Chapter 1: Seeing Deer in the Deep Forest 1
If we had never met, where would I be?
Yu Nansheng01
Today is my first day of internship at City Daily in S City. I have been fascinated by the profession of journalist since I was a child. Three years ago, despite my father's opposition, I worked hard to be admitted to the Journalism Department of S University. Now, I have finally taken the first step to realize my dream.
Standing at the door of the editorial office of the newspaper, I took a deep breath and recalled the lines of self-introduction that I had memorized the night before. Just as I was about to push the door open, it suddenly opened and a tall man walked out, and I bumped into him head-on.
I subconsciously said "I'm sorry" several times.
The man just stopped and glanced at me. It seemed like he was just giving me a casual look, but it made me inexplicably nervous.
That kind of gaze seems to be able to see deep into people's hearts, sharp and profound.
He raised an eyebrow and asked, "New here?"
I took a step back a little embarrassedly under his gaze and nodded: "Yes, senior, I'm a new intern. My name is Yu Nansheng."
The man frowned, lowered his head slightly to glance at the watch on his wrist, his eyelids drooped, and his long eyelashes covered his handsome eyes. His profile with a hint of casualness was so beautiful that it was beyond words.
Just when I thought he would follow my words and introduce himself, he suddenly raised his head and glanced at me calmly: "You are late."
I was stunned for a second, and before I could react, the man turned around and walked towards the elevator while adjusting the camera.
His tone was so cold, as if I had a grudge against him.
In the editor-in-chief's office, the air conditioner that was about to retire slowly emitted not-so-cool air. Although I had made sufficient preparations before coming here, I was still a little nervous when I actually faced the editor-in-chief.
After reading my resume, Editor-in-Chief Lin smiled slightly and said, "Yu Nansheng, welcome to become a member of our City Daily. From today on, you will learn from Reporter Shen in the social section."
"Reporter Shen? Is that senior reporter Shen Yuxi?" I couldn't believe my ears.
Long before I came to the newspaper office, I had heard of Shen Yuxi's legend: she started contributing to major paper media in S City at the age of 16, opened her own column in City Daily at the age of 17, and was personally recruited by the president of City Daily at the age of 18, becoming the youngest senior reporter in S City...
Being able to become Shen Yuxi's apprentice right after joining the newspaper was like a pie in the sky for me.
"That's right, it's Shen Yuxi, the 'male god reporter' in the minds of you little girls." Suddenly, a strange male voice interrupted, "I heard that only one intern this year was assigned to his tutelage. If I'm not mistaken, this lucky person is you." The strange man walked into the office and stopped in front of the desk.
"Xiao Yu, this is Han Shao, another ace in the social version." Sister Lin introduced with a smile.
Although I felt uncomfortable being looked at by the senior named Han Shao, I still curled my lips and responded, "Senior Han, hello, I am the new intern Yu Nansheng. I hope you can give me more guidance in the future."
"Little girl, reporter Shen is notoriously difficult to deal with, so you have to be mentally prepared." Han Shao glanced at me with a hint of cunning in his eyes.
"Han Shao, please stop scaring the girl. Xiao Yu, if you don't have any questions, go report to Reporter Shen first."
I nodded, and when I was about to leave, Han Shao stopped me and said, "Girl, he has just left for a mission. Go to the editorial center to get familiar with the environment first. When he comes back, you can report in."
"Understood, Editor-in-Chief, Senior, I'll take my leave now."
My excitement about becoming Shen Yuxi's apprentice was dampened by Han Shao's words, "just out of the house" and "difficult to deal with". Could it be that the man I just bumped into was Shen Yuxi?
The clock pointed to 8 o'clock. It had just rained heavily in S City. The dark clouds gradually dispersed under the breeze. Looking out from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 23rd floor of J Building in the city center, the whole city was shrouded in misty rain. Half of the people in the entire editing center were in an emergency meeting, and the other half were typing on the keyboard. I was sitting in the tea room and browsing Weibo, which made me look out of place in this busy atmosphere.
During the conversation with my colleagues, my guess about the man I bumped into was confirmed - Shen Yuxi, my mentor during my internship. In addition to the adjective "difficult to deal with", I also heard other descriptions of Shen Yuxi from my colleagues, such as "venomous tongue" and "cold-blooded". However, these comments did not make me back off. After all, I came here to realize my dream. As long as it helps me realize my dream, I can handle even the most difficult person.
However, I soon realized how naive my thoughts were at the moment.
I waited for Shen Yuxi in the office for an entire afternoon before he came back. Before I had time to say hello to him, he had already walked into the conference room and had been in a meeting until now.
The door of the conference room was ajar, and from time to time there were sounds of heated discussions coming from inside the door, which made the editors who were rushing to finish their manuscripts in the office inevitably feel annoyed.
"Intern, please close the door of the conference room."
"Okay, okay." Perhaps someone finally sensed my presence, I immediately stood up and walked to the door of the meeting room.
Just as I was about to close the door gently, my nose started to itch and I sneezed suddenly.
"A-choo——" I covered my mouth to lower the volume, but it was too late.
"I plan to treat this case from..." The explanation stopped abruptly, and everyone present looked at me, the uninvited guest.
"Sorry to bother you." I stood there awkwardly, and when I saw that the person who was explaining just now was Shen Yuxi, I couldn't help but shudder.
I thought I would be glared at by this man again, but he just glanced at me calmly and said, "Yu Nansheng, tell me what you think about the free book giveaway in Jiangcheng District."
"Me?" I was stunned when my name was suddenly called.
Shen Yuxi nodded , with a serious look in her eyes, not like she was joking at all.
I quickly organized my words in my mind and said to him, "This free book giveaway is just a stepping stone for the merchants to promote their health products. They use free books to attract the attention of the elderly and obtain their contact information and family background so as to sell health products in the next step. Strictly speaking, this is a scam."
Even though I gave the answer, my cheeks still heated up involuntarily. And Shen Yuxi, who was standing opposite me and was originally as cold as ice, suddenly curved the corners of her lips, as if to affirm me.
He then asked, "Do you think this news tip is worth a special report?"
"I think one message is enough." As soon as the words fell, Han Shao beside Shen Yuxi showed an ambiguous smile, and the others also looked at him with a little embarrassment.
The atmosphere in the conference room suddenly became noisy. I didn't know what they were whispering, but I just felt like I seemed to have said something wrong just now.
Afterwards, Editor-in-Chief Sister Lin signaled me to leave the meeting room first. When I returned to the tea room, my cell phone suddenly rang.
"Xiaonan, where are you? Why don't you come home yet?" Dad's slightly anxious voice came from the other end of the phone.
I whispered back, "Dad, I'm still at the newspaper office. I haven't gotten off work yet. I probably won't be home until after 10 o'clock."
"Are you kidding me? Why do I have to work overtime on my first day at work?"
"Okay, Dad, I'll report after my master finishes the meeting and will be back soon. Don't worry," I comforted him.
"Hey, kid, can't you report tomorrow? Be careful on the road..." In order to stop my father from nagging me, I quickly hung up the phone.
"The little girl who guards the gate every day can't be a reporter."
Hearing this, I turned around and was about to refute, but when I looked up, I was met with a pair of amber pupils, slightly furrowed brows, thin lips slightly pursed, and there was not much expression on his face.
"Master, good evening!" I said as my anger turned into joy and I bowed to Shen Yuxi.
"Don't rush to recognize me as your master." He took a sip of coffee and said calmly, "Based on your performance today, I don't think you are suitable to be my apprentice."
"Senior, I don't quite understand."
We didn't even talk to each other today, how could they conclude that I was not suitable? Was it because I didn't answer well at the meeting? But I didn't have time to prepare.
"Just now in the meeting, regarding the free book giveaway, what do you think is the basis for just sending a message?" Shen Yuxi paused and then asked the question.
"Such incidents have been common in recent years. Through the publicity in previous years, citizens are more or less aware of it. This free book giveaway is just a change of name and does not have much news value. So I think it is enough to expose this sales method to the public." I answered confidently.
"First, since the public already has some understanding about it, and the medicine remains the same, why are there still so many participants in this event? Second, there have been several cases of elderly people being poisoned after taking the health products. You have ignored these two points. Have you ever thought about why elderly people would be poisoned after taking them if they are qualified health products?" Shen Yuxi asked in a serious tone.
When he asked me this, I suddenly felt that my previous conclusion was too self-evident, and I couldn't help but feel guilty: "Is it a fake medicine?"
"This is what we need to investigate next." Shen Yuxi glanced at her watch and continued, "Don't wear skirts or high heels to work in the future. Remember, you are a reporter. If you can't even do these things, then you don't have to come tomorrow."
I moved my sore feet. The seven-inch high heels looked a little ironic. My face was burning, and I felt ashamed. I wanted to explain.
"That's all for today. Go home early."
His angry tone suddenly softened a bit. This man is really moody.
I paused and asked, "Can you tell me how you knew I was paying attention to this?"
"Do you remember what you were doing when I came back this afternoon?" After saying this, Shen Yuxi left the tea room.
I thought back and it seemed like I was reading the news online at the time. So that's it.
