Part 1
One day, a male student from Xijing Normal University woke up early, left the house, and headed for an internet cafe.
Online games were incredibly alluring, and leveling up was crucial, incredibly important.
Five minutes later, the boy was standing at the entrance. The cafe was located in a semi-basement facing the street, with a bathhouse above.
The shutters were tightly closed, giving the appearance of being closed, but the boy knew full well it was a disguise.
Government policy prohibited internet cafes in the city from operating after midnight, but there was a countermeasure. At midnight, all internet cafes would lower their shutters and thick curtains, completely enveloping the lights, the noise, and the dozens of red-eyed, all-night surfers. From the outside, there was no sign of anything.
The boy raised his hand and knocked on the door, and the aluminum shutter made an exaggerated sound
. Unlike usual, no one opened the door for him, so the boy increased his force. Bang, bang ...
The boy uttered a huff, stepped back, and reexamined the internet cafe's facade. Doubts welled up in his mind: Is it closing today? But when he left last night, the place was bustling with activity. Normally, there would be at least 20 people booked for the night.
He approached again, this time with the force of a drum. The shutter slammed with a ferocious bang.
Still, nothing happened.
The boy, enraged, cursed angrily, and turned away.
That day, the internet cafe's shutter remained closed from morning to night. After dark, the boy returned, only to be disappointed. He kicked the shutter and prepared to leave, but just then, something strange happened. A burst of singing erupted from inside the door. The voice was so close, so clear, he could tell it was right behind the door. The boy jumped and hurriedly took two steps back, but the singing continued, its melodious melody still ringing:
"Sweet Honey, your smile is so sweet, like flowers blooming in the spring breeze. Where, where have I seen you before..."
The male voice was Leon Lai, and the female voice was Faye Wong. It was the love song "Sweet Honey," a collaboration between these two superstars. Surely Leon Lai and Faye Wong wouldn't condescend to be here. Judging by the sound, it must be a cell phone ringtone.
The boy's face paled
instantly, a wave of fear washing over him like a rising tide. The ringing phone indicated that someone was standing inside the door, separated only by the shutter.
Perhaps, that person was crouching against the door, staring at him unblinking through a small hole.
The boy turned and ran, not slowing down until he had crossed a block, his pace clacking. His fear receded, his mind clearing. As he walked, he thought: Maybe someone in the internet cafe heard him kicking the door and was lying there listening. That was understandable, nothing to be afraid of.
But if there were people inside, why didn't they open the door? And they didn't say a word. What the heck was going on?
Curiosity piqued, the boy turned and headed back, this time around the side of the internet cafe. He knew the place well. He knew the only small window, near the ground level.
The window was only the size of two magazines and very low. The boy simply dropped to the ground and pressed his eyes to the glass to peer inside.
The window was covered with blood-red velvet curtains, but they were not drawn tightly, letting in a thin ray of light.
The boy blinked, peering through the gap in the curtains. When he finally saw the scene inside, his heart felt like it was being hammered down.
In the dim light, he saw a room full of dead bodies. Fate had struck Lin Zhao as a freshman.
