Chapter 5: The Mountain Has Trees and You Have Interests Yu Nansheng02
There was no one in the newspaper office. Night had fallen outside. I wrapped my coat tightly and felt extremely cold.
Shen Yuxi seemed to have noticed and turned on the air conditioner as soon as she entered the newspaper office. I whispered, "No need to turn on the air conditioner. It's just the two of us. It's a waste."
"I'm cold," he replied.
He rummaged through boxes and drawers to find the ointment, returned to the office and sat down next to me, took my scraped hand and began to apply the ointment on my wrist. The ointment was cool and it did make me feel better. I looked at his focused expression and lost my mind again.
"When you go out for interviews, didn't your teacher teach you to pay attention to your personal safety?" Shen Yuxi asked with a cold face.
I nodded, and thinking of what happened just now, I felt scared: "I taught you."
" Then why were you just sitting there motionless when you were almost chopped down just now?"
"Wasn't I protecting the camera just now? The camera is there as long as the person is there. Didn't your teacher say that?" I replied righteously.
"I 've never seen such a teacher at S University."
Although she always spoke with disdain in her tone, I saw a sudden smile on Shen Yuxi's lips. What was going on?
"Weren't there policemen around at the time? If he had chopped me in front of the police, that would have been intentional injury and he would have gone to jail." I felt more at ease because there were policemen around at the time.
"People with mental illness do not need to bear legal responsibility. Didn't your teacher teach you that?" Shen Yuxi asked again.
Mental illness?
"The man was just a little too extreme. It should be an emotional problem. He's not really mentally ill, right?" Only then did I realize it, started to get scared, and stared at him.
Shen Yuxi said unhappily: "Most likely."
No way……
He sighed, applied the ointment, put it back in the box, glanced at the camera on my desk, and said, "Go back and rest for a few days. I'll write this report."
I immediately shook my head: "I don't need to rest."
He frowned. "I told you to rest, so you should rest. How can you go to work in this state? Don't worry, I will talk to Sister Lin."
He said don't worry, but I became even more worried.
I lost the topic selection competition before, and I was afraid that he would look down on me, so I wanted to produce news independently. Unexpectedly, something like this happened again. Not only did I need him to save me, but my camera was also broken. Will Shen Yuxi be even more disappointed in me?
I sat up straight, tapped the camera with my uninjured hand, and said, "It's okay! I'm really fine! Such a small thing can't affect me. At most, I'll just need a good night's sleep tonight. Master, you don't have to worry about me. But my wrist is injured, so I can't work overtime tonight, so I'll go home first. Goodbye, Master!" After saying that, I quickly ran out of the office, afraid that Shen Yuxi would speak to me in a harsh tone. If that happened, I would feel even more useless.
When I got home, Mom and Dad were already asleep. I tiptoed back to my room, and when I walked through the living room, the lights suddenly came on.
"Close your eyes." Dad's voice rang out.
I closed my eyes subconsciously, and when I opened them again, my father was standing in front of me, wearing pajamas and holding milk , as if he had been waiting for me for a long time.
"Dad, why aren't you asleep yet?"
I glanced at the clock on the wall and it was already past 10 o'clock.
When I came back just now, I was lucky enough to catch the last bus. There were not many pedestrians and vehicles on the road.
Dad sighed, "How can I sleep if you haven't come back yet? Come, have a glass of milk and go upstairs to sleep."
When I reached out to grab the milk, my father noticed the wound on my wrist and quickly pulled me to sit down: "How did you get it? Why is it so red?"
"It's okay. I was pushed by someone and rubbed against the wall when I went out for an interview this afternoon. You see, it's just a little skin break. My colleague was afraid that I would feel pain, so he applied medicine for me." I said it lightly, not wanting to let my father know that I would encounter danger when I went for the interview.
My father didn't want me to study journalism or work in a newspaper. He thought a girl shouldn't run around outside all the time. He would rather I do some simple work and sit in the office. But becoming a journalist was my dream, and he didn't want to discourage me. When I said I wanted to go for an internship, he still helped me to say hello to the editor-in-chief.
But deep down he still doesn't like this job.
Daddy blew my wrist with a distressed look. I didn't feel wronged at first, but when I saw him like this, tears were about to fall. Fortunately, Daddy didn't see it. I raised my head and blinked, forced back the tears, and reached out to hug Daddy.
"Okay, Dad, I'm fine now. This little injury will heal tomorrow. Dad, go to bed early. I have to go to the newspaper office early tomorrow morning. Good night."
After saying that, I took the milk back to the room.
Just as I expected, I had a sleepless night.
When I arrived at the newspaper office with dark circles under my eyes, Qi Qi, who usually came in at this time, had already sat down at her seat and started working. She was a little surprised to see me.
"I came but didn't see you. I thought you were taking a day off today! Why did you come at this time?" Qi Qi asked me warmly, not knowing that something went wrong with my interview yesterday.
I yawned.
"I came back home very late from the interview yesterday. It was already past 8 o'clock when I woke up. I was scared to death!"
Fortunately, there is no need to punch in when going to work at the newspaper office. After all, everyone has to go out all the time, and you may not see anyone all day long.
I waved my hand and handed her a cup of Starbucks coffee which I bought on the way.
"Has the manuscript of my interview yesterday come out?" I was standing in the tea room eating bread. Qi Qi's seat was not far away, and she could just hear the volume.
Hearing this, she turned her head to look at me in surprise and said, "Didn't you hand in the manuscript?"
I sighed and replied, "It wasn't written by me, it was written by my master."
In order to shut up Qi Qi's gossiping mouth, I then explained to her what happened yesterday.
After hearing my story, Qi Qi was so shocked that her mouth opened wide. It took her a while to find her voice and she said to me, "No wonder I heard the people in the technical department cursing in the morning, saying that another camera was broken. I heard that it fell quite hard this time. Are you okay? Come out with a kitchen knife in your hand! It's so scary!" She patted her chest, as if she was the one being threatened with a kitchen knife.
My reactions have been a little slow since I came back yesterday. I don’t know if it’s because I was scared or what.
Now she checked my wrist, and actually there was nothing wrong with it. It was because I was pushed down yesterday and hit the ground without any defense that a large red area appeared. It just looked scary, and the redness and swelling have almost gone away.
"What medicine did your master give you?" Qi Qi asked.
I nodded.
Qi Qi sighed and said, "Hey, you are so lucky! With a position like mine, even if I were hacked to death outside, I guess no one would come to save me! A hero saving a beautiful girl, what a dream! By the way, didn't you feel your heart beating like a deer at that time?"
I blinked, thought for a moment, and then said, "No, the situation wasn't that dangerous yesterday. Even if my master hadn't arrived, there were still police. But my master and the police suspected that the man was a mental patient. I was scared only after I got back to the newspaper office. If the police hadn't stopped me, I would have just sat there. I guess you would have to go to the hospital to see me now."
She curled her lips.
"I'm really not saying anything bad about you, but were you this slow to react when you were a kid? It's not good to be in a daze all the time. I can't believe you're a student at S University."
I nodded and said, "Yeah, I often daydream in class. The teacher always calls the roll, but I've never been out of the top three in exams!"
She sighed again, "Academic masters are different! They can always be in a daze and still be among the top three in the grade. After I entered university, I rested when others rested, and I rested when others studied. I just hoped not to fail the exams!"
After this internship, whether Qi Qi can stay in the newspaper actually depends on her final grades in the college. After she learned this, she worked overtime every day at the newspaper to review her lessons.
"I feel that if I don't die suddenly at this rate, I will be unworthy of my salary as an intern."
I rolled my eyes and said calmly, "Don't worry, you will either die of sudden death or die of obesity."
After saying that, I walked towards the office.
Shen Yuxi is not here.
"Nan Sheng, get ready! The editor-in-chief has given us the quota!"
"Okay, wait till I change my clothes."
Although I could complete most of the tasks assigned by the editor-in-chief by myself, Shen Yuxi saw that I was familiar with Qi Qi, so she put me and her in the same group. Occasionally, Shen Yuxi took the two of us out together, and Qi Qi always said that it was because of me that she was so favored by the reporter Shen, and she was very busy every day.
"Where is my master?" I asked Qi Qi in the taxi.
She asked me back as if she had seen a ghost: "Please, that's your master, not mine. You don't even know where he went, so how would I know?"
I nodded silently.
When we arrived at the destination, Shen Yuxi was already there.
"Are you here?" he said lightly, and I didn't know whether he was greeting me or Qi Qi.
Seeing Qi Qi's surprised look, I nodded belatedly and said, "Yeah."
Shen Yuxi rarely communicated with others during the interview. I can understand Qi Qi's surprise. At the beginning, when it was just him and I covering the news, I couldn't speak to him more than three sentences a day. If I did, it would definitely be about work.
Qi Qi and I were getting ready, and out of the corner of my eye I saw Shen Yuxi sizing me up. Although I was still frightened by what happened last time, I tried my best to act comfortable.
But……
"Nan Sheng, Nan Sheng! What are you daydreaming about? They're taking pictures!" Qi Qi slapped me hard. I came to my senses and looked at her blankly.
Qi Qi said angrily to me and asked me to take the photo quickly.
"Feel sorry."
I said sorry and quickly found an angle to start taking pictures.
"You might as well not come in this state." Shen Yuxi said calmly.
I looked at his profile and finally stopped being dazed. I also discovered my own problem. Today, when I looked at the interviewees, even if they were just children, I was unable to speak. Originally, Qi Qi was responsible for taking pictures and I was responsible for the interviews, but now she interviews and I take pictures.
This was the first time I saw Qi Qi doing an interview. Although we were both interns, our internship focuses were different. She was mainly responsible for clerical work.
"I may not be fully awake yet. I will be fine soon. Master, you can go back once you are done."
I really don't want Shen Yuxi to look at me like this, it will make me feel frustrated. I feel that Shen Yuxi despises me. I have tried my best to prevent Shen Yuxi from thinking that I am useless. Now, I can't even open my mouth. What should I do?
"You're not fit to do an interview right now."
Shen Yuxi wanted to take the camera from my hand, but I stepped back and said, "Master, you can go back to the newspaper office first. Qi Qi and I will be fine here."
I lowered my head so that Shen Yuxi wouldn't see my expression.
He stood there for a long time, and finally took a step forward.
I turned around and realized he was still standing on the other side of the road observing the two of us, so I started taking pictures from various angles.
Qi Qi looked at me with confusion. The photos had just been taken, so what was he doing now?
"Take more photos, more options," I explained.
She nodded and said nothing more.
At noon, the two of us found a cafe and had a simple lunch, not planning to go back.
Shen Yuxi had other news to report, so she left in a hurry. Before leaving, she sent me away and talked to Qi Qi alone for a few words.
"There is another person I need to interview nearby this afternoon. I went back to the newspaper office because I was mentally ill. It will take more than an hour to go back and forth! I'd better finish the interview early and go back to write the article so that I can get off work early today!" Qi Qi said after taking a sip of coffee.
I lowered my head to look at the photos, and the more I looked, the tighter my brows furrowed.
Qi Qi put down the cup and asked, "What's wrong?"
I sighed and handed her the camera: "Only more than ten of the fifty photos are usable. The lighting was not adjusted well."
Qi Qi took it and took a look, and also frowned. She put down the camera, was silent for a long time, and said to me with a slightly serious expression: "Nan Sheng, when your master left, he told me that if you are not in good condition, he will let you go home and let other reporters come to replace you."
It seems that she also noticed that something was wrong with me.
I lowered my head and thought for a while, then said, "It's okay. I feel much better now. I should be fine in the afternoon. You come and visit, and I'll take the photos."
She bit into a waffle, thought for a moment, and said, "That's fine, but if you really can't hold on any longer, just tell me and go home quickly."
"Okay, got it." After lunch, we went straight to the next interview point.
But in fact, I overestimated myself.
