Volume 1: A sound on Wall Street, Xinxiang City is busy copying books Chapter 68 Cthulhu
Chapter subtitle: The world of seafood, bugs and mollusks
There were horror novels before Cthulhu. In the 18th century, the Gothic novel, the forerunner of modern Western horror novels, appeared. In addition to the "Gothic castle" scenes that gave it its name, this type of novel also has the element of "surreal horror". The so-called "surreal horror" refers to the characters in the work being disturbed by some form of ghosts, spirits, monsters or "unknown things", and showing a high degree of anxiety of fear of death or madness.
Of course, in Seres we have the strange stories that correspond to the Gothic stories. The background worlds of the Eastern strange stories and the Western Gothic stories are "warm and affectionate". These two types of novels are like someone eating an apple and unfortunately biting a caterpillar. The apple (shi) is good, but there is a caterpillar (xie) factor. Whether it is praying to God or meeting a fairy master by chance, as long as the right method is found, the protagonist can still get rid of or even get rid of the caterpillar.
In contrast, the world of Cthulhu is much colder and darker, and can even be called desperate. The "apple" of Cthulhu itself is made up of "caterpillars", but ordinary people can't find it. The so-called "God" or "immortal master" is actually a kind of "caterpillar".
In other words, the world of Cthulhu itself is malicious towards humans, at least it will not favor us. There will not be a strict god in this kind of work, who will send down a flood to destroy the world because humans have angered him. The evil god of Cthulhu may flood the human world because he urinated and defecated everywhere; there will be no evil ghosts who deliberately harm the protagonist. The alien or prehistoric races in Cthulhu may be "kindly" reminding humans. But even if the protagonist understands their intentions, he can't do anything, and can only wait in despair for the evil god to inevitably come again.
“Fear no longer comes only from human beings themselves, or from the narrow myths of human beings...The real fear comes from outside the earth, from the vast universe, from the other side that no one can understand.”
Of course, this world view alone is not enough to make Cthulhu so influential. In addition, Cthulhu's evil gods and monsters are very "characteristic". This characteristic is "unspeakable". Even Ai Shouyi himself cannot use words to express their images, so he drew many illustrations by himself.
So how did I know him...
Yuan Yan suddenly stood up, opened the drawer, took out a newspaper and said, "Mr. Ai Shouyi, I found you through this newspaper."
If you buy a racist newspaper, you will know that the editor-in-chief is a horror novel author... Anyway, our Master Yuan will always have a way.
Mr. Ai Shouyi took it and saw that it was the book "Conservatives" which he had published. He couldn't help but murmur in his heart, this book is written for "conservatives", why is this Chinese joining in the fun?
Our Master Yuan took a sip of Wujiapi and smiled, "After I saw the editor's name on this newspaper, I suddenly remembered that I had read your novel published in The Vagrant magazine last year. What was the name of it..."
Upon hearing this, Master Ai Shouyi 's eyes lit up and he said, "Mr. Yuan, are you talking about Dagon?"
"Yes, yes, that's the name."
Dagon (translated as Dagon or Dagon) was originally the agricultural god of the ancient Semites, and his image was a man covered with fish skin. This god was worshipped by the early Amorites (ancient Babylonians) and was the chief of the gods of the Philistines. However, because of this, Dagon was regarded as a devil by the ancient Israelites who were once "captives of Babylon" and were also the old enemies of the Philistines.
In the Cthulhu mythology system, it and the female Mother Hydra exist as servants of the Old One Cthulhu. They are the leaders, father gods, and mother gods of the Deep Ones.
In the Dungeons & Dragons system of DND, which is also a desktop RPG, Dagon is a powerful demon, one of the ancient demon lords, and the lord of the 89th layer of the Abyss. He is also known as the King of the Deep Sea, the Shadow of the Ocean, and the Lord of the Ocean and Sea Monsters. He rules over the creatures living under the dark deep sea.
In video games, Dagon is a familiar figure. To name two examples, it is the boss at the end of The Elder Scrolls 4 and the origin of the name of the red staff (Dagon's power) in DOTA.
Dagon is the first Cthulhu-style work. From then on, Master Aishouyi began his writing career dealing with all kinds of seafood and mollusks. The Jerusalem Territory, written by Yuan Yanshu, should be the second Cthulhu novel in this world. Our Master Yuan let go of seafood but had a hard time with insects.
This novel by Ai Shouyi is about an American sailor who was captured by the Germans in the early days of World War I and stole a lifeboat to escape alone. He drifted into a black swamp, saw the stone sculptures built by the Deep Ones, and then saw a huge creature that looked like Dagon...
Although he was rescued from the sea, the crew member still suffered from hallucinations in a mental hospital in San Francisco.
Of course, like the protagonists of most Cthulhu novels, the protagonist's SAN value eventually returns to zero.
SAN is the sanity value, which literally means mental strength. It is the most important value for Cthulhu Mythos tabletop game players, equivalent to HP in other games. Once the SAN value reaches zero, it means that the character's worldview is completely destroyed and he will die.
"Rescue is at hand. There is a sound at the door, like some great, greasy body moving slowly. It will not find me. God, the hand! The window! The window..."
Yuan Yanshu's "Jerusalem Territory" tells the story of a gentleman who received his cousin's inheritance and moved back to his ancestral home in 1850. He found a strange town called "Missionary Corner" near the ancestral home, and not far from the town was an abandoned village called "Jerusalem Territory". He found an evil book written in Latin and Druids in the village church, called "The Secret of the Worm".
After some investigation, he was surprised to learn that his grandfather was the cult leader of the Jerusalem Territory, who turned it into a demonic abode through evil blasphemous rituals. Through the Secret of the Worm and the summoning of the protagonist's bloodline, his grandfather will be resurrected again.
Although the protagonist tried hard to stop his grandfather's evil intentions, like the protagonists of most Cthulhu novels, his SAN value eventually dropped to zero and he committed suicide.
"...I am a channel, I am the last blood of the Boone family. For the good of all mankind, I must die... to completely sever that connection, forever.
I am heading for the sea now, Burns. My journey, like my story, is coming to an end. May God bless you and give you peace.
Yours, Charles.
