“All the causes of disasters, plunder, complaints, and resentments in the world are due to the lack of universal love.
"If the princes treat other countries as they treat their own countries, there will be no field wars. If the head of a family treats other families as they treat their own families, there will be no plunder. If you treat others as you treat yourself, there will be no harm.
"When rulers and ministers love each other, they will benevolent and loyal to each other; when fathers and sons love each other, they will be kind and filial to each other; when brothers love each other, they will be harmonious and at peace with each other.
“If everyone loves everyone, then the strong will help the weak, the rich will help the poor, the noble will teach the humble, and the wise will teach the foolish.
"If everyone is equal, the world will be peaceful and free of disasters. If everyone in the world loves each other, they will benefit each other!"

"In the past, Duke Wen of Jin liked his scholars to wear clothes that were disliked by the people of the time, so his officials all wore fur coats made of ewe skin, cowhide belts to hang swords, and hats made of cooked silk.
"How can I wear this unceremonious and unacceptable attire to meet the monarch and go to and fro in the court? Because the monarch likes it, so I do it.
"In the past, King Ling of Chu liked people with thin waists, so his subjects would eat a meal to diet, hold their breath before tying their belts, and hold on to the wall before standing up.
"After a year, the court officials were so thin and hungry that their faces turned dark. Why was that? Because the monarch liked it, so the officials could do it.
"In the past, King Gou Jian of Yue loved his soldiers to be brave. When training his subjects, he would first gather them together, then set fire to the ships, and test his soldiers by saying: 'All the treasures of Yue are in these ships.'
"The King of Yue personally beat the drum to order his soldiers to advance. When the soldiers heard the drum, they rushed forward, disrupting the formation. More than a hundred soldiers and close officials died in the fire. Only then did the King of Yue sound the horn to order them to retreat.
"So, eating less, wearing bad clothes, and killing oneself for fame are all things that are difficult for ordinary people to do. But if the monarch likes it, then the people can do it.
"Compared with this, loving and benefiting each other is completely different. It is what people are willing to do and is a good thing. Because whoever loves others will be loved by others. Whoever benefits others will be benefited by others. Whoever hates others will be hated by others. Whoever harms others will be harmed by others.
"What difficulty is there in practicing this kind of universal love? It is simply because the king in a high position does not practice universal love in politics, the scholars do not practice universal love in their conduct, and the people do not put universal love into practice."
