Chapter 10 Steven Connor
Reese waited patiently for Nie Chuan for more than ten seconds, and finally turned sideways and fastened the seat belt for Nie Chuan.
When he lowered his head towards him, Nie Chuan could clearly see his neck, which had a beauty completely different from the slenderness of a woman's.
It was full of tension, as if it was about to break Nie Chuan's sight at any time.
Nie Chuan took a breath without making a sound and retracted his gaze.
They drove out of the school. Nie Chuan was very nervous along the way. He really wanted to ask Reese where he was taking him.
Could it be that they went to some remote place and destroyed the body?
On the way from the school to the city, the scenery was similar. Nie Chuan soon began to feel sleepy and fell asleep leaning against the car window.
The sunlight at noon was a bit dazzling. Nie Chuan pursed his lips. In a daze, it seemed as if a hand reached out and knocked down the sun visor in front of him. Nie Chuan fell asleep comfortably.
Not long into his sleep, his stomach began to growl, and Reese parked the car at a fast food restaurant on the side of the road.
"Get off and eat something."
Nie Chuan looked again and found that they were actually on the road!
Is this the rhythm that is going to happen?
Nie Chuan now has nowhere to escape to!
Nie Chuan could only follow Reese into the fast food restaurant on the side of the road.
While waiting in line to order, Reese looked down and asked, "What do you want to eat?"
Nie Chuan originally wanted to order one at random and didn't want Reese to wait for him to choose, but he didn't expect Reese to say, "Look carefully before you choose. Once you've chosen, you must finish it."
Nie Chuan suddenly felt as if the other person was saying, "You have to finish the path you have chosen even if you have to kneel down."
Nearly twenty seconds had passed and the waiter taking the order was getting a little impatient, but Reese was still waiting patiently.
"That...cheese, bacon, chicken burger with a coke."
He also wants some lemon chicken nuggets...
"Can you eat enough?" Reese raised his eyebrows.
"Lemon chicken nuggets." Nie Chuan suddenly felt like he had really become a child in front of Reese.
When they returned to the table with their plates, Nie Chuan began to eat in silence.
He took a bite of the burger and the cheese squeezed out and remained on his cheek.
Just as Nie Chuan was about to wipe it with his hand, a napkin was pressed against his face by the person opposite him.
When Nie Chuan raised his eyes, he saw Reese lowering his eyes slightly and opening his mouth to bite the hamburger.
He could see the tip of his tongue looming between his lips, but the scene passed quickly as Reese chewed his burger slowly and tore open the ketchup packet.
I don’t know why, but this extremely ordinary action seems very impressive to Nie Chuan.
Although the adjective "grand" is a bit strange to use here.
After finishing the burger and eating only half of the lemon chicken nuggets, Nie Chuan was full. But he remembered Reese's words "eat it after you choose it" and felt a lot of pressure, so he could only force himself to eat two more pieces.
"You eat so much, be careful you might throw up in the car later."
Reese spoke coldly, and Nie Chuan's eyes widened.
So it doesn't have to be finished?
Reese stood up, and Nie Chuan followed reluctantly.
When he passed by a mother holding a child, he saw her unwrapping the chocolate wrapper and putting the candy into the child's mouth, and he suddenly felt extremely sad.
He seemed to have not eaten chocolate for two days. No wonder his life always felt so incomplete.
Reese put his hands in his pockets, stopped and turned around, looking at Nie Chuan who looked like he was going to swallow someone else's child, and raised his eyebrows slightly: "Let's go."
Due to Reese's fighting power, Nie Chuan had no choice but to follow.
When they returned to the Land Rover, Reese suddenly reached out and took out a bag from the back seat. When he opened it, there was a small bag of chocolate beans inside.
Although the bag had been opened, Nie Chuan still felt very surprised: "You're giving it to me?"
"Um."
They were on the road again.
Nie Chuan smiled happily while holding a piece of chocolate bean in his mouth.
Reese was driving, and when he looked at the rearview mirror, his eyes happened to pass over Nie Chuan.
He pulled the corners of his lips slightly and said, "Kid."
They arrived at a nearby city. Reese drove the car into a hospital. After parking the car, he took Nie Chuan to walk in the hospital courtyard.
The sunlight is very good today and many patients come out for a walk.
Sitting on a bench not far away was a young boy listening to music. He was wearing a baseball cap, had a chocolate complexion, and moved his chin in time with the rhythm.
Nie Chuan noticed that Reese was just looking at him.
"His name is Steven Connor. He was once a regular player on our UDK basketball team and the best point guard on our team."
"he is sick?"
"Well, it's cancer. He's here getting chemo."
"Oh..." Nie Chuan didn't know what to say for a moment. Normally he should say "I'm sorry", but that didn't make any sense.
"Carlo, Ewing and Montenegro didn't know Connor's condition," Reese said. "They just thought Connor gave up basketball and went to another country with his parents."
"Why?" Nie Chuan didn't understand.
"Because Connor is so outstanding and has such a good understanding with us. So, if he leaves the court because of cancer, then in everyone's heart, he will be the best and most perfect, and no one can replace him emotionally. Carlo and others will find it difficult to accept another point guard, no matter how good the other party is. But if Connor voluntarily gives up basketball, it will be different. Everyone will want to find another person to prove to him that even without you, we can still be excellent."
"So he is here alone, and Carlo, Ewing and Montenegro have never come to see him?"
"Yes. So for me, Connor's position will eventually be replaced by someone else. But if this is destined, I hope that this person, even if he is not the best and most capable, at least cherishes the position left by Connor more than anyone else."
At that moment, Nie Chuan's heart was filled with joy.
"Carlo mentioned you in his K. After Connor read it, he contacted me and said he really wanted to meet you."
Nie Chuan took a step back, frowned and looked at Reese seriously: "But I don't think I should go to see him. He wants to see someone who can be trusted by his teammates, not me. I'm not that kind of person at all. I will disappoint him."
"He doesn't want to see another self. Maybe he just wants someone to talk to him about basketball. If it were me, he wouldn't talk to me about basketball." Riss paused, then said, "It's okay if you don't want to go. I'll go talk to him and then take you back to school."
"No... I'll go."
"You don't need to feel sorry for Connor."
"He is stronger than so many people. He doesn't need sympathy from others."
Nie Chuan took a breath, walked towards Connor, and came in front of him.
At this moment, Connor was holding an iPad in his hand and had started a basketball game, while Nie Chuan sat quietly beside him and watched the game with him for more than ten minutes.
When Connor turned around and saw Nie Chuan, he couldn't help but be shocked: "Oh, my God!"
"I'm sorry to scare you, I'm Nie Chuan. Reese brought me here, he said you wanted to meet me."
Connor has big eyes and his teeth look very white against his skin color, and his smile makes people feel warm.
"Oh! You are Alan, right? Hello, I'm Connor!"
Although Nie Chuan was still not used to people calling him by his English name, he nodded.
The two of them quickly started chatting, and when Connor spoke quickly, Nie Chuan could hardly keep up, especially some basketball terms, which were even more unfamiliar to him.
Connor was gesticulating with his hands, and Nie Chuan vaguely understood what he was doing but could not fully comprehend it until Reese, who was standing not far away and watching them, threw a basketball over.
Connor was extremely excited when he touched the basketball, and he performed a very beautiful and continuous crossover dribble in front of Nie Chuan.
That sense of rhythm seemed to be knocking on Nie Chuan's brain.
"Look, that's it!"
Nie Chuan was infected by Connor's joy of touching the basketball. He took the ball and followed Connor to practice his movements.
At first, Nie Chuan's movements were clumsy, but they became faster and more flexible.
Connor clapped his hands and said in rhythm: "Yes! Yes! That's it! Your body will remember! When your body remembers, no one can stop you!"
Maybe Connor was more approachable than Reese, or maybe the skills Connor showed Nie Chuan were too attractive, so Nie Chuan stayed with Connor and learned dribbling from him for two or three hours. Whether it was McGrady's crossover or Marbury's hip-down and behind-the-back double-change dribbling, these moves that looked smooth and gorgeous in the NBA were deciphered and shown to Nie Chuan, and became ordinary as if they were decoded.
"Hey! It's interesting, isn't it, Alan?" Connor asked with a smile.
"It's really interesting!" After Nie Chuan answered subconsciously, he found that something had changed.
"Do you know why I like basketball?" Connor asked.
Nie Chuan shook his head.
"Because there are countless combinations. You can do a cross-over dribble to shake your opponent, or you can do a cross-over dribble to pass the opponent behind the back. All defenders are different doors, and you are the key to open all the doors. There is nothing you can't do, only what you can't think of."
Nie Chuan saw a world in Connor's eyes that he didn't know. It was distant, gorgeous, and unpredictable.
"When you pass through door after door, you will feel like you are burning, from your toes to your fingertips, from your fingertips to the ends of your hair, everything is boiling. Nothing can restrict you, nothing can suppress you, that is infinite possibility."
Nie Chuan stood there, motionless.
"I know that not everyone loves basketball as much as I do. But I want to tell you that whether it's Reese, Carlo, Ewing or Montenegro, they are really great players and teammates. When you find that the sky above your head is blocked, Carlo and Montenegro will tear open a bright light for you. When you find that you can't break through, Reese can always open up a wider space for you. When you think the basket is far away from you, Ewing will stand behind you and jump up, and shoot a long-range three-pointer to seal the game. I love the feeling of being with them."
Connor's eyes turned red.
Nie Chuan seemed to hear the audience's excited shouts, the sound of sneakers rubbing against the ground, and the impact of the basketball on the ground in harmony with the rhythm of his heart.
