Chapter 5 My Savior 2
In the hospital.
"Mengmeng, don't be sad. Uncle Qian will be fine."
"Yeah, didn't the doctor say the problem isn't serious? Xiao Meng, you're tired too, why don't you eat something and take a rest."
Qian Mengmeng looked up and saw the worried looks of the two people. She forced a smile and shook her head, saying, "No, I have no appetite."
The electrocardiograph beeped and drew a series of ups and downs. She looked down at Father Qian lying unconscious on the bed and pursed her lips in sadness.
Mr. Qian was lucky enough to fall on the air cushion laid by the firefighters. The railing did not hit him, but he was caught on the outdoor clothes drying rack of the third-floor resident's house during the fall. However, his brain was impacted and he fell into a coma. He was rushed to the hospital. The various examinations prescribed by the doctor had just been completed, and the results were not yet known.
Qian Mengmeng couldn't help but blame herself in frustration: "If I had persuaded him to come down earlier, maybe this wouldn't have happened..."
Mother Wen sighed, gently held her hand, and comforted her: "Xiao Meng, this is not your fault, you don't need to blame yourself too much. No one thought that such an accident would happen. It's not your fault."
Wen Yuzheng quickly interjected: "Yes, yes, and if Uncle Qian wakes up and sees you sad, he will definitely be sad too."
Qian Mengmeng watched them racking their brains to think of words to comfort her, and her heart could not help but warm up. She knew that staying any longer would be useless and would only make Mother Wen more worried, so she rubbed her brows tiredly and said softly, "I'm going out to relax."
Wen Yu was picking up the coat hanging on the chair and putting it on in a hurry: "I'll accompany you..."
Qian Mengmeng shook her head and politely refused: "No, I want to be alone."
Wen Yu opened his mouth to say something, but when he saw Qian Mengmeng looked so tired, he couldn't say anything.
He nodded slightly and compromised helplessly: "Okay, if Uncle Qian wakes up, I will come to find you. You...don't think too much, I'm still here, if there is anything, we can find a solution together."
Qian Mengmeng thanked him and walked out of the ward. She looked at the busy corridor and stood there in a daze for a while. She couldn't tell which way to go out. She walked up the stairs aimlessly. She didn't know how long it had been before she came to a quiet and spacious terrace.
She leaned on the marble railing of the terrace and looked down. The tall trees were connected together, lush and green, and swayed in the wind from time to time, making a rustling sound. If it were normal, the green scenery would indeed make people feel a lot more comfortable, but today she was not in the mood to appreciate such a view. Her heart seemed to be pressed down by something, and every beat made her feel exhausted.
Whenever she thought of the scary scene on the rooftop, she couldn't help feeling scared. Even if she just closed her eyes for a moment, the scene would keep flashing in her mind.
Just a little bit...
If her father had fallen off the right side and not landed on the air cushion, or if the loose railing had not been caught by the clothes drying rack and had fallen directly...
Qian Mengmeng didn't dare to think any further. She clenched the railing with both hands, her fingertips turned white, her body trembled slightly because of fear, and tears welled up in her eyes, like pearls that had broken off the string, dropping one drop after another on the white stone railing, leaving a trail of water. She raised her hand to wipe it away, but she couldn't stop the tears from flowing more and more, as if she was silently expressing the grievances in her heart.
"You...are crying again?"
The voice behind her startled Qian Mengmeng. She wiped her cheeks hastily, raised an ugly smile, turned around, looked at Pei Haochuan, and denied it as if nothing had happened: "No, no, who cried."
However, her red eyes and slightly hoarse voice were not convincing at all.
"You looked a little off when you came out of the ward..." Pei Haochuan threw the can in his hand to Qian Mengmeng, walked slowly to her side, glanced at the marks on the white stone railing, but said nothing. He opened another can, took a sip, and said, "Luckily I bought hot cocoa. Scientific experimental data shows that eating desserts when you are depressed and sad can help cheer you up and improve your happiness index."
Qian Mengmeng hurriedly took the cocoa he threw to her. The iron can was still hot, which made her cold hands regain some warmth. She leaned against the solid white stone railing. She didn't rush to drink it. She held it with both hands, looked up at the blue sky, and listened to Pei Haochuan talking about happiness index beside her. She muttered, "Where did the experimental data come from..."
Pei Haochuan did not comment. He turned his head to look at Qian Mengmeng, who had a gloomy face, with his eyebrows slightly drooping, revealing an embarrassed look.
He really didn't know how to comfort a girl who was in grief. The topic about hot cocoa was the only topic he had seen in scientific reports that fit this scenario. If he talked to her about positive and negative ions, biological experiments... Although he was good at explaining knowledge, his intuition told him that he shouldn't talk about such topics at this time, otherwise it would only lead Qian Mengmeng's emotions to a worse situation.
He leaned forward slightly, resting his arms on the white stone railing, his eyes looking towards the green shade in the distance, but when he came to his senses, he realized that he had been staring at Qian Mengmeng for a long time.
Seeing that Qian Mengmeng didn't notice, he turned his head away guiltily, drank a few sips of cocoa to cover it up, and cleared his throat: "Well, when people encounter sad things, the amount of caffeine secreted by the brain will decrease..."
"What?" Qian Mengmeng looked over blankly.
It seems that this topic is also wrong.
Pei Haochuan pursed his lips, looked at the shadows of the trees in the distance, and shook his head: "Nothing."
"I know... you want to comfort me." Qian Mengmeng lowered her head, looked at the cocoa in her hand, raised the corners of her lips and forced a smile, and said self-deprecatingly, "Actually, I don't know what happened to me today. Obviously, I was never like this before."
"Sadness is not..." Pei Haochuan frowned, thinking about the right words, and said awkwardly, "It is not an emotion that needs to be hidden. You can tell me. I'm here, and I will listen."
He seemed to have thought of something and added, "No charge or deduction."
Qian Mengmeng couldn't help but smile, she looked up at the endless blue sky, tears welled up in her eyes but she stubbornly refused to let them fall.
She sighed softly and spoke vaguely, "Actually, my father was not like this before. Although I was still young at that time and can't remember much, I still remember the high-spirited look on his face when he talked to me. He always told me that the future life is full of hope."
Pei Haochuan listened silently, but felt that the person Qian Mengmeng was talking about was completely different from the Qian father he saw today who was about to jump off the building. Qian Mengmeng said that her father always talked about hope at that time, but Pei Haochuan only saw despair.
"It would be great if everything could be smooth sailing like that, but unfortunately..." Qian Mengmeng seemed to sigh with emotion and helplessness, "He was betrayed when he guaranteed for his friend, and my mother wanted to divorce him but she got into a car accident and left us forever. My father wanted to pay back the debt, but for some reason, the creditor disappeared inexplicably."
"Creditor?" Pei Haochuan asked in confusion, "He didn't ask for the debt but disappeared?"
"Yes, that's what my father said to me. I also find it strange." Qian Mengmeng's fingers unconsciously picked at the iron ring on the cocoa can, making a crisp "click" sound, and continued, "My mother's death was a big blow to my father. My father always wanted to make a lot of money so that I could live a better life, so he was obsessed with investment. No matter how difficult life was, I always supported him because I thought that was his hope. But today I feel like I did something wrong..."
Finally, she couldn't hold back her tears, and they flowed from the corners of her eyes into her hair.
She choked up and said, "I have not fulfilled my responsibilities as a daughter. I unconditionally supported his hopes, but in fact, I just let him immerse himself in the dream he wove and was unwilling to face the reality. In the end, I was just hurting him. After this accident today, if I continue to support him as before, who knows what will happen if I fail again... I have been wrong all along."
It was the first time that Pei Haochuan saw Qian Mengmeng so vulnerable. Usually, she was always optimistic in front of him, and she didn't care about any difficulties. However, he realized today that she was just pretending to be strong. With so many things on her shoulders, she couldn't show her vulnerability, so she had to pretend to be indifferent.
As he thought about this, he inexplicably felt as if a needle was hanging on his heart, which hurt slightly with each beat.
Pei Haochuan forcefully pulled Qian Mengmeng's head onto his shoulder, and said in a very stiff tone, "Lean on it."
Qian Mengmeng was startled, "What, what are you doing?"
Pei Haochuan didn't know why he did something that was inconsistent with his usual image. One hand froze there, and he explained with a stiff face: "Don't you say that it would be much better to have a shoulder to lean on when you are sad? Here is a ready-made one, so don't be sad after you lean on it."
Qian Mengmeng was stunned for a moment, and couldn't help laughing. She leaned her head on his warm shoulder obediently, closed her eyes, and whispered, "Thank you."
Although Pei Haochuan is usually picky and likes to make things difficult for others, he is actually... a pretty good person.
The warm breeze travels slowly throughout the spring, playfully falling into people's ears, whispering silent words.
Not knowing whether the "shoulder therapy" really worked , Qian Mengmeng felt much more at ease. She stood up slightly and was about to formally express her gratitude to Pei Haochuan, but suddenly she heard Wen Yuzheng's voice, with a complex tone: "You...what are you doing?"
Qian Mengmeng's body immediately stretched straight like a spring. She looked at Wen Yuzheng awkwardly and spoke incoherently: "Um, Brother Yuzheng, we..."
Pei Haochuan replied calmly: "I'm comforting her."
Wen Yuzheng chuckled, and the eyes hidden behind the gold-rimmed glasses looked sharply at Pei Haochuan, and said unceremoniously: "I will comfort our Xiao Meng, so don't worry about it."
Wen Yuzheng always spoke softly to Qian Mengmeng since she was a child, and she had never heard him speak in such a confrontational tone.
Seeing Pei Haochuan frowning, it was obvious that this made him unhappy. In order to avoid a quarrel between the two of them, Qian Mengmeng quickly changed the subject and asked Wen Yuzheng: "Brother Yuzheng, what do you want to see me for?"
A bad premonition suddenly flashed through her mind, and she asked nervously, "Could something have happened to my dad?"
"Don't worry, it's a good thing." Wen Yu was looking at Qian Mengmeng, his eyes became gentle and peaceful again, "Uncle Qian is awake."
"Awake? Really?" Qian Mengmeng's eyes lit up, and she hugged Pei Haochuan beside her, jumping and dancing happily, "Pei Haochuan, did you hear that? My dad is awake!"
Pei Haochuan didn't expect her to hug him. He was caught off guard for a moment. Seeing her joyful expression, he froze in place, with a hint of red on his ears. After a while, he nodded randomly and said vaguely, "Yeah, I heard it."
Wen Yuzheng's face darkened. He grabbed Qian Mengmeng's arm and pulled her away from Pei Haochuan with a little force. He urged, "Let's go. Uncle Qian is waiting for you."
Qian Mengmeng waved to Pei Haochuan: "Then I'll go first, you come quickly! Dad must want to see you too."
Wen Yuzheng silently grabbed her wrist and strode away.
Pei Haochuan watched them leave. After a while, he reached out and touched his burning ears, muttering to himself, "Strange... Why are they so hot?"
