentence because of the suspect's cooperation and confession of guilt, and we can even reduce the waiting period for probation for them."
"But if he keeps refusing to plead guilty, then under such circumstances, he will be sentenced at the upper limit of the sentence because of his heinous crimes and refusal to admit his mistakes and repent."
"The strangest thing about this is that the suspect still refuses to plead guilty. Neither I nor the prosecutor can see the causal relationship here."
interesting.
Kirk looked away from the TV screen and back at Nate.
"You mean, the suspect admitted that he was at the scene when the murder happened, and the surveillance video recorded the whole process, confirming the suspect's statement, and the DNA and fingerprints all matched, but the suspect denied that he committed the crime?"
Things are indeed not right.
Nat nodded in affirmation.
Kirk raised his eyebrows slightly, "So you felt something was wrong this morning too?"
Nate nodded again. "The evidence is complete, and the defense has almost no room for maneuver. In this case, even the defense lawyer suggested that the suspect plead guilty so that he could try to reduce the sentence. But the suspect still insisted that he did not kill anyone."
"I think there's something fishy going on."
"But others in the prosecutor's office thought that this case had no chance of turning around, so there was no need to think too much about it. We should just beat the suspect to death and recommend the maximum sentence."
Nate didn't continue talking here.
Looking at Nate who was hesitant to speak, Kirk smiled and said, "But your intuition doesn't think so."
Nate glanced at Kirk speechlessly, "Kirk, we shouldn't trust our intuition, we should trust the evidence."
Kirk raised his hands in surrender and was not prepared to continue arguing on this topic.
"Of course, whether it's the prosecutor or the police, we all need to believe in the evidence; but, Nate, evidence can be forged, evidence can lie, even what we see with our own eyes and experience with our own eyes may be an illusion."
"Otherwise, the evidence is irrefutable and OJ Simpson would not be at large."
"This world is not that simple. Although we all hope that things will be simpler, unfortunately, things are not as we wish."
“Trusting your intuition does not mean overturning the evidence.”
"We all know that a court ruling must be based on evidence. When I say trust your intuition, I actually mean that you should review the existing evidence again."
“If your instinct is sounding the alarm, you should trust it.”
"Your job includes not letting bad guys get away with it, and not letting good people suffer injustice."
The words were spoken slowly and leisurely.
Very rarely, Nate did not refute or interrupt, but just listened quietly.
In fact, Nate wanted to ask for help, but the words were on the tip of his tongue but he couldn't say them. Then, Kirk's voice with a lazy smile came to his ears.
"So, what's the whole story?"
