Chapter 10 If I leave, we will never meet again
There is no wound in this world that time cannot heal.
If so, it just means the time has not been long enough.
People always need to go through some things to learn to grow.
When Xu Meng'er turned around, she said to me, Cun Zhiwei, don't always think that you are the most miserable person in the world. In fact, you just can't see your own happiness.
After my mother passed away, I never thought that happiness would come to me, let alone hope for it. But when she said it, my heart became clearer. The greatest happiness in the world is that the person you love also loves you. Although love is no longer there, at least I have had it.
After Xu Meng'er left, Shi Shuxia hurried back to the dormitory and asked me anxiously what had happened and whether I had had a quarrel with Xu Meng'er.
I looked at her and smiled. Isn't this also part of happiness?
Thinking of this, I felt that all this was not so difficult anymore. I hugged Shi Shuxia, who had a confused look on her face, and expressed my gratitude. I also told myself that everything would start over again and would be fine.
And I will continue to be happy.
My life returned to the way it was before. I went to class, went home after class, worked, and returned to the dormitory every day. With Shi Shuxia's company, this routine was not so painful. But sometimes I would still stare out the window in a daze. I seemed to see Yan Wenbo , smiling at me dimly.
Occasionally we would meet on campus, and he always looked like he wanted to say something but hesitated. I would pretend not to care and smile at him as a greeting, then leave, pretending that I had completely forgotten this boy.
Sister Su said that there is no wound in this world that cannot be healed by time. If there is, it only means that the time is not long enough.
I'm trying to let time heal all this, and I think it may take a long time.
However, Yan Wenbo seemed to want to speed up everything. I met him one time when I was at work.
Just like before, he liked to sit by the window. The store was well air-conditioned, and when the sunlight came in through the curtains , it was warm and very comfortable.
In the past, he would always lazily lie on the table, order a cup of coffee, and lazily look at me busying myself through the mist. When I turned around, he would smile at me, very gently.
Familiar places and scenes always remind people of the familiar past, and the same is true now.
I was wiping the table carelessly, and Xiao Chen came over and patted my shoulder: "Sister Su asked you to go to the counter, I will handle this."
I nodded, fled back to the counter, turned my back to Yan Wenbo, and felt very complicated. I had to admit that I still had feelings for this boy, and I also had to admit that I couldn't ignore Xu Meng'er's words. What Yan Wenbo did was to step hard on my bottom line and crush all possibilities between us.
He sat there until I got off work, without even touching a cup of coffee, and only drank a little lemonade. After I left, he followed me out and grabbed my arm: "Weiwei, can you talk to me? I really don't want to lose you like this."
I tried to break free from his grip, but found that my arm was held so tightly that I couldn't break free. I stood face to face with him, looking at his sad face, feeling a little irritated. I really wanted to ask him, when I was being bullied by those two disgusting men, was he standing outside the door waiting for the opportunity? Was he just listening there and not doing anything?
He dragged me, who was struggling, into a nearby alley, pinned me in a corner, and looked down at me.
"Yan Wenbo, we've broken up. You've always been a straightforward person. Once we break up, it's over. There's no going back. Can't we just part ways in peace?" When we were face to face and very close to each other, I couldn't help but associate the images of those two men with him. My chest was churning, as if I would vomit immediately.
"Weiwei, I can tell from your expression that you still like me. Can you give me another chance? I promise to never doubt you again and never have any contact with Xu Meng'er again. I promise to only like and love you in this life. I beg you to give me another chance, I can't leave you!" Yan Wenbo grabbed me, almost crying.
This kind of plot seems to have been seen a lot in idol dramas. Haha, is there anything in this world that cannot live without someone? If there really is, we wouldn't have been in a cold war for so long before, and there wouldn't have been so many things happening between him and Xu Meng'er during the cold war.
Seeing him like this, I suddenly realized that the so-called deep love is nothing but self-deception.
"Yan Wenbo, let go. I really don't want our relationship to end in a mess. There's no such thing as you can't live without the other. Turn around and leave everyone with a beautiful life, isn't that good?" I said a little tiredly.
"It exists! If you don't believe me, I'll jump into the middle of the road right now!" As he said that, he wanted to run onto the road. I held on to him tightly from behind and he pulled me quite far away.
I couldn't imagine that this unreasonable boy in front of me was the boy I once liked so much. He was crazy and angry, and there was no sunshine in him at all.
"That's enough! Yan Wenbo, what do you want? We broke up! Don't you understand? Do you have to make me tell you everything before you realize that we can't go back?" I yelled at him, and the tight string in my heart finally broke. "You keep saying that you love me and don't want to lose me. Have you ever thought about all this when you were working with Ren Xiaoqi? Have you ever thought about this when you were outside listening to me being humiliated by two men? Do you think that after you act like a hero saving a beautiful woman, I will definitely be moved and will definitely reconcile with you? Impossible, even if this didn't happen, I would never come back to you. From the moment you and my roommate had an unclear relationship, we were completely over."
He stood there woodenly, looking at me in disbelief, his voice choked with sobs: "You...you...know everything?"
"I understand, so can you let me leave? I don't want to be surrounded by people like an orangutan in a zoo, and I don't want to continue watching your miserable drama." I said with a determined heart.
"No... I don't want you to leave me, I don't want to!" Yan Wenbo did not retreat, but rushed over and hugged me tightly. No matter how I shouted or struggled, he refused to let go.
There were already people at the entrance of the alley who had heard the noise and came to watch, and some curious people had already turned on their phones to record the scene.
My mentality was a little broken, and I started to fight him madly, trying to make him let me go.
"Yan Wenbo, let me go!"
"No! I know if I let you go I'll really leave me!"
"Let me go!" My mind went blank and I used my hands and feet to hit him again and again. I don't know how many times I hit him but he refused to let me go.
When I stopped, the police were standing in front of us. They pulled us apart while we were still fighting. Only then did I notice that there , and there was a bloody mark on his face from my ring.
The ring was bought when I went out with Shi Shuxia a few days ago. It’s not expensive, but it’s a very cute version of the same style.
Maybe passers-by saw us fighting so violently and called the police. When I came to my senses, we were already sitting in the police station. Two uniformed policemen were sitting in front of us, taking notes with pens in their hands and asking questions about our name, age, parents, etc.
I turned my head and glanced at Yan Wenbo. He was sitting not far from me, with his head down and not saying a word. The wound on his face was bloody, which was particularly shocking on his fair face.
"Uncle policeman, can you... help him treat his wound first?" I asked in a low voice.
The policeman looked up at me, waved a female police officer over, explained a few things, and then asked me: "If you were worried, why did you hit me so hard? Young lovers shouldn't fight even if they are angry!"
"We are not a couple," I replied.
He was stunned for a moment.
I continued, “We’ve broken up.”
Yes, we have broken up, the kind of breakup where there is no possibility of getting back together.
After taking the statement, the police said that this kind of emotional dispute still needs us to negotiate personally. As long as the other party does not insist on letting me go, I will not be detained. If the other party refuses to let me go, then I may have a criminal record. After all, many people have seen me beating him, and some kind-hearted people even recorded the video and posted it online, but they only put a very thin code on it, so acquaintances can still see it.
The police’s meaning was very clear. They asked me to go talk to Yan Wenbo.
We were sitting on the same bench. I tilted my head to look at him, and he kept his head down without saying a word.
I raised my head, leaned back in my chair and sighed. Let it be a record. Anyway, no one cares whether I have such a criminal record or not. I just can't do such a thing as asking him for help.
"I will not pursue this matter further. Can we go back now?" Yan Wenbo suddenly stood up and said to the police.
Before the police could say anything, a sharp female voice came from far away, irritating the eardrums. She screamed: "Who beat you like this? Tell mom quickly, mom will make him pay for it."
It turned out to be Yan Wenbo’s mother!
"Comrade police, can I take my son to get his injuries checked? How dare you beat my son like this? I will never let him off easily !" Yan's mother stared at the police excitedly and asked, "Who beat my son like this? Who is it?"
The policeman looked at me helplessly and did not answer.
Sometimes there is no need to answer at all, a look is enough. Before I raised my head and stood up, Mother Yan was already standing in front of me. Her huge figure blocked all my sight, and I could only see a piece of black in front of my eyes. She stared down at me, looking down on everyone.
It is always impolite to talk to elders like this. I barely stood up from the gap between her and the chair and stood face to face with Mother Yan. She was half a head shorter than me, but she had more dominance than me.
"You are the one who hurt my son?" She glared at me angrily.
"Auntie, I'm sorry, I..." I really didn't know how to explain. Should I say it wasn't intentional? I did hit her, and it wasn't just a small fight where I pushed her carelessly. Should I say it was intentional? I'd probably get a beating from Yan's mother!
In any case, it's all my fault, and I do feel very sorry for Yan Wenbo, especially the scratch on the ring. I don't know if it can disappear over time. What should I do if it leaves a scar?
"Don't explain yourself and me, just tell me whether it was you who hit him," she asked.
I nodded.
"I've never seen a girl like you. You beat a boy like this in public. Look at his face. How will you be responsible if he gets a scar?" She accused me of all kinds of things. Because it was a private matter, she didn't do anything. No one around dared to persuade her. "Your name is Cun Zhiwei, right? I've heard of you. I heard that you don't have a good reputation in school. I thought you were just a person who didn't behave properly. I didn't expect that you like to beat people. Girls nowadays really don't know how their parents taught them."
"Auntie, you can scold me, but please don't mention my parents, okay?" My parents are my Achilles' heel and I don't want anyone to mention them.
"What's wrong with talking about your parents giving birth to you and raising you like this? Where are your parents?" She looked around and shouted, "Where are Cun Zhiwei's parents? Let me see, what kind of parents can raise their daughter like this? Where are they? Are they afraid to show up or are you born by a mother but not raised by a mother, which is why you have become like this?"
I turned to Yan Wenbo for help. I couldn't argue with an elder in public, so I just hoped that Yan Wenbo could persuade his mother.
He avoided my eyes and said nothing.
The cold winter wind blew in my heart, taking away all the heat. I was cold all over as I watched the person in front of me swearing at me. A ray of sunlight leaked out, and I could clearly see the arc of his saliva splashing.
"Auntie, if you really want to see my parents, here!" I pointed to the ground, "They are over there."
She was stunned for a moment, and then after she understood what I was saying, she started another round of endless abuse. Finally, a female police officer came in and saw all this, and stepped forward to stop her, and the noise finally left my ears.
"Comrade police officer, my request is very simple. I want her to be detained and to pay my son's medical expenses and mental damages of 100,000 yuan. Look at what my son has been beaten into. Look at the wounds on his face. I don't know if there will be scars left. My son is so handsome. It would be so ugly if he had scars." Mother Yan muttered to the police.
When it comes to the final result, the same thing still applies: detention, and 100,000 yuan in medical expenses and compensation for mental damages.
"We have contacted Cun Zhiwei's father and he will be here soon. You can talk to him about the specific compensation." said the policewoman.
"Father? You are really crazy, girl. You even dared to lie to me and say that your parents are dead. You even cursed your own biological parents. It's really..." She stared at me, wishing she could eat me.
When Cun Jiyuan came, I was sitting on a bench, watching Yan Wenbo sitting in front of his mother and being cared for. When I saw him come in, I was stunned for a moment and lowered my head, not knowing how to respond.
We haven't seen each other since the Spring Festival. We would occasionally send each other a text message or two, mostly about things like "Do you have enough money?" and there was very little other contact.
Such a meeting was also beyond our expectations.
He put a thin coat on me, and then I noticed that when I was struggling with Yan Wenbo, the collar of my T-shirt was torn open and it was dirty, probably because it was scratched by the wall of the alley.
"Hello, I'm Cun Zhiwei's father." After seeing me put on my coat, Cun Jiyuan walked up to the policeman and introduced himself.
Hearing his self-introduction, Mother Yan's eyes lit up and she said coldly, "You are the father of that crazy girl."
"Who are you?" Cun Jiyuan probably guessed the other party's identity. He stood up straight, his face a little gloomy because of the word "crazy girl".
"I'm Yan Wenbo's mother. Since you're Cun Zhiwei's father, let's talk about this matter!" Mother Yan sat there, looking aggressive. "Our demands are very simple. First, we want your daughter to be detained. Second, we want her to pay 100,000 yuan for medical expenses and mental damages."
"Paying compensation is no problem, after all, it was my daughter who did the hitting. But as for the detention, do you think we can negotiate it? The child is still young, and if she has a criminal record, it will be bad for her future studies and work." After all, Cun Jiyuan is a man who has seen the world. He was able to quickly suppress his unhappiness and bargain with Yan's mother as if he were negotiating with Party A.
Finally, in the small meeting room arranged by the police, Cun Jiyuan and Yan's mother reached an agreement to pay 50,000 yuan in compensation, and the other party would not pursue the matter. In order to ensure that everything was foolproof, the two borrowed the police station's printer to sign the contract and transferred the money on the spot. I only then noticed that Cun Jiyuan came with a contract, and he had already anticipated that the other party might ask for a high price.
When it comes to negotiation, I admire Cun Jiyuan.
As a father, I still don’t know how to face this.
When they were about to leave, Yan's mother stopped Cun Jiyuan and said, "You can't just focus on making money and neglect your children's education. Go back and educate your daughter well, so that she knows what propriety, righteousness, integrity and shame are, and learns to control her temper."
Cun Jiyuan responded coldly, "My daughter has been well-educated. She doesn't need an outsider to point fingers at her. Instead of pointing fingers at other people's character, why don't you go back and ask your son what he did to make a gentle girl like you beat him and not say a word. You've been here for so long, and you never asked your son why he didn't even dare to fart? If I were you, you'd better shut up and take your son back to ask him about his behavior."
"You! You!" Mother Yan was furious. " What are you talking about? Don't think you can talk to me like this just because you signed the contract. I can tear up this contract and have your daughter detained!"
"You probably only looked at the amount of the money and didn't read the additional terms below, right? I advise you to take a look at it before talking to me about breach of contract. The policeman was there when we signed the contract, so you can ask him to help take a look." After saying this, Cun Jiyuan pulled me away without even turning his head. I only heard the sound of something being thrown behind me. I wonder if Mother Yan will be kept by the police to be questioned about the issue of damaging public property.
When I passed by Yan Wenbo, I stopped for a moment, and he still didn't dare to look up at me.
The last bit of love I had for him evaporated along with her mother's saliva that splashed into the air.
