Chapter 4: Strange Sounds 3. Weird old man
Officer Zhong wanted to take Wu Yu to the station, but Wu Yu declined. It was their first meeting, and there was no reason for a police officer to drive him to the bus in a police car. When he arrived at the station to catch a bus, Wu Yu did not take Xiaoxue's bus. On the way back, Wu Yu felt more and more that things were weird. Why couldn't he find the person he was looking for? Suddenly he remembered the man at the post office and dialed the number, but still couldn't get through. He wondered why the man hadn't come to work yet? While he was thinking, the phone suddenly rang. He was startled and saw that it was Yunyun calling. Wu Yu pressed the answer button. Yunyun asked him if he had found the person. Wu Yu told her the result and said that he was in a hurry to go back. Yunyun didn't say anything and asked him to pack dinner when he came back. Wu Yu responded, and Yunyun said she hung up.
Wu Yu returned to Wuzhen with doubts. It was already night, but it was still drizzling. Wu Yu cursed the heavens in his heart. Why did it rain all day long after he came to Wuzhen? It seemed as if the sky was about to fall down, or something big was going to happen.
After the meal, he packed up and returned to the old house. As usual, he did not feel any uneasiness or abnormality. However, when he walked to the door, he found that the door was open. Wu Yu knew that Yunyun was timid and would definitely close the door if he went out. So he walked in with doubt and found that there was no sign of Yunyun in the dark room. He felt strange. How could the door be open if she was not there? So he called several times: "Yunyun, Yunyun..." But only his voice echoed in the silent house.
Wu Yu suddenly felt that Yunyun might have been in trouble, or maybe she had gone somewhere else. He suddenly remembered the lantern on the stage, and when he lit his lighter, he found that the lantern was not on the stage, so he breathed a sigh of relief. Where did she go? Wu Yu pondered, his face looking very uneasy. Wu Yu suddenly remembered why he didn't call, and he cursed himself in his heart for being so stupid. Wu Yu dialed Yunyun's number, and the phone rang "la la la..." It was the Korean Jang Nara singing. Wu Yu heard the ringtone coming from the bed, and when he looked over, he saw Yunyun's phone flashing a blue light. "Why didn't Yunyun bring her phone? She must have just left for a while." Wu Yu thought about this and gradually felt relieved.
Wu Yu thought he should wait for her to come back in the room, but after a long time, Yunyun still didn't come back, and he began to feel uneasy. Wu Yu remembered that when he came back, the door was closed, Yunyun should not go out, then she - Wu Yu was suddenly startled, he remembered the mysterious old man, the piano music at midnight, could it be Yunyun - thinking about this, he hurriedly got up and went out to the backyard.
As soon as he stepped into the backyard, just like the last two times, a cold and gloomy air suddenly surged over him, and he couldn't help but shiver.
Wu Yu was walking towards a house he didn't know. In the silence, he suddenly heard a series of sounds coming from Tuotuo. Wu Yu was startled. After listening carefully, he found that the sound really came from the backyard. What was that sound? Wu Yu walked towards the sound with doubt and anxiety, relying on the light of the lighter.
"Tuo Tuo - Tuo Tuo -" The sound became clearer as Wu Yu approached. Wu Yu suddenly saw a dim light in front of him, which came from one of the houses, and heard the sound coming from that house. Wu Yu walked over in surprise. Wu Yu heard the sound seemed to be the sound of a knife chopping bones. Wu Yu wondered who was chopping what? Hadn't the old house been abandoned all the time? Wu Yu suddenly thought of Yunyun. Could Yunyun have been in trouble? He quickened his pace in fear and walked to the door of the room. He took a deep breath to make himself less nervous, and then pushed the door open with force.
As soon as he opened the door, he saw a shocking scene. A lantern in the room emitted a dim light, illuminating the bloodstains in front of Wu Yu. He looked along the bloodstains and saw a person's back. The person slowly turned his head, and a thin face showed a strange look. Wu Yu thought he saw a ghost and was trembling with fear. When he looked carefully, it turned out to be the old man who brought them to the old house. Wu Yu was shocked and whispered, "Uncle, what are you doing?"
The old man said quietly, "The cats in the yard were getting more and more rampant, so I slaughtered one."
Wu Yu's tense nerves relaxed instantly when he heard this, and he asked, "Why haven't I seen you these days, Uncle?"
The old man waved to Wu Yu and asked him to sit down. Wu Yu walked over and sat on the chair next to the old man. As soon as Wu Yu sat down, the old man said, "I went back to my hometown for some things and forgot to tell you that this old house is not abandoned as the legend says. I have always lived here. Of course, I am not alone. There are also my two beautiful granddaughters. They come back sometimes."
Wu Yu was slightly surprised, and suddenly remembered that the woman in the red cheongsam that night might be the granddaughter mentioned by the old man. His doubts were largely resolved.
As I was thinking, the old man continued, "Why did you come to rent this old house that is said to be haunted? Aren't you afraid of really encountering a ghost?"
Wu Yu's question to the old man reminded him of the purpose of his visit to Wuzhen, so he asked, "Old man, have you lived here for many years?"
The old man nodded.
"The old man must know about the murder that happened in this old house two years ago. The purpose of my visit this time is to find out the truth about the death of the deceased, because the deceased is a very good colleague of mine."
After hearing this, the old man shook his head. Wu Yu felt that the old man should know about what happened to Su Wei two years ago, but he was unwilling to tell him about it. Wu Yu was very puzzled, but since the old man didn't want to say anything, it was not convenient for Wu Yu to continue asking.
The old man turned around silently and took the knife to chop at the bloody dead cat. The sound of "Tuo-Tuo--" rang out clearly from the room, which made him feel cold in his heart.
Wu Yu felt it was inconvenient to stay for long and left the room.
Wu Yu returned to the room with doubts. Seeing that there was still no fire in the room, he became worried about Yunyun. Wu Yu walked into the room and planned to light the light and wait for Yunyun to come back. Suddenly, he vaguely felt a figure in the dim light, staring at him intently. When he looked closely, he was so scared that he almost couldn't hold the lighter.
The dark figure suddenly asked faintly: "Why did you come back so late?"
Wu Yu recognized that it was Yunyun, and he got angry. He said in a scolding tone: "Where have you been? You made me worried. Why didn't you turn on the light when you returned to the room?" Wu Yu turned on the light while cursing.
After talking for a while, he saw Yunyun remained silent. He turned around and was about to ask her why she didn't speak, but he was suddenly startled to see Yunyun wearing that red cheongsam and looking at him with a wandering gaze. Wu Yu was even more shocked to see her like this. If the person in front of him wasn't Yunyun, he would have thought he had seen a ghost.
"I just went to the bathroom and put on this red cheongsam because I had nothing to wear." Yunyun said with a sly smile on her face. Wu Yu didn't notice anything wrong.
Wu Yu remembered that the toilet was in a dark corner of the courtyard, where fallen leaves covered the ground, making it look more eerie than other places in the courtyard . Suddenly he remembered what he had seen the mysterious old man just now, and told Yunyun about it. After hearing this, Yunyun suddenly showed a surprised look and asked, "What did he say to you?"
"He said he had always lived here, but had just returned to his hometown in the past few days. I thought he might know about Su Wei's death, so when I asked him about it, he avoided telling me. I became more and more suspicious that there might be another truth to Su Wei's death. Moreover, I saw a person's back that looked like Su Wei, so I sometimes felt that Su Wei was not dead."
After hearing this, Yunyun remained silent, said she was hungry, and walked to the front of the stage to open her lunch box.
