Chapter 7 Darkness Swallows Dawn 03
The New Year always passes extra quickly when you have someone to accompany you. After more than ten days, it was time to report back to school.
On the first day back at school, Ning Qiyuan forced me to pack my things and move to his apartment, saying that I was his fiancée. I was not as strong as him, nor was I as domineering as him, but luckily there was a room in Ning Qiyuan's apartment that I could stay in.
It was the beginning of the new semester, and there were many things to do at school. Even though Ning Qiyuan and I lived together, we didn't have much time to see each other. In addition to attending classes at school, he often had to help Uncle Dong deal with things in the company. Many times he was busy until the early hours of the morning before returning. When he came back, he didn't go to sleep in his room. He crawled into my bed with a cold breath all over his body, and then hugged me to sleep.
I felt sorry for him because he was so tired and exhausted from going out early and coming back late every day, and I couldn't bear to kick him out of bed. After a while, Ning Qiyuan got into the habit and treated my room as his room. He even hung his clothes directly in my closet.
Although we can't always be together, this period of time is the most peaceful and happiest time I have ever had. If possible, I even hope that we can live like this for a long time in the future. Every morning when we open our eyes, we can see each other, and every night before going to bed, the last person we see is each other. And I also thought that we would continue like this.
It's Friday again, and Ning Qiyuan has no classes all day. After having breakfast with me in the school cafeteria, he left for Uncle Dong's company, while I had to face a full day of classes.
What I didn’t expect was that the professor who was supposed to teach the first class in the afternoon had something urgent to do and adjusted the class time to the next afternoon, and the second class was not until 4 o’clock.
During this time, I returned to my apartment and washed the dirty clothes that I had left there. Seeing that there was still more than an hour before class, I ran back to my room, set the alarm and went to rest.
I don’t know how long I slept, but in a daze, I heard the footsteps of someone opening the door.
Ning Qiyuan?
It's impossible, he has never come back so early, however, the familiar voice made me sure it was him.
"Shu Chen is not in class today." It was Ning Qiyuan.
Besides Ning Qiyuan, who is the other person?
I opened my eyes and gradually became more conscious. Just as I was about to get out of bed and go out to take a look, I heard the voice of Ning's mother.
"Qiyuan, you haven't told her yet?"
Tell me? What?
I sat on the edge of the bed and suddenly had a very bad premonition in my heart. I urgently wanted to know what Ning Qiyuan and Ning's mother were talking about, and why Ning's mother said that?
"I don't intend to let her know about this." Ning Qiyuan's voice was indescribably low. "You don't have to tell her. Then don't tell her."
"But Shuchen can't completely stay out of it. What's more, you planned to return to China and start investigating the real cause of your father's death after reading her father's diary." Mother Ning sighed.
I listened to the words that Ning's mother said, and suddenly cold sweat broke out in my palms.
He saw it!
He actually saw it!
That night, after I saw my father's diary, I hid it and didn't intend to let Ning Qiyuan know. Those were just some speculations of my father and there was no evidence at all. I didn't expect that Ning Qiyuan would find the diary and even return to China to re-investigate those speculations.
I always thought he came back for me, but he saw everything but said nothing, as if nothing had happened...
Thinking of this, my whole body began to tremble, his voice was still in my ears -
"Now things are almost over. It's almost over. Those who killed my father will pay the price , so there's no need to let her know. Besides, she will be better off in the future if she doesn't know about these things."
No need for me to know...
I would be better off not knowing these things...
What does he take me for?
I didn’t want to listen to what Ning’s mother and Ning Qiyuan said next.
I don’t know how long it was before I heard Ning’s mother’s voice again. Maybe she had passed away. At this moment, the alarm I had set on my mobile phone rang on time, and the sound of the spring water was clear and pleasant.
Ning Qiyuan who was outside the room seemed to have heard it. He came over quickly and opened the door of my room. Then, I saw him with a look of surprise on his face.
Ning Qiyuan was stunned for a few seconds, his expression a little unnatural, and he said in a dry voice: "You didn't go to class?"
"The professor had something urgent to do, so the class has been rescheduled to tomorrow." I looked into his eyes, got out of bed and walked towards him. "I heard everything you said just now."
Ning Qiyuan didn't move.
I asked him, "When did you secretly read my father's diary?"
"That's not important." Ning Qiyuan softened his voice and pressed my shoulders, "Shuchen, that's none of your business ."
"Did you decide to return home because you wanted to investigate your father's death?" I ignored him and continued to ask him questions.
Ning Qiyuan looked at me with dark eyes. He answered me without thinking, "It's also for you." His tone was firm.
My heart was suddenly hit by something, and I had an indescribable feeling, like pain and warmth.
But when I think about the fact that we have been together for such a long time, and he has been investigating silently behind my back, looking for the truth that may not even exist, I feel that I am being kept in the dark, not needed, and not trusted.
"Why is it none of my business? Why didn't you tell me a word?" I questioned him, my voice rising uncontrollably.
"Tong Shuchen." Ning Qiyuan's face darkened. "I'm doing this for your own good."
"You're not telling me anything for my own good? Such an important matter, and it involves my dad..." But before I could finish my words, Ning Qiyuan interrupted me, his voice suddenly became a little cold: "What about you, Tong Shuchen."
I was shocked and stared at him blankly, feeling inexplicably panicked.
"You hid the diary and didn't let me see it or know about it. Why?" Ning Qiyuan looked straight into my eyes, and there seemed to be anger hidden in those bottomless pupils.
"Because those are just my father's guesses. I didn't tell you because I don't want these things to affect your current life!" I answered without hesitation.
"So you took it upon yourself to hide all this from me?" Ning Qiyuan chuckled, but with a chill in his voice, "Don't you think you are being selfish?"
"I……"
"If someone told you today that your father's death was not an accident, what would you do?" Ning Qiyuan questioned me, "Would you pretend you didn't know, or would you try every possible means to find out the truth and find out who killed him?"
I looked at him, unable to utter a word, and my heart was in a mess.
I never thought about it so much. I just don't want him to do something that hurts people around him because of a random guess, like he did two years ago.
Is this also wrong?
"What's more, the person who said such things was your father?" Ning Qiyuan took a deep breath, seemed to calm down, and reminded me, "You should go to class. Don't worry about my business."
I looked at his slightly cold eyes, remained silent, and finally left the apartment holding my book.
This was the first time I had an argument with him since we got together.
I suddenly felt abandoned, as if I had been isolated in another world by him and there was no way I could get close to him.
"What about you, Tong Shuchen."
"Don't you think you 're being selfish?"
"Don't mind my business."
…
I walked in a daze, his words constantly echoing in my mind. I felt extremely aggrieved and finally I couldn't help but squat down and burst into tears.
