Chapter 17 I Come to Land
If an airline employs foreign pilots, it is likely that they will be equipped with an English version of the manual. However, Xu Cang did not know the situation of Feiyu Airlines, so he was not sure whether there was an English version of the manual.
Generally speaking, airlines' English manuals are taken directly from Boeing and are basically identical .
“English manual?” The co-pilot said, “Yes, yes, yes!”
After saying yes three times in a row, the co-pilot pointed to the slot under the trim wheel on the captain's side and said, "Brother, check if there is any on your side."
The co-pilot knows more about this kind of "trivial matters".
"On my side?" The captain really didn't know that the English manual would be with him. Since becoming a captain, he no longer cared about these things.
I looked down and saw a QRH in the place the co-pilot pointed out. I took it out and took a look. It was in English, so I started flipping through it.
But after flipping through it for a while, he became increasingly embarrassed and simply handed it to the co-pilot: "Look for it."
Unlike most future pilots who have ICAO4 English proficiency, in this era, if you don’t fly international flights, basically no one will take the initiative to learn English. If you are a poor student before flying, then you will probably be like this for the rest of your life. Obviously, this captain is one of those who don’t fly international flights.
The co-pilot did recognize some of them, and after a little time, he actually found the chapter on airborne starting. However, the co-pilot just glanced at it, then glanced back at Xu Cang without leaving a trace, and then spread out the checklist to show the captain: "Brother, it's really there!"
The captain looked at the position where the first officer was pointing, and saw a sentence in English: "Oil quantity indication as low as zero is normal if windmilling N2 RPM is below approximately 8%."
The captain's English was very poor, but he could understand some simple words in this sentence and roughly guess what they meant.
"He was right!" The captain waved his hand and asked the co-pilot to take back the checklist, his heart was already in turmoil. He was sure that even many pilots with ICAO4 did not know this note, because they could not read the English version of the manual.
Although Xu Cang, who was sitting in the back, could not see clearly whether the sentence was written where the co-pilot was pointing, he could tell from the expressions of the captain and co-pilot that it was written there.
Xu Cang was filled with emotion at this scene. The current domestic civil aviation is really perfunctory. It's okay to translate inaccurately, but it's also directly missing translations. It's amazing.
With the support of the plain text, the captain did not hesitate and immediately attempted an air start.
According to the checklist, the right side components were closed and the engine was started with cross-bleed. At this time, the thrust of the No. 1 engine was stabilized at more than 70, and the pipeline pressure was always maintained at more than 40. For cross-bleed, this pipeline pressure was absolutely sufficient.
After confirming that the pressure met the requirements, the co-pilot, under the captain's instruction, placed the start switch of the No. 2 engine in the ground position, and then began to wait for the N2 speed to increase.
After the N2 speed exceeded 11%, the captain lifted the starting handle of the No. 2 engine to slow speed, and the two men started timing at the same time, both of them looking at the EGT indicator.
At this time, the plane was at a very low altitude, there was no precipitation around, and the engine had not been turned off for long. Logically, if it could be restarted under such circumstances, it should respond quickly without waiting for a long time.
However, after 30 seconds, EGT did not react at all. Even though Xu Cang was prepared, he still showed disappointment when he saw it with his own eyes.
The EGT did not rise within 30 seconds, so the captain could only cut off the engine start handle again in frustration. The co-pilot asked, "Do you want to do it again?"
This time the captain accepted his fate quickly and waved his hand: " No need , it's not like the engine has been turned off for more than an hour, there's no need to try again."
For engines that have been off for more than an hour, it is likely that they will need to be started multiple times. Obviously, they are not in this category, and there is no point in repeating it, except to add to their negative emotions of disappointment again and again.
The captain turned the heading knob again and said, "Two more turns, let's do the 'single engine landing' checklist, we're going to land."
Obviously, the captain had accepted the outcome of a single-engine landing, no matter how unwilling he was to face it.
The "Single Engine Landing" checklist was completed quickly, mainly the configuration of flap 15 landing and the opening of the proximity flap inhibition switch. At this time, the entire local airspace was open to them, and there was no need for much preparation, just a five-side extension line.
Upon learning that the crew had decided to re-approach, the tower control room became busy, and firefighting and medical support were all mobilized.
"Feiyu 6321, if possible, could you wait in the air for ten minutes? We need to ensure that ground support is in place." When the crew was ready and preparing to turn to the third side, the tower control suddenly requested the crew to wait in the air.
There was no way. Jianchuan Airport had not encountered such a serious special situation for a long time, so long that the firefighting and medical forces, which were responsible for emergency rescue, had become slow to respond. The actual speed of deployment was much slower than expected. In order to ensure that the support force was waiting nearby when the plane landed, the airport could only hope that the crew would wait in the air.
To be honest, holding with one engine should not be a particularly excessive request. Of course, if the crew who declared an emergency insisted on landing immediately, the airport could not stop them.
The captain was not too worried. Waiting for another ten minutes was not unacceptable. What really worried him was the landing itself.
How nervous was the captain? He had confirmed the wind direction and speed with the controller three times since he decided to return to the airport. This frequency was obviously abnormal. Perhaps influenced by the captain, the co-pilot's back was straight and stiff, and his whole body was like a stretched bowstring, as if a little more pressure would break it.
This is not a good sign!
Xu Cang sat in the back, and he could feel the heavy atmosphere in the cockpit through his pores. If it were normal, Xu Cang would not care at all, after all, his real identity was a passenger, not a crew member.
However, if the captain, whose body was already stiff as a rock due to tension, messed up the landing, he couldn't escape. He couldn't hope for a second rebirth.
In the strange atmosphere, the captain suddenly heard a sentence from behind and was startled.
"Captain, if you don't mind, can you let me land?" Xu Cang said seriously.
The captain didn't know if he was too nervous and his reaction was slow. He turned his head and asked, "What did you say?"
Xu Cang raised his voice slightly and said seriously: "I mean... I'll do the landing!"
