Volume 1 Beginning Chapter 29: That’s it?
Toru Amuro felt like he had lost the person.
After leaving the bar, Amuro Toru caught up with Nan Ling's leaving figure. However, he didn't dare to follow too closely, after all, he was a member with a code name, and he was afraid of being discovered.
Unexpectedly, I lost track of him as soon as the distance between us widened.
Chat's black outfit was not very conspicuous at night, and he moved very quickly. After chasing him for a few blocks, Toru Amuro realized that the target seemed to have disappeared from his sight.
I knew it wouldn't be that simple.
Amuro Toru sighed, turned around and started walking back, preparing to call it a night.
He still has time, and doesn't have to find out tonight—
—Wait. He felt something was wrong.
Today is a moonless night.
The streets were pitch black with only a few lights flickering. The dilapidated buildings with no one living in them stood silently, their dark windows looking like giant mouths ready to devour anyone.
There was no one on the street. The occasional breeze blew up the fallen newspapers on the ground, and the mottled wall that was about to fall off was crumbling.
This feeling of danger made even the air seem heavy.
"Hi, Bourbon."
A casual and familiar voice sounded lightly.
Amuro Toru was startled.
Chat.
Nan Ling leaned in the shadow of the alley and waved casually to Amuro Toru.
"Hello, it's been a while since we last met."
Amuro Toru was silent for a moment.
"Long time no see, Chat."
Chat hid in the dark with his arms folded, and Amuro Toru could only barely make out his blurry outline.
"I just heard yesterday that you were in Paris... Why didn't you come to visit me when you were in my place? I am very hospitable."
Amuro Toru narrowed his eyes. Was he testing him?
"I have a mission and need to keep it secret."
It's really watertight. Nan Ling chuckled. Anyway, he was sure that he was not familiar with the intelligence team, so he lied without hesitation.
"Ah... I understand. He's a mystic." Nan Ling's ending tone was drawn out, with a hint of teasing, "Gin has always hated people like you. I advise you to be careful and not to provoke him, otherwise... hehe, you will die without knowing why."
For a moment, Toru Amuro didn't understand whether this was a threat or not.
Although the tone was relaxed, just like two ordinary friends chatting casually on the street, the words he said were absolutely merciless.
"Do you know why Gin hates you?" Nan Ling suddenly asked.
"I'd like to hear more details," Amuro Toru replied calmly. The incident happened suddenly, and he could only remain unchanged in the face of all changes.
"People like you, who suddenly appear and disappear, and who knows what bad ideas you're planning in your mind, are out of control—"
Nan Ling suddenly lowered his voice, and there was a hint of ferocity in his tone.
"I hate it the most."
Amuro Toru secretly thought that something was wrong.
"So, Mr. Bourbon, who is out of my control, why did you follow me tonight? Could it be that..."
Nan Ling looked up and stared at Amuro Toru who was bathed in light. Although the light was very weak, it was enough to illuminate his expression.
Quite calm.
Nan Ling's evaluation of him rose a little.
But next... hehehe, let's see how strong his concentration is.
"You care a lot about Scotch whisky, don't you?" Nan Ling was satisfied to see that Amuro Toru's expression changed the moment he heard the name. So he continued to provoke:
"I can see that. Ha, your eyes were so scary that day. Are you looking for revenge on me? Just for a traitor?"
How dare he bring this up on his own initiative?
hateful!
Amuro Toru gritted his teeth secretly.
"What's wrong? Can't you help it? Do you want to take action?" Nan Ling walked out from the shadows, taking a step forward with each question.
He really wanted to kill him here - but no, Jingguang used his life to protect his identity, he must not let Jingguang's sacrifice go to waste!
"Look at you, Bourbon. How pathetic. As a member of the organization, you actually cherish the friendship with an undercover agent so much... Is that friendship ? I say, you haven't been deceived, have you?"
Nan Ling tilted his head and stood in front of Amuro Toru. The two were so close that their noses could almost touch.
At such a close distance, he could see every subtle expression of Toru Amuro.
Wow, the expression control is pretty good. At least Nan Ling didn't see any particularly obvious flaws.
Toru Amuro was trying hard to make his expression look more like anger after being inexplicably provoked, rather than anger after his companion was insulted.
There isn't much difference though.
Chat was very close to him, and his silver-gray eyes were filled with a malicious yet innocent smile, just like when they first met.
But on the contrary, when he heard Chat's question, Amuro Toru breathed a sigh of relief.
Chat probably hasn't suspected his undercover identity yet...
"what you mean?"
He tried to keep his voice calm.
Nan Ling stared at Amuro Toru's lake blue eyes.
"I've always been curious, Bourbon ."
The anger after being insulted, and the determination to not reveal one's identity.
Well, good, very interesting. He was even more looking forward to his next reaction.
Nan Ling then happily continued to ask:
"Do you want to be a traitor to the organization just for an undercover job?"
Nan Ling deliberately prolonged his voice and was satisfied to see that Amuro Toru's expression relaxed for the first time , as he had obviously foreseen what he was about to say.
So he lowered his voice and spoke, enunciating each word, as if the words he spoke weighed a thousand pounds.
"Or are you an undercover agent?"
silence.
The air seemed to be truly frozen at this moment.
Nan Ling opened his eyes wide, and tiptoed closer to Amuro Toru, as if trying to see through his heart through his eyes.
Amuro Toru didn't remain silent for long.
"...What are you talking about?" Nan Ling saw Amuro Toru frowning.
He could feel Amuro Toru's breathing, which was steady and calmer than he had expected.
"Are you questioning my loyalty to the organization, Chat?"
Bourbon, not Amuro Toru, smiled.
Nan Ling blinked at him innocently.
"I advise you to stop joking." Bourbon glanced at Nan Ling who was standing on tiptoe.
"I understand that children are curious, but you have to think before you speak. Some jokes..." He made a gun shape with his fingers, put his fingertips on Nan Ling's temple, and nodded threateningly, "You can't make them."
He specially emphasized the pronunciation of the word "little child".
Nan Ling almost laughed out loud.
What a crude provocation.
That's it? That's all you want to piss me off?
Disdain my height?
…Okay, you succeeded.
Nan Ling reluctantly admitted that his current height was indeed not as tall as Amuro Toru, who was 1.8 meters tall.
But I will grow back in the future! I will definitely grow back in the future!
Nan Ling silently ignored the fact that he hadn't grown much throughout the whole year, and became even more resentful of the organization's experiments.
Okay, you win this time.
...Why didn’t I realize that Amuro Toru had such a vicious tongue when I read the original novel?
Nan Ling took a few steps back, shrugged, and spoke again in his usual casual voice:
"Okay, it's just a joke. Bourbon, you really can't help but be amused. It's meaningless."
Nan Ling turned around and walked into the shadows with his back to the light.
"It's so late...Bye Bourbon. Bonne nuit (Good night)."
Amuro Toru breathed a sigh of relief.
I managed to get through this hurdle today.
Chat's sharpness far exceeded his expectations. This time his whereabouts have been discovered, and he can't stay in Western Europe any longer. He must be extra careful when he comes here next time.
In the end, I didn't get much out of this trip...
