Chapter 2 Helpless Entrustment
In the hospital lobby , visiting hours had passed. He Shu put on his raincoat, carried his lunch box, and looked at the heavy rain outside the door. His mind was filled with his mother's face that was becoming more and more haggard day by day.
"He Shu!" A middle-aged man in a white coat walked over. He was Qi Yue's attending physician.
"Doctor Luo." He Shu turned around and greeted him politely.
"Have you eaten?" Doctor Luo patted He Shu's thin shoulders. Everyone in the hospital had seen He Shu's performance during this period of time. This child was so sensible and mature that it made people feel sorry for him.
"I've eaten, Dr. Luo. Is there anything I can help you with? Is it my mother..." He Shu suddenly felt a little nervous. Although he had dealt with Dr. Luo many times, he was still afraid that he would say something bad every time he saw him.
"Your mother's illness can't be delayed any longer. She needs a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible. While waiting for a match, you need to prepare at least 300,000 yuan. This way, once there is a suitable bone marrow source for your mother, we can perform the surgery immediately."
Dr. Luo frowned, "He Shu, is there any adult in your family who can come over?"
"Doctor Luo, there are only me and my mother in my family. My mother is sick now. Please don't tell her about these things. I will find a way to get the money."
"But what can you do as a child?" Doctor Luo shook his head: "Besides, He Shu, I hope you are mentally prepared..."
"I understand, Dr. Luo. I will definitely find a way to get the money, and you will definitely find a way to save my mother, right?"
He Shu raised his head with red eyes and stared at Dr. Luo. Dr. Luo swallowed the last half of his words and nodded: "I will do my best , kid."
…
"Students, please be quiet." Li Mei came to the classroom before class started and asked, "Does anyone know where He Shu's home is?"
"I don't know."
"It seems to be on Old North Street. I saw him walking that way after school."
The students in the classroom started chattering, but no one knew the exact location.
Li Mei sighed inwardly. This He Shu was usually quiet in class and hadn't come to school for two days. She couldn't get through to his mother's cell phone number that she had kept on file, and she didn't know where he lived. How could she find him?
After finishing the class with a worried look on her face, Li Mei just returned to the office when she saw Xia Miao, a very good student in the class, following her in.
"Teacher, I think I know where He Shu lives. I once saw him enter the old building facing the street opposite the old station, but I don't know the exact location."
When Li Mei heard this, she smiled and said, "It will be easy to find him now that you know which building he is. I will go to his house after school today. Thank you, Miaomiao."
Xia Miao nodded: "No need to thank you, teacher. I'll go back now."
After work, Li Mei rode her electric scooter to the place Xia Miao mentioned.
I asked the old man who was playing chess downstairs and found out that He Shu lived on the third floor.
After knocking on the door for a long time, no one in He Shu's house opened the door, but an auntie from the opposite door came out and asked, "Who are you looking for?"
"Hello, I'm Teacher He Shu. Do you know where their family has gone?"
"Oh, teacher? Xiaoshu's mother is sick. She should be in the hospital."
"Sick? Is it serious? He Shu hasn't been to school for two days."
Seeing that the teacher didn't know, the auntie immediately became interested in gossiping and whispered to Li Mei, "I heard that she has a terminal illness, it seems to be a blood disease, and she won't live long without a bone marrow transplant. A few days ago, her son wanted to sell the house, but people saw that he was just a child, so who would dare to buy it?"
Li Mei looked at the aunt with a pouty face and felt very disliked for people who watched other people's fun. But she was a teacher after all, so she thanked the aunt for the information. After finding out who was in the hospital, she hurried downstairs.
When she arrived at the First Municipal Hospital, Li Mei bought a fruit basket at the door and went directly to the emergency department.
One of her elementary school classmates works as a doctor in the emergency room.
After explaining the situation, Li Mei's classmates took her to the hematology department for inquiries, and finally saw He Shu in the corridor of the inpatient department.
"Teacher Li?" He Shu held a basin of water and a towel and looked at Li Mei, his eyes full of surprise.
Li Mei originally wanted to say something to He Shu about not going to school, but when she saw him, she was speechless.
"I heard your mother is sick, teacher came to see her."
"Thank you, teacher. My mother is in this room." He Shu led Li Mei into the ward and saw Qi Yue, who was lying on the bed, skinny.
"The teacher is here." Qi Yue was weaker than the previous two days. He struggled to get up, but he couldn't.
"Hurry up and lie down. I just heard that you were sick. I didn't bring anything with me, so I bought you some fruit."
"I'm sorry for the expense. Thank you, teacher. He Shu, please pour me a glass of water quickly." Qi Yue's voice was also very weak and small.
He Shu obediently took a disposable cup and poured a cup of hot water he had just fetched: "Teacher, the water is a little hot."
"Okay, thank you." Li Mei looked at the child in front of her. He was no longer as silent as he was at school, but now looked well-behaved.
While her mother was talking to him, he sat quietly on the other side, applying a hot towel to the purple and blue needle holes on Qi Yue's arm.
"He Shu, mom is going to talk to the teacher. You've been with me all day. Go play outside for a while."
"Then I'll go wash the clothes and be back soon." He Shu looked at Li Mei, took out Qi Yue's changed clothes and basin from under the bed and went out.
"He Shu is a really sensible child." Li Mei sighed.
A cold, withered hand reached out to her. Li Mei quickly shook it and said, "Teacher, I have delayed the child's study. No matter how I persuaded him, he refused to go to school these past two days."
"I know he's afraid that if he leaves, he won't be able to see me anymore."
"Don't think like that. He Shu is a smart kid. You don't have to worry about his grades. Let him stay with you these few days. I will ask for leave from school for him. I will help him catch up on the lessons he missed later. Don't worry, just take good care of yourself." Li Mei comforted him.
"Teacher, I don't know who to ask. Since you are here, I will shamelessly ask you to take care of He Shu in school if I am not here. This child is introverted and won't talk to anyone except me. I am afraid that he will..."
Qi Yue choked up. She hated herself for not having a good body to raise her child. She also hated herself for not living up to her expectations and that her marriage broke down and she couldn't give her child a complete family.
"Mother He Shu, don't worry. I will take good care of He Shu even if you don't tell me. But don't be so pessimistic. Nowadays, medicine is advanced and there is hope that any disease can be cured."
Qi Yue smiled. She had already prepared for death. Although she was reluctant to leave her son, living like this would also be a burden to her child.
Qi Yue chatted with Li Mei for half an hour. When He Shu came back, Li Mei had left. He didn't know what the teacher talked about with his mother.
Looking at his mother's expression, He Shu felt relieved that she didn't seem angry because he skipped school.
When sorting out the fruit basket brought by Li Mei, He Shu found two hundred yuan in it.
After taking a look at his mother who was resting with her eyes closed, He Shu quietly hid the money in his trouser pocket.
