Chapter 24 Chapter 24
In the morning, the rain finally stopped. The leaves of the peach trees in the yard were blown to pieces, and green peaches as big as a baby's fist fell all over the ground.
The fruits were almost ripe, all thanks to this rain.
Father Huo got up early in the morning and did not disturb Huo Duan and his wife. Instead, Gu Fengyan heard him sweeping the floor in the yard, and came out with two dark circles under his eyes and said that Huo Duan was fine.
"The weather isn't very good. I'll take off the oilcloth and let the herbs dry out in the sun." Father Huo was finally relieved. Seeing that he didn't sleep well, he felt distressed. "Go to sleep for a while, my good boy. You've suffered so much."
After hearing those rumors before, Huo's father was worried that Gu Fengyan would dislike Huo Duan, but he saw how anxious he looked last night.
It doesn't look like they treat Huo Duan as an outsider at all.
His son was well, and the family was harmonious again. Father Huo was happy just thinking about it, "What do you want for breakfast? I'll make it after I sweep the floor."
Huo Duan was sick, and Gu Fengyan was sweating as well. He took a handkerchief, soaked it in cold water, and wiped his face. "Father, don't be busy. Wait for Huo Duan and I to wake up and clean up ourselves... I guess he doesn't feel like eating right now."
"That's fine, I can have some free time too." Father Huo said jokingly.
I collected all the peaches under the peach tree into a bamboo basket, intending to use it to feed the chickens and ducks.
Gu Fengyan glanced at the peach tree and found that there were only a few peaches left on it. "This rain is so annoying. How could it knock down all such good peaches?" He felt quite regretful.
Father Huo could only sigh and feel very distressed. He had been hoping to save the peaches for Yan'er to taste, but now they were all gone.
Gu Fengyan picked up the peach and looked at it.
"Dad, keep these peaches. It would be a waste to throw them away. Today, since I'm not busy, I'll use them to make some basil peaches and brew some green peach wine." The peaches have grown big and will be ripe in about a month and a half.
Although the peaches at this time were sour, they did not have much astringency. Huo Duan had just been seriously ill and naturally had no appetite. Pickling peaches with perilla did help him whet his appetite.
When Father Huo heard this, he naturally agreed. He tremblingly took the thin bamboo basket and carried the peaches into the kitchen.
Gu Fengyan wiped his face and finally woke up a little. It was only about six or seven in the morning.
All the medicinal herbs in the yard have been soaked in water, and we have to prepare them quickly in the afternoon.
He needs to rest for a while first.
The air after the rain was very clear, with the smell of grass and soil. Gu Fengyan took a long breath before returning to the bedroom.
…
When Huo Duan woke up from his serious illness, there was no one in the room.
My whole body felt weak and my head was in a mess, but my limbs felt so relaxed, as if I was reborn.
It seemed that Gu Fengyan was busy taking care of him last night, and he even invited Mr. Liang to come, but he couldn't remember clearly.
However, he knew that Gu Fengyan must not have slept the whole night, because there was a hole on the quilt, and there was still residual warmth... the person must have just gone out not long ago.
Huo Duan sat up, wearing his coat and with a pillow behind him. He opened the window a little, and the misty wind that blew in made him feel refreshed.
"Mr. Huo, you still dare to blow the wind? Don't you want to get sick again and tire me to death?" Gu Fengyan quietly pushed the door open and saw Huo Duan opening the window at a glance.
Only now did he realize that Huo Duan's illness in the latter part of the day was closely related to the crack in the window.
Huo Duan turned around and smiled, "Mr. Gu."
"Are you feeling better? Are you still feeling uncomfortable?" Gu Fengyan half-lay on the bed and closed the window again.
Huo Duan nodded, lowered his eyes and saw the dark circles under his eyes, "Ahem... much better, thank you."
Gu Fengyan got out of bed and didn't mention what happened last night. "Why thank me? We are friends. It's fine as long as you get better... You scared me."
He began to take off his outer shirt. He thought he would not sleep for long, so he did not change into pajamas. He just put on his underwear and lay down.
Huo Duan smiled and looked at him, "Didn't you sleep all night?"
"Well, it rained heavily last night. We collected about two or three hundred kilograms of medicinal herbs, and they were all soaked in the rain. We have to clean them up early in the afternoon. I'll take a nap first. Call me at noon." Gu Fengyan's pillow and quilt were still on Huo Duan's bed, and he didn't take them.
I'm so sleepy.
Huo Duan didn't respond. He got out of bed with a rustle, picked up the quilt and pillow, and said, "Get up. How can you sleep like this?"
Gu Fengyan opened his eyes and let Huo Duan put the pillow with his body temperature under him and tucked the corners of the quilt in again and again.
He was happy to be served, with a smile on his lips, but suddenly he remembered something important and hurriedly grabbed Huo Duan's hand, "Mr. Huo...there is something I need to tell you."
"What's the matter?" Huo Duan stared at Gu Fengyan's hand that was holding his.
Gu Fengyan looked away, a little embarrassed, "Well... Mr. Liang and my father came into our room last night. I'm afraid they will ask you why we still sleep in separate beds. You should decide how to deal with it."
Father Huo usually doesn't enter their room, probably because he thinks they sleep together, but after last night, he probably knows everything.
He didn't ask at that time because Huo Duan was sick and couldn't take care of him. But now that he realized it, he knew he could not escape anymore.
Huo Duan just realized this problem. He couldn't help but feel his scalp tingling when he thought about how Huo's father usually disliked him.
"Living under the same roof, you can't hide things... I'll think about it, you should go to bed quickly." Huo Duan turned his back to Gu Fengyan and began to change his clothes.
At worst, they could just say that he had made Gu Fengyan angry and was driven away. Father Huo would definitely not ask too much about the affairs between the young couple.
Gu Fengyan heard this and smiled with the back of his hand covering his eyes, "Why don't you move in and sleep here, so that people won't gossip about you."
Huo Duan turned his head and asked, "Are you serious?"
"Of course, we are husband and wife, we can't always be like this." Gu Fengyan tilted his head and smiled, his black hair spread on the pillow, which set off his jade-like skin.
Gu Fengyan thought simply that Huo Duan and he, both of them were men with modern ideas underneath their skins... They couldn't give Huo's father a grandson, but they could still sleep in the same bed with him.
At worst, we can just say that he and Huo Duan are infertile.
In short, let the elderly rest assured first.
However, Huo Duan's heart was beating so fast that he could only see his smooth curves and the small mole on his earlobe that was burning red.
Huo Duan put on his clothes and covered Gu Fengyan with a quilt. He stared at him for a long time before walking out dazed.
In the yard, Father Huo was lifting the oilcloth to let the fresh herbs soaked with water dry. The old man was trembling, which made people feel terrified.
"Dad, let me do it." Huo Duan hurried forward to help.
Father Huo folded the oilcloth and glanced at Huo Duan, "Why are you getting up at this time? Is Brother Yan asleep?"
Huo Duan was puzzled. Father Huo didn't even ask him about the fact that he and Gu Fengyan slept in separate beds?
"Yes." He nodded.
Seeing his absent-minded look, Huo's father said angrily, "Alas! What can I say about you... Yan'er ran to the mountain in the dark to pick herbs for you in such a heavy rain last night. What do you think he would do if something unexpected happened?!"
Huo Duan was stunned.
What...why didn't Gu Fengyan mention this?
The forest on the mountain was so deep that even a man would be scared to go up the mountain during the day. But Gu Fengyan actually ran up the mountain in the middle of the night just for him.
"I'm afraid he also stayed by your side all night long, right?" Father Huo saw that he finally showed some reaction, and continued, "Brother Yan used to treat you badly, but you can see how he is now. You are a man, and if you like someone, you should take action... Why are you still waiting for a man like him to take the initiative?"
Father Huo was not one to interfere too much in the affairs between his son and daughter-in-law, so when he entered the room last night he found out that his son and daughter-in-law had been married for half a year and they were still innocent and had never even slept in the same bed.
How can this be possible?
I couldn't help feeling anxious, but I couldn't understand the two of them. Judging from the look on Yan'er's face, he must like his own son, needless to say.
But how come the two of them...
"Oh!" As he thought about it, Father Huo sighed again.
Out of sight, out of mind. He hobbled towards the kitchen with his cane, "That's all I have to say. Anyway, an old man like me can't control your affairs..."
Huo Duan responded blankly behind him, his mind was filled with darkness and the image of Gu Fengyan groping around in the heavy rain.
It was so dark, he must have been extremely scared at that time.
…
Gu Fengyan didn’t sleep for long. His body had already gotten used to it and sleeping for too long would make him uncomfortable.
At about the end of the day, he opened his eyes.
"Awake?" A smiling voice came from the bedside.
Gu Fengyan was frightened and shivered. He turned his head and saw Huo Duan sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at him with a weird smile.
He almost blurted out a dirty word, but managed to hold it back. He looked at Huo Duan and asked tentatively, "Mr. Huo, are you okay?"
Huo Duan stopped smiling and stood up. "I'm fine. I came to wake you up. The sun is out now. I've packed up some herbs. We can prepare them after dinner."
Gu Fengyan pushed open the window with one hand and sat up on the bed with the other hand. It was indeed bright outside the window. The winnowing basket in the yard was filled with medicinal herbs that Huo Duan had sorted and cut. Some of them were untouched, probably because he didn't know how to cook them.
"Okay, I'll get up right away," he began to put on his clothes, paused and asked, "Dad didn't make things difficult for you, did he?"
Before he went to sleep, he guessed that Huo's father might think that the two had had a quarrel, and that Huo Duan had provoked him and was kicked out of bed.
Probably he won't be treated well.
"Of course I don't have one," Huo Duan said in a miserable tone, "My father beat me up and asked me what was wrong with me. I've been married to this man for more than half a year, but I don't even have a child. If I don't have another one, he'll kick me out and make me sleep in a doghouse."
Gu Fengyan knew he was talking nonsense and most likely it was nothing.
"You're talking nonsense. Who will raise the baby? When you go back, I'll be a single father." Gu Fengyan scolded with a smile.
No one took Huo Duan's words seriously.
"Let's not talk about this useless stuff. I'll go prepare lunch. Mr. Huo, please come and give me a hand after you've cleaned up..." He walked out of the house and said to Huo Duan.
It was an unintentional remark, but Huo Duan froze in place after hearing it... He had already forgotten that he had to go back after completing the task assigned by the system.
If the relationship between the two really changes, what should Gu Fengyan do then?
How could he bear to do that?
