The second volume is full of glory and splendor in the capital, and the spirit is full of vitality in the foggy city. Chapter 244: Gold Standard (Part 2)

Subtitle of this chapter: Does being an economist mean you don’t need to worship the temple?
For the Seres, the most noteworthy event in May 1921 was that teachers from eight public schools in the imperial capital united to demand... wages from the Beiyang government!
These eight schools are Beijing Normal University (the predecessor of Beijing Normal University), Beijing Women's Normal University, Law, Medicine, Industry, Agriculture, and Fine Arts. The other one is... Peking University!
In fact, starting in 1919, teachers in public schools in the capital and civil servants in the Ministry of Education had often been in arrears of salary, which resulted in Mr. Lu Xun, who later became as famous as Mr. Hongjian, often having to take out campus loans.
In 1920, civil servants from the Ministry of Education began to organize a "wage-demand group" and went to sit-in demonstrations in front of the Finance Department.
On April 8, 1921, the faculty and staff of the eight schools resigned in protest of the Beiyang government's withholding of educational funds, and sent a telegram to the entire nation. The Beiyang government had no choice but to promise to allocate funds as soon as possible.
On May 16, 1921, the faculty and staff of the eight schools resigned again because the government issued a blank check and failed to fulfill its promise from the previous month .
On June 3, 1921, teachers and students from eight universities and 15 schools and colleges jointly went to the Presidential Palace to petition. They were brutally beaten by the Presidential Palace guards at Xinhua Gate, injuring more than ten people with rifle butts and bayonets. This incident is known in history as the "June 3 (Wage Demand) Massacre," also known as the "Xinhua Gate Incident."
Fortunately, these two words are just a little bit worse than those two sensitive words.
That's why it's said that comparing yourself to others will make you feel thief angry. Compared with the first person in the Republic of China to demand armed wages, these guys are really losers; compared with our Master Yuan, these guys are really losers.
Wednesday, May 18, 1921, at 2:00 p.m.
As a life-winner, Yuan Yanshu naturally didn't care about what had happened in the imperial capital of Seris in May. He was concerned about what would happen in the magic city of Seris in July...
"Pika Pika."
"Neo, we're here."
Master Yuan nodded to express his gratitude to Professor Julian Chandler who reminded him, and then looked out the car window at their destination - Columbia University.
In fact, Columbia University is also on Manhattan Island in New York. The English name of Columbia University is Columbia University in the City of New York, which literally means Columbia University in New York.
This is to distinguish it from other "Columbia Universities". For example, there is a University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada.
In fact, "Columbia", which comes from Columbus, was originally a nickname for America.
However, unlike NYU, Columbia University is located in the bustling center of the Peninsula, but in the more "remote" Morningside Heights in the Upper West Side.
Student Yuan Hongjian began to blame his great-great-uncle in his heart. He came to the United States to study, and it was already embarrassing if he didn't go to Harvard or Yale. How come he couldn't even get into Columbia University?
Famous Chinese alumni of Columbia University include Tang Shaoyi, Gu Weijun, Hu Shi, Song Ziwen, Ma Yinchu, Feng Youlan, Jiang Menglin, Tao Xingzhi, Jin Yuelin...
By the way, there is also Xu Zhimo who fell in love with April like Jin Yuelin.
By the way, in the original version, Yuan Yanshu and Jin Yuelin had met each other, because he was studying for a PhD in political science at Columbia University in 1920. However, when the current version came through, Jin Yuelin had already gone to the UK.
These people are so well-known that you don’t even need to search on Baidu. They are so cool!
My famous Chinese alumnus of NYU is Ma Ying-jeou... Apart from being handsome, he is also depressing, so it's better not to talk about him.
Invisibly, this has lowered your own status by several points.
This won’t do. I must find a way to get fifty or sixty... no, three-digit honorary doctorates like Hu Shi.
Just when Master Yuan made up his mind to use the "Hundred Warriors Killing" strategy, the car carrying him and Professor Chandler arrived at the bar next to Columbia University.
Oh, and Prohibition was in effect, so these bars became men's clubs.
The American Economic Association (AEA), which sounds so impressive, is actually still a club spontaneously organized by American economists at this point in time.
The origins of the AEA can be traced back to 1885, when a group of radical young economists from the German Historical School established an . Its influence grew, and more and more economists joined.
In 1894, John Bates Clark, mentioned above, became the president of AEA. Thanks to his efforts, the fraternity transformed into an academic organization, and by 1900 it had truly become an informal academic organization.
After 1921, the American Economic Association had not yet registered with the official authorities to become a legal organization. It was not until two years later, in 1923, that it was officially established.
So when our Master Yuan walked into this men's club, he was somewhat disappointed to find that it was just a bunch of men smoking all kinds of tobacco, drinking... tea, and chatting about everything.
"Professor Chandler, welcome."
Seeing someone coming in, a tall man in his sixties stood up from the seat near the door. He had a long face, a big nose, and spiky white hair. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, looking very intellectual.
"Professor Davenport, it's nice to see you again."
The two smiled, shook hands, and hugged each other. Then Mr. Chandler pointed at Yuan Yan and said, "Let me introduce you. This is my student, Dr. Neo Yuan."
"And this is Professor Herbert J Davenport (1861-1931), the current president of the AEA, and now a professor in the Department of Economics at Cornell University."
The president of AEA is basically changed every one to two years, and Professor Davenport was indeed the president in 1921 according to the original date.
The current president of AEA looked at Master Yuan with admiration ... This was not because there was something wrong with his sexual orientation, but because this guy was also a member of the Austrian School.
Professor Davenport politely extended his hand and said, "Dr. Yuan, it's nice to meet you. I've read your book 'Socialism'; it's quite well written."
"Thank you. I appreciate the compliment……"
Okay, since you said that, I will help you when the Great Depression comes.
That’s right, Professor Davenport was badly hurt by the Great Depression, just like Irving Fisher.
Oh, it is really embarrassing for us economists and the Austrian School to say this.
Yuan Yan suddenly stepped forward and shook the other person's hand . "Professor Davenport, it's an honor to meet you. I've also read your books 'Enterprise Economics,' 'Capitalism and Market Value,' and 'Value and Distribution.'"
He immediately rattled off a bunch of dish names… well, book titles, prompting someone to interrupt, “Dr. Yuan, excuse me, but have you read all of my works?”
"Yes, I have. I really have read it all."
Our Master Yuan blinked his eyes and said with an extremely sincere expression, "Professor Davenport, and I even memorized all those wonderful passages of yours!"
