Chapter 3 Overlapping Worlds 1
People always seem strange and indifferent to each other, but in fact they are always inextricably linked. We integrate into each other's lives invisibly, have different influences, and change the path of the future. But we don't know whether the train of life will rush forward or deviate from the original track?
After that basketball game, Xiang Nanfeng naturally integrated himself into the relationship between Jiang Xing and me. Although at the beginning he just followed Jiang Xing madly to ask her for advice on basketball skills, after several setbacks, he still persevered and Jiang Xing finally softened her heart.
It can be seen that Xiang Nanfeng is not an annoying person.
His eyes were bright when he spoke, without a trace of shadow. Whenever someone encountered any difficulties, he would always be the first to rush forward and do his best to help.
In a sense, he and Jiang Xing are from the same world.
Gradually, I got used to his presence, playing ball and eating with Jiang Xing. When he was thirsty, he would snatch a bottle of cold green tea from me like a rogue.
The doubts I once had became elusive along with the joy that invaded my life every day. Perhaps his previous behaviors were really just because he wanted to get to know me and be an ordinary friend?
I began to accept his existence.
During the school's lunch break, Nanfeng used his privilege to get the key to the rooftop door. We took our prepared lunch and planned to enjoy a quiet lunch break on the sunny rooftop.
"You're really good at this. I always thought the school rooftop was a forbidden place!" Jiang Xing was the first to run over and looked around as if he had discovered a new continent.
"It's nothing, it's just that the environment and scenery here are great. If everyone could come in, it would be packed every day." Xiang Nanfeng explained simply, glancing at her, "You're so stupid. You can't even think this through."
I followed them silently, laid out the lunch for the three of them neatly, and said softly, "Let's eat first, it's getting cold."
Xiang Nanfeng responded immediately, sat down next to me, and squinted his eyes: "I heard from Jiang Xing that you like to eat eggs? I have some here too! Eat more, you are too thin!"
“No need.” I turned my head away awkwardly, “I can’t finish it.”
"It's okay. If you can't finish it, just eat the egg yolk. It's nutritious!" He didn't care about my refusal at all. He directly opened the lunch box and picked the egg in.
Xiang Nanfeng was very close to me, and he exuded a faint, grass-like, refreshing scent. I subconsciously wanted to step back a few steps, but when I looked up, I saw those sincere eyes, staring at me expectantly, as if waiting for a satisfactory answer.
"Okay..." I finally gave in and said with a smile, "Thank you."
He let out a long sigh.
"Stupid! Who said only egg yolks have high nutritional value? Egg whites are the same!" Jiang Xing also picked her eggs and put them into my lunch box. "Don't be too partial. I also like to eat tomatoes. Why don't you give me the tomatoes?"
Xiang Nanfeng rolled his eyes. He seemed to still be upset about the disastrous defeat in the last basketball game, so he protected the lunch box stingily: "I can give it to you! But it can't be that simple..."
"It's just a few slices of tomato. Are you so stingy?" Jiang Xing rolled her eyes. "How about this, let's play rock-paper-scissors? If you lose, the tomatoes are mine. If I lose, I buy you Coke for a week!"
"I don't want to eat my tomatoes. I'll give them to you?" Looking at Jiang Xing's stubborn look, I couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"No need! I'm going to make him convinced today!" Jiang Xing rolled up his sleeves with excitement, "I think this bet is not exciting enough, how about... the loser does something earth-shattering?"
Xiang Nanfeng seemed very satisfied with this proposal. He was originally a little gloomy about the rock-paper-scissors game, but he suddenly sat up straight and nodded repeatedly: "Then it's settled!"
So the two energetic people threw away their lunch which was almost getting cold and started the rock-paper-scissors game.
I shook my head helplessly and finally decided not to stop them. Instead, I closed the lid of the lunch box and became a quiet bystander.
It must be said that Jiang Xing is an all-powerful girl. Not only is she excellent in sports that boys are good at, but she can also easily win in rock-paper-scissors, which is completely based on luck. After five rounds of confrontation, Xiang Nanfeng's face had turned livid. He sighed and gave all the tomatoes in the lunch box to Jiang Xing, then held his chin and pondered.
"There is one more important thing, don't forget it." Jiang Xing said excitedly while chewing tomatoes quickly.
But as soon as he said this, Xiang Nanfeng, who was sitting on the ground thinking, suddenly jumped up like a spring and ran towards the exit of the rooftop for his life.
"Wait! I'm going to surprise you!"
His oath-like cry echoed for a long time above the empty rooftop, leaving Jiang Xing and I looking at each other in bewilderment, not knowing what was going on.
"You really do what you say..." Jiang Xing poked at the tomatoes in the lunch box blankly, and it took him a while to come back to his senses.
"What big thing will he do?" I was also a little curious.
Jiang Xing shook her head: "Who could have guessed such a sudden decision? You're not going to buy me a whole box of tomatoes, are you? Hahaha..."
The cool breeze gently brushed past my ears. Looking at Jiang Xing's charming smile like a gardenia, I couldn't help but be infected. I opened my mouth to make a joke, but I heard a "crackling" sound from the campus radio, like a pair of cruel hands, tearing apart the tranquility and beauty at this moment.
The shrill noise lasted for a few seconds, and we all put down our chopsticks.
Jiang Xing suddenly stood up excitedly and said loudly: "I know, it must be Xiang Nanfeng!"
"Hello, students who are taking a lunch break. It is a sunny day today. I am very happy to bring you a shocking news during this sunny lunch break..."
As Jiang Xing was confident in his judgment, the deep and beautiful voice of Xiang Nanfeng, like a cello, was indeed heard in the huge campus.
I also stood up in shock.
"I want to announce to everyone and the whole world here that the person Xiang Nanfeng likes is Wen Yu. The person he likes most is Wen Yu... I say it again, the person Xiang Nanfeng likes is Wen Yu..."
At that moment, the whole world was filled with dark and gloomy colors, and it was rushing towards me with an unstoppable force.
On the radio, this simple sentence was still being repeated by Xiang Nanfeng. It was like a circle of spreading ripples, jumping in the air and falling into everyone's ears.
I was cold all over, as if I had fallen into an ice cellar, but I was so nervous and confused that I didn't know what to do. I was like a drowning traveler, waving my weak hands wildly, and subconsciously looking at my only life-saving straw - Jiang Xing.
But what I saw was Jiang Xing, who was also standing there in a daze. Her face was paler than ever before, as pale as white paper, and her lips, which were once as beautiful as roses, had lost their original color, as if they were coated with a layer of dry white ash.
Frightened by her expression, I murmured , "Jiang Xing?"
She suddenly came back to her senses and looked at me as if she had just woken up from a dream, but her eyes were unfocused .
I don't know how long it took for her cheeks to gradually regain their color, but she changed her expression in an instant, smiling as brightly as the sun: "Well, what's wrong?"
It was as if the absent-minded person just now was my illusion.
The harsh noise of the radio station has disappeared into the vast sky, and I seem to hear a hint of sadness in her words.
Looking at Jiang Xing like this, I felt that the wall around us, which was already fragile to begin with, seemed to be starting to show tiny cracks.
A strong sense of uneasiness surrounded me. I opened my mouth several times and wanted to joke with her like I usually did, but the words kept rolling in my throat and I couldn't utter a single word.
This was the first time since we met that Jiang Xing and I were in such an awkward silence, and no one spoke a word.
There were hurried footsteps coming from the entrance to the rooftop not far away, as if one could find solace in this sound.
We all turned our heads tacitly, and saw a tall and slender figure becoming clearer and clearer.
Two faint red spots appeared on Xiang Nanfeng's clean face. He panted and held onto the fence. He raised his hand proudly and made a victory sign. His voice was still so carefree: "Why, are you scared by my declaration?"
Anxiety and silence were surging and struggling in the fresh air on the rooftop, as if they could explode at any time and shatter the peaceful surface of this world beyond recognition.
Xiang Nanfeng maintained that ridiculous posture, completely unaware of how subtly the atmosphere between us had changed because of his sudden action and declaration.
I heard Jiang Xing beside me take a deep breath, then smiled and said, "You are so brave! Are you going to scare us to death? Aren't you afraid that the teacher and the director will investigate?"
"Didn't you say you were going to do something big?" Xiang Nanfeng scratched his head embarrassedly, "It doesn't matter, they just think it's a joke, no big deal!"
"Yes! It was just a joke!"
I could no longer control the panic in my heart and spoke out tremblingly.
It must be... Please, this is just a ridiculous joke during an ordinary lunch break!
otherwise……
I looked at the three lunch boxes still placed closely together on the ground.
We can't go back to the past, can we?
Xiang Nanfeng looked at me speechlessly. A hint of understanding flashed across his intelligent eyes, but it quickly disappeared. He raised his eyebrows and walked to my side, gently patting my shoulder: "Why are you so nervous? Of course it's a joke!"
"Wen Yu, don't worry about him." Jiang Xing laughed and curled her lips, "Hurry up and eat, otherwise you will miss the next class."
The sounds of their laughter and quarreling covered up the last bit of uneasiness that remained in the air. I calmed my frantic breathing and picked up the lunch box again, but it tasted like chewing wax.
The afternoon classes slowly ended in the aftermath of the lunch break farce. I don’t know if it was my illusion, but the curious and inquiring eyes of the classmates around us seemed to be always on us. However, Xiang Nanfeng and Jiang Xing didn’t care at all. They still quarreled for a long time over trivial matters, and finally waved goodbye to each other under the orange-red sunset.
Walking back to my uncle's house dejectedly, looking at my elongated shadow, I kept comforting myself that I should quickly forget about this terrifying joke today... Perhaps the subtle changes I felt were just an illusion caused by uneasiness?
With my cold hands holding the door handle, I took a deep breath, made my expression look more natural, and then quietly opened the door.
At this time every day, my uncle's house is very quiet. Occasionally, Cheng Panpan will sit in front of the computer and watch a movie, while my uncle and aunt will come back very late.
But today, it seems that everything has exceeded my expectations.
In the smoke-filled living room, my uncle sat in a corner with his head down, a burnt-out cigarette in his hand, and the ashtray on the table was filled with cigarette butts .
His aunt also stood beside him with her arms folded, looking gloomy, her eyes red and swollen, and her face full of tear marks.
I sighed inwardly, thinking that I was not lucky enough and chose the wrong time to go home.
"Uncle, aunt, I'm back." Facing two people who were in a very bad mood, I tried to keep my voice down.
As expected, I didn't get a response.
"You've come back to our house and you're putting on this lifeless expression. Who are you showing it to?" My aunt suddenly rubbed her eyes and raised her voice, "Maybe it's because of your bitter face that I..."
"Hey! Don't blame Wen Yu!" My uncle interrupted her softly, took another deep puff of the cigarette in his hand, then raised his head and gave me a forced smile, "Wen Yu, your aunt...is not in good health. She was just diagnosed with breast cancer, so she's in a bad mood. Don't take it to heart."
"Who are you to speak for her?" My aunt roared, and her murderous gaze turned to my uncle again, "Don't I even have the right to teach her a lesson now? Do you also think that I am about to die, and my position in this family has disappeared..."
As she spoke, her angry voice gradually subsided and turned into a plaintive whimper.
My uncle frowned, quickly threw away the cigarette in his hand, gently stroked my aunt's back, and gave me a look: "Wen Yu, go and pour your aunt a cup of tea."
I didn't dare to delay, so I put down my schoolbag and ran to the kitchen to make tea. I skimmed off the tea leaves and placed the warm white porcelain cup on the coffee table covered with cigarette ash.
"Go away! I don't want your fake kindness! Seeing me seriously ill, you must be laughing in your heart!" My aunt wiped her tears and yelled at me, "Don't think I don't know what you are thinking!"
"Aunt, don't think too much and drink some tea." Facing her accusations, I didn't take them to heart and just pushed the cup of tea forward.
"Let's go, Wen Yu, let your aunt calm down." Uncle waved his hand quickly.
"How can I be quiet? There are still so many houseworks to do! You haven't eaten yet..."
"Leave it to me." I said softly.
“Okay, I’ll leave it all to you. Come on, go back to your room first…” My uncle was so anxious that his tone became impatient.
I nodded, picked up my bag again, and walked back to my room quietly.
I tidied the room, did all the housework, and prepared dinner. I took my portion into the room and ate it, then took out my textbook to review my homework, but I heard a "bang" and the tightly closed door was pushed open by a great force.
I didn't look back.
The only person who would come to my room at this time would be Cheng Panpan.
"Sister Wen Yu, did you cook today's dinner? It's delicious!" She jumped to sit next to me and casually pushed the neatly arranged textbooks aside, "It would be great if you cooked every day!"
I smiled and stroked her hair: "If you like, I will cook it for you every day."
"Okay! Then I want to eat curry beef rice tomorrow!" She took my arm intimately, "By the way, I have good news to tell you. Today I confessed my love to Lu Tianyi and gave him a bouquet of roses that I carefully selected..."
"Today?" I was a little surprised.
"Yes! He was very nervous at the beginning, but later he accepted my flowers with affection, and even hugged me in his arms..." As she spoke, Cheng Panpan's fair face turned red, and the hand that was holding my arm became very strong.
But I felt a little uneasy.
She seemed to be in a good mood. Could it be that she didn't know that her aunt had been diagnosed with breast cancer?
Although I didn't want to affect her happiness, the safety of my family should be put first. After thinking for a while, I still spoke carefully: "Pan Pan, don't you... know about your mother's situation?"
Unexpectedly, Cheng Panpan just casually grabbed a colored pen on the table and started scribbling: "I know, my dad told me."
The brush rubbed against the rough white paper, making a rustling sound.
The dim light fell softly on her delicate face, and her smile was still carefree and full of happiness.
"Then why don't you go spend more time with her?" I suppressed my shock and asked softly, "Aunt seems very sad."
"What's the point of me accompanying her? She will just keep crying to me , telling me how miserable she is..." She pouted in annoyance, "Just listen to me continue talking about God's will! After accepting my confession, we went to the park together, and he helped me carry my schoolbag..."
"Pan Pan." I interrupted her with a sigh, "Be obedient and put Lu Tianyi's matter aside for now, even if it's just to go and talk to your aunt."
With a snap, Cheng Panpan threw away the colored pen in her hand unhappily, turned her head and stared at me impatiently.
"Aren't you tired of hearing me lectured one by one?" Her tone was icy, completely different from her previous warm and cheerful tone. "I've already told you that you don't need me to comfort you at all!"
"Be obedient. If you go, your aunt will be in a better mood and it will also be good for your recovery."
"Wen Yu!" She stood up with a hint of danger in her eyes. "You don't want to hear me talk about Lu Tianyi, right? Then why are you pretending to have other excuses? You can't tell me what to do!"
After saying that, she left with a gloomy face without waiting for my answer, slamming the door loudly, leaving me alone in the room. I felt that her thoughts were a little incomprehensible.
All the events that happened in the past few days were mixed together, and my head began to ache slightly. I got up to get some medicine and water, and looked at the sky outside the window which was beginning to darken, and something in my heart moved.
Has Nino not rested yet?
