Chapter 27 Flaps Deflection
At the head of runway 23, Qin Xin stood on the passenger elevator and looked at the Feiyu 6321 plane getting lower and lower in the distance, feeling upset. At this time, even the secretary who didn't know much about flying could see that the altitude of Feiyu 6321 was wrong.
"Why are they so low?" the secretary was worried. "Can they still land on the runway?"
Almost at the moment when the secretary finished speaking, due to the slope of the runway itself, the 737 disappeared directly on the horizon and disappeared from the sight of the two people.
The secretary covered her mouth in fear: "It fell! The plane... fell!"
Qin Xin sighed quietly: "I shouldn't have come out."
In Qin Xin's opinion, everyone on the plane was dead, and maybe with luck, a few people could survive. But she was not a heartless person, and she naturally did not want to see such a tragic situation.
"Has the car not arrived yet?" Qin Xin turned her head away and stopped looking at the place where the plane crashed. "It will be very messy here soon, so it's better to leave early."
Suddenly, Qin Xin's heart moved, as if she felt something.
Why is it so quiet? There should be some noise when a plane crashes, so why can't we hear anything yet?
Suddenly, Qin Xin saw the secretary's shocked face and couldn't help but frowned: "What's wrong?"
The secretary stared blankly into the distance, then slowly raised her slender finger and pointed to the distance: "Miss, it... is up again!"
"What?" Qin Xin was shocked and turned her head sharply, looking at the sky at the other end of the runway. With just one glance, her pupils suddenly contracted, as if she had seen the most terrifying thing in the world.
The plane that had disappeared over the horizon suddenly soared into the sky again as if assisted by God and came into view again.
"Impossible, how could this happen? It should have no power, so why can it still get up?" Qin Xin held onto the railing of the elevator with one hand, almost falling down in shock: "This shouldn't be happening, why is this happening?"
"It should be like this, it should be like this!" In the cockpit, Xu Cang, who was sitting in the right seat, roared almost crazily: "God will not abandon me, God will not abandon me!"
It was originally a fatal situation, but with the help of an unexpected updraft, there was a turning point.
The captain on the left was also very surprised, but beads of sweat oozed out of his back. If Xu Cang had not hesitated a little before lowering the flaps and landing gear, as long as the flaps and landing gear, especially the landing gear, were lowered, even if they encountered an updraft, they would still be dead.
The landing gear and flaps will give the aircraft an additional upward moment when they are extended, but this upward moment will not last long and will eventually turn into resistance.
"Three hundred feet, it's time!" Xu Cang restrained his crazy laughter and bared his teeth: "Flap five!"
The captain was startled, but he collected his thoughts and immediately lowered the flaps from position 1 to position 5 as Xu Cang requested. However, before the hydraulic system could lower the flaps to position 5, Xu Cang immediately gave another command: "Lower the wheels, flaps 15!"
Flaps are never the most important thing in this situation . The standard landing configuration for a single engine is flaps 15, but there is no standard landing configuration for a twin engine out.
Unlike the standards for single-engine landing, there is no clear enough standard for landing with dual-engine failure, because whether or not the plane can land in this situation depends heavily on luck. Even Boeing has no clear regulations on whether or not to land on the runway with dual-engine failure.
When it really comes to this moment, no matter what configuration is used, no matter where it falls, no matter what technique is used, as long as it can land, it is the correct way.
Since there is no standard for the flap position, we should understand what is important and what is not. What's more, it takes time to release and lock the landing gear, and we can't wait any longer.
Generally speaking, lowering the first level flaps needs to wait until the previous level flaps are lowered into place. But this time, Xu Cang didn't have the leisure to do so.
The captain was so desperate at this point that he didn't care about anything else. He simply lowered the landing gear handle and put the flap handle to the 15th position, ignoring the flap indicator.
During this action, the plane dropped another 100 feet. The captain did not forget his duty and quickly shouted on the passenger broadcast: "Altitude 200 feet!"
Then he reached for the boost panel on the top plate with his right hand and wanted to turn off the component switch first. However, the moment he touched the component switch, he remembered that due to the shutdown of both engines, both components had no boost.
Logically, the pressurized air in the cabin should have leaked out by now. However, the captain still turned the pressurization mode selector to the manual position and turned the exhaust valve to the open position until the indicator indicated that the exhaust valve was fully open.
Although this operation seems a bit redundant under current circumstances, in some extreme cases, it is still possible that the cabin door cannot be opened due to the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the cabin. This is really fatal when it happens during evacuation, and the captain cannot let this happen.
With the flaps and landing gear extended, the aircraft not only did not descend in a short period of time, but even leveled out in an instant. However, with the disappearance of the fleeting updraft, the initial upward moment of the landing gear and flaps disappeared at the same time, and the aircraft began to enter a rapid descent phase after passing the last 200 feet of altitude.
Two hundred feet is sixty meters, which may not seem high, but it is still deadly!
"Too fast, too fast!" Xu Cang's heart tightened. The chance of survival that he had finally found was about to slip away. How could he let this happen? So he suddenly shouted, "Keep lowering the flaps, flaps twenty-five, thirty, forty, don't stop!"
The captain's hand grasped the flap handle without hesitation, but when he glanced at the airspeed indicator from the corner of his eye, his pupils shrank: "No, the speed is too high, the flaps will unload."
In a low-altitude environment, the space for correction becomes smaller. Xu Cang took advantage of the rising air flow to increase the speed of the aircraft to within a normal range to prevent the speed from being too low and affecting the effect of the aircraft's rudder surfaces.
However, because the flaps were lowered too quickly, the aircraft did not even have time to slow down. At flaps 30 and 40, if the speed was too high, flap unloading would occur.
It was the captain's hesitation that directly annoyed Xu Cang, who shouted, "I don't care whether it is unloaded or not, just let it go, all the way to the bottom!"
The captain didn't say anything else and started to lower the flaps continuously following Xu Cang's request.
Xu Cang narrowed his eyes slightly. Life or death, success or failure, all depended on this one move. But what he didn't know was that as the flaps were extended, the pointer on the flap position indicator began to gradually diverge.
