Volume 1 Chapter 20 Sapphire Ring

"I just read a little more books in the library when I have nothing to do. If I really get started, I can't even use a spell now."
Jon lowered his head and took a sip of the warm black tea. He had just eaten at Hagrid's and had no intention of drinking anything now.
"Good theory is the basis for successful practice." Slughorn said as he poured himself a cup of tea. "I have never been wrong in seeing people. You will definitely have a bright future. If this were in peacetime, I would definitely invite you to join my club."
Of course Jon knew the club he was talking about. Those who could join it were indeed people who were either capable or had prominent family backgrounds.
Slughorn is obviously very good at building relationships with students. He always takes the initiative in socializing. This is not only due to his identity, but also his innate talent.
Jon just helped out and he didn't want to stay here any longer. After sitting down and drinking two sips of tea, he stood up and prepared to leave.
Slughorn did not try to persuade him to stay, but just let him take a few pieces of toffee and a box of pineapple preserves with him when he left.
After leaving the office and closing the door from the outside, Jon did not linger in the corridor. He was worried that if he did not go back, given Neville's personality, he would go to Professor to report his disappearance.
However, just as Jon took a step and was about to return to the dormitory, he suddenly felt a cold touch on the index finger of his right hand.
He was stunned for a moment, then raised his hand and saw a ring on his index finger that he had never had before!
It was a silver ring that looked very slim overall and was just the right size for Jon's finger. There was also a diamond-shaped blue gem in the middle of the ring.
The gem was very small, and it was not floating on the ring. Instead, it was directly wrapped in the ring. In front and behind the gem, surrounding the silver ring, four diamond-shaped gaps could be vaguely seen, as if the four gems should have been inlaid there as before.

Jon couldn't help but frowned deeply . He was sure that the ring was not his, and he had never seen such a thing before!
He tried to take the ring off his index finger and it came off easily.
The first thing that Jon thought of was that this was Slughorn's thing, because before entering his office, he didn't have this thing in his hand, but it suddenly appeared as soon as he walked out of the office door.
He just thought about it for a moment and immediately came up with a solution.
Regardless of whether this thing came from Slughorn to me, I must go back and give the ring to him.
Diaries, rings, lockets, opal necklaces and other things in the magical world, especially those of unknown origin, are mostly not good things. There are always some curses attached to them that are difficult for ordinary people to understand.
Jon had never imagined that there might be an old man hidden in the ring, saying that he was the chosen son of God. Compared with all those nonsense, it is safest to nip the possible danger in the bud!
So he turned around without hesitation and knocked on Slughorn's office door again.
"Come in."
Slughorn, who was stuffing a candied pineapple into his mouth, looked at Jon who came back in with some surprise and asked puzzledly.
"Anything else you want, kid?"
Jon took a deep breath and stretched out his right hand in front of him.
"Professor, when I was leaving your office, this suddenly appeared on my hand for some reason."
Seeing the ring lying quietly in Jon's hand, Slughorn was visibly stunned.
But he reacted quickly, and quickly threw the candied pineapple that he had not yet stuffed into his mouth back onto the desk. At the same time, he opened the drawer in front of him and took out a small wooden box.
He opened the small wooden box in front of Jon. It was empty inside, but it was obvious from the dents in the cushion that there should have been a ring lying there.
Slughorn's expression turned serious. He put away his usual smiling face which always appeared on everyone. His face became serious and even a little scary.
However, this seriousness did not last long. His brows relaxed again, but then quickly frowned again.

He didn't say anything, but stood up from the chair, pacing back and forth in front of Jon with his hands behind his back and a gloomy expression.
Jon didn't dare disturb him. Slughorn's reaction at least made him feel at ease. The ring originally belonged to the defense professor, but for some reason it fell into his hands after he went out.
Finally Slughorn stopped his irritating thoughts, stared at Jon, and held out his hand.
"Give me the ring."
Without any hesitation, Jon returned the ring to him.
After getting the ring, Slughorn did not let Jon leave, nor did he put it back into the wooden box immediately. Instead, he just stepped back towards him. After stepping back about three meters, a familiar cold feeling suddenly appeared on Jon's index finger again!
Jon looked at the ring that seemed to be attached to him with a look of astonishment. Compared to him, Slughorn's expression became calmer.
"Professor, this..."
"Just take it with you for now." Slughorn looked at the ring on Jon's hand and said softly, "Don't worry about anything else. It won't cause you any harm, but you can't get rid of it for the time being. Go back first, Jon. I'll find you again tomorrow after I figure out some things. I'll explain the matter of the ring to you then. Also, don't tell anyone about the ring during this period. Remember! No one!"
Jon was certainly not very reassured about such a result, but he couldn't force Slughorn to tell him what the ring was right now.
He could only ask.
"When can I come see you tomorrow, Professor?"
As if sensing his worry, Slughorn gave him a time.
"Let's finish lunch tomorrow. We should all be free then."
After getting an accurate time, Jon finally left.
He returned to the dormitory and saw Neville, who was in a hurry to go out. He was relieved when he saw Jon.
"Where have you been? I didn't see you at lunch, and I almost went to Professor McGonagall to tell her that you were missing."
"I went to help Professor Slughorn a little. Don't worry, I've already had lunch and brought back some dessert."
Jon acted as if nothing had happened and placed the candied pineapple and toffee on the table, but when he lay back on the bed, he quietly picked up the ring inlaid with a blue gem and stared into it in a daze.
