Volume 1 Chapter 48 "Floating Spell"

"Hogwarts was founded more than nine hundred years ago, and during this period, almost all children with the potential to become wizards were selected to enter the magic school before the age of 11. If a student comes entirely from a Muggle family, how much natural science knowledge can he learn at the age of 11, a student who has just graduated from elementary school?"
Neville couldn't answer Jon 's question. He didn't even understand what the word gravity meant, nor who Newton was.
"No matter how many there are, these students basically don't have access to high-level scientific knowledge. When they are accepted by Hogwarts and become little wizards learning magic , they will no longer want to understand the science of Muggles. It would be better for them to study more spells with their energy and time."
"Coupled with the constraints of the Statute of Secrecy and the discrimination against Muggles by traditional wizards, the wizarding world has never taken seriously the Muggles' own understanding of the world. They have never thought about the changes that magic has brought to the world, and what kind of deeper changes have taken place!"
Neville had an expression as if he was listening to something incomprehensible, and he looked at Jon blankly.
"what do you want to say in the end?"
Jon took a deep breath to calm down the excitement and agitation in his heart.
"When we use the levitation spell, we believe that the object can fly. But in fact, there are many ways to make an object fly. Magic chooses the simplest and most direct one, forming a force to lift the object up. But what if I specify a way to fly when I use the spell?"

"What other ways are there?" Neville became more and more confused. After all, for a child like him who had never received any modern scientific education since childhood, he could not understand the reason why objects always fell to the ground.
Jon didn't continue to explain to him, but solemnly grasped his wand and pointed the tip of the wand at the center of the dormitory.
The spell that had almost formed calluses in Neville's ears rang out again with incredible clarity.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
This levitation spell has no target, or rather, everything in this entire dormitory is John's target.
And at the moment the spell fell, Neville's eyes widened as wide as possible, looking at the magical scene in the room in great shock!
In the dormitory, except for the two living people, him and Jon, all the items, including parchment, quill pens, ink bottles, desks, chairs, and the two heaviest four-poster beds, floated in the air!
That floating state is significantly different from the effect produced by the normal levitation spell.
When a normal levitation spell takes effect, the object will obviously go straight up and down, and will stop when it reaches a certain height.
And now, these objects floating in front of Neville's eyes are all suspended in an irregular manner, like fish swimming in the water, completely unrestricted!
But this magical scene only lasted for less than two seconds, and then a series of "crackling" sounds of something falling continued to ring in their ears.
The effect of Jon's spell ended, and the flying objects fell back to the ground.
The originally clean and tidy dormitory instantly turned into a garbage dump, with tables and chairs scattered everywhere, two beds turned sideways on the ground, two ink bottles were broken, the ground was covered with large amounts of ink, and parchment was scattered all over the ground.
But neither Jon nor Neville cared about this. They just stared at each other. One of them had excitement in his eyes that his guess had been confirmed, while the other one had an incredulous look in his eyes as to why it suddenly became like this.
"how did you do it?"
Neville felt that this sentence sounded very familiar when he said it, as if he had asked the same question not long ago.
"Like I told you, the levitation spell is designed to make objects fly, not by using the power of magic to lift them up, but by controlling gravity."
John was not shy about telling Neville his discovery.
But now Neville didn't even understand what the word gravity meant, let alone understand it.
In fact, Jon also felt that there was little chance that he would succeed at the beginning. As one of the four basic forces in physics, he felt that this ultimate rule could not be changed so easily.

But in fact, magic itself is a kind of rule that breaks the rules. The normal levitation spell completely violates the common sense of physics, and it creates a force out of thin air to lift up the object.
Think about it from another perspective. Compared to creating new forces, changing the existing gravity might be easier for magic.
But John's mastery of this form of "Floating Spell" was obviously average, and he couldn't even maintain the effect for more than three seconds.
However, the most difficult things in the world are the process from 0 to 1. As long as he can use this spell successfully once, he will not be afraid of not being able to master it in the future.
After restraining his joy and cleaning up the dormitory with Neville, Jon left the dormitory directly.
He wanted to share this news with Slughorn. Even though the fat walrus probably had no way of understanding what gravity was, it did not stop him from passing on the good news.
He knocked on the office door, waited for a response from inside, and then pushed the door open and walked in.
The office was filled with smoke, and Slughorn was sitting over a cauldron brewing a potion.
He had just put a dried snake skin, like a belt, into the boiling potion when Jon walked in.
Jon blinked and became somewhat interested in the pot of potion.
"Teacher, what are you waiting for?"
"Hmm, a potion that is very beneficial to the health of the elderly. Even though I eat a lot of sweets, I also pay attention to my health. After all, no one wants to die in a hospital bed."
He told Jon the recipe as he stirred the potion with his wand.
"Powder from a unicorn's horn, a small piece of dragon's liver, and the tears of Dumbledore's pet bird. These three are the core ingredients. There are also secondary ingredients such as rune snake skin. Do you want some? Even if you are still young, it will be of great benefit to your growing body. However, this pot of potion takes a long time to brew, so you have to wait."
"Then I thank you in advance, teacher."
"Oh, by the way, why did you come to see me? Do you have any questions about magic?"
Slughorn stopped twirling his wand and looked up at Jon in confusion.
"Of course not, but I finally made a breakthrough in my levitation spell!"
That happy smile was still on his face, but there was something different in that smile from when he first came.
